Tristram Shandy Cliffs Notes
>> How to Ride a Hobby Horse
At the end of Volume 6 of this work Mr Shandy as the teller of his own life story provides a drawing of his narrative line over the previous volumes Each one is twisted beyond all recognition of course since he has been doubling back digressing and indeed doing pretty much everything except getting a move on He promises faithfully that in Volume 7 his narrative will resemble nothing but the very straightest of lines he s reached the hour of his own birth in six books and will proceed from that moment in strict chronology utterly without interruption At the beginning of the next volume however he suddenly tells us that the Devil is after him and races off to France in an attempt to outrun the old fox he doesn t get back to his own story until Volume 8

This gives you an idea of what you re in for The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy consists primarily of the author s attempt to not tell a story indeed it s about practically everything in the world except its ostensible subject While the narrator s interruptions and digressions are generally funny in themselves there s an additional level of humor in the lengths to which he goes to get in his own way It s a great read but it makes things rather difficult when it comes to telling the story itself

There s a plotline of sorts to be sure which has to do with the night of Tristram s birth and what a complicated project that turns out to be In addition to that Tristram amuses himself with chapters on the nature of obsessions or hobby horses as he calls them chapters on how to argue with your wife chapters on sermon making chapters on chapters and even a chapter on digressions This last by the way consists primarily of Tristram insisting that he does not have time to talk about digressions and will do it later and when he comes to the end of the chapter immediately realizes that he has just written his chapter on digressions Yes it s a digression from the chapter on digressions that itself comprises the chapter on digressions Whew

Now this whole business begins with Tristram complaining that his parents should have paid more attention to what they were doing at the moment he was conceived it seems that his mother interrupted the marital act that night by suddenly asking her husband if he had remembered to wind up the clock You can see from this initial interruption that Tristram Shandy bears a pretty consistent tone throughout including the famous bit where Uncle Toby begins a sentence in Volume 1 Chapter 21 and doesn t get around to completing it until several chapters into Volume 2 Chapter 6 a gap of about 25 pages One might be tempted to think of this novel as just a nutty diversion from more serious matters

This isn t entirely true Structurally this thing looks like a Godawful mess but then again Sterne lived at a time when the structure of the English novel was still under construction More importantly although the content of the novel veers all over everything the thematic elements don t What you get here is commentary from a variety of angles on the pernicious effects of taking yourself too seriously Tristram s father for instance an intelligent man has retreated into the country for uninterrupted study and thus come up with some of the screwiest notions in literature He thinks for instance that a man s destiny is governed to an enormous extent by the size of his nose and by his first name of which the name Tristram is by far the most destructive So you can imagine how upset he gets when a faulty set of forceps flattens his baby son s nose at the very moment of birth and when an incompetent cleric christens the boy by that horrid name a few minutes later

All unbelievably ridiculous of course made more so by the careful studious and above all lengthy manner of telling Tristram quotes all manner of ancient and contemporary scholars on these subjects as indeed on all subjects Thus we come to understand that this kind of pedantry even on the most critical topic makes fools of us all

That is to say what makes all these interruptions and diversions so hysterical is that the narrator actually thinks they re all necessary he has his reasons for each and every one He s not just a madman on the contrary he s so intent on demonstrating what he means that all he comes up with is nonsense

Of course no one should require 450 pages to communicate a point like that so Sterne was careful to make all his sub stories as entertaining as possible He succeeded beautifully too Tristram Shandy was a huge popular success so much so that those who disliked it had to publish their disdain in the daily papers Which is fine except that many of them objected to the undeniably bawdy subject matter declaring that literature ought to have a moral purpose behind it and decrying the vulgarity of popular taste Sterne couldn t have come up with a better piece of nonsense if he d tried here were some of the generation s brightest minds getting as finicky about a harmless amusement as the biggest fools in the novel itself about their various hobby horses The author might as well have jumped up and yelled Gotcha

You might take that as a warning If you read this thing resisting its diversions from what you might consider good sense or taste it will trip you up on every page So just enjoy the ride

Benshlomo says What
>> Easier and cheaper than the bookstores
This was an easy way to buy my daughter s books for college We will do it this way from now on
>> Great performance
Anton Lessor gives a performance worthy of this classic I am writing a paper on Tristram Shandy for school and thought hey what the heck I ll listen to it in my car Walter Shandy and Uncle Toby are characters that rank with Don Quixote and Sancho Panza The phrasing and nuance that Lessor gives to Shandy actually provides more humour than you might find on your own Your get the benefit of someone who has read the material several times and knows where all the jokes are so you can benefit the first time around Thoroughly professional preparation is demonstrated by Lessor When Sterne writes or just what is a voice actor supposed to do Somehow Lessor makes a great decision almost every time That is what I mean when I say it is funnier than reading it on your own Uncle Toby and Walter talking about the right end of a woman is priceless
By the way the service from England by mail is pretty good so save some money and buy it from one of the third party vendors Enjoy

McGraw Hill s SAT Subject Test Chemistry 2ed
>> Full of ERRORS and not the most helpful
After going through the majority of the book I knew that it was not the best book There were many errors and misleading information I bought it because of the good reviews on the Amazon but I soon realized that many of them were just used to bring up the ratings I would not recommend this book If you are actually serious of the SAT chem do not buy McGraw s book
>> It s a fluff book
I bought this book solely based on the 11 five star versus 3 low star reviews However it was misleading Don t know where those 11 five star reviews came from This book is mostly fluff with very little valuable stuff Of course you may buy it if you target only 500 600 If you want a decent score >700 I recommend other books such as Barron Princeton review and Kaplan I bought them from Amazon In a word this book is superficial Don t be fooled by those good reviews
>> Easier than the real thing but provides alot of practice questions
I bought this book not for the review sections but for the 5 practice tests I think practice is the most important thing if you want to score well on any exam I found I scored better on these tests than those in Kaplan s book I was not surprised when I sat for the real thing and found it harder than this book

If you don t plan on investing a lot of your time into preparing for SAT Chem and you re looking for a book that closely models the real thing get the official Collegeboard instead although it only has 1 practice test and no review I did it only once and because of the mistakes I made managed not to repeat them when I sat for the real test and there were quite a few opportunities to repeat them

However if like me you plan on investing a lot of time into preparing get this book The number of tests despite their low difficulty level will allow you to practice doing the questions quickly and revise basic concepts

You should have a reference maybe a textbook from your course or even google by your side though It ll greatly help in clarifying important concepts AND providing the information that needs to be memorized YES some of the information needs to be memorized Meaning you cannot derive them just from knowing basic concepts

I got an 800 for the test

Hope this helps

>> quick review
I already took the test 0041 and failed by 8 points I discovered that it wasn t necesarily the content of the english content knowledge praxis 2 It was that fact that I ran out of time before I finished so I basically guessed for the next 15 questions My advice is work fast Praxis study guides are scams however the tests are good so you can get a feel for the speed 120 mins flys when you re having fun panicking to get it done Good luck
>> A must for Praxis test takers
Previously I only used the ETS study guide and failed my Praxis II test The Cliffs Test Prep gave a wider overview of what is really on the test The vocabulary and topics to study were explained in detail and easy to understand I would say that this book is a must have for test takers
>> Disjointed introduction to test taking with some content
I just received my copy of this book I ordered it to prepare for the Praxis II 0041 and 0042 Think of this as a treatise on test taking rather than a source of information specific to any of the tests Rather than a book containing sections dedicated to each test this is a collection of bits of advice on test taking with lists of on which test the form can be found The tone and majority of the content should come across as condescending to anyone of normal intelligence who has successfully finished college If you need help constructing a coherent essay in response to a prompt you ll need more than a book to help you prepare for this test Inside you ll find such advice as Read all the answer choices and Use the process of elimination
Unfortunately I didn t need to spend any money for such information In an attempt to give an overview of each of the Language Arts tests the content for any one of them has been stripped down to the barest level of helpfulness Raid your library for an overview of grammar and literary vocabulary and use the Sparknotes to review the content of the literature suggested on the ETS website

Julius Caesar Barron s Book Notes
>> Confusing page numbers
This edition of the text has very confusing page numbers Rather than separating the sections by scenes and acts the book numbers at the top 2 3 45 or 1 1 115 It makes it more difficult in a way to find specific scenes because they run together on the page rather than appear with a break between the scenes However the Arden edition has very nice notes that help with difficult passages or references
>> Not what I expected
This series is great for students The books are divided into three sections the first section is a kind of history of Shakespeare and his plays the second section is the actual play and the third section is more of the details of the play i e where the story came from how it is performed how to directed the play All in all it was a great for teaching the works of Shakespeare
>> A classic
One of the classics we all had to read it in high school but it s remarkably easier to get through than it was when I was 16

>> A book that withstands the test of time
I would have liked to have met Jane Austen and I think she would find it entertaining that her books have lasted as long as they did

I won t review the book itself but rather the Kindle version of it The book was free amazing and works splendidly across my non Kindle devices my iPod touch and my Blackberry That way I can sneak 10 15 mins worth of reading in on the train or bus without worrying about people making judgements about a man reading Austen

The test of a classic novel is whether or not you want to keep it handy and refer to it when you need inspiration a solid read or just to get lost in a different world Thanks to the Kindle edition of Pride and Prejudice I can pretend I m in the world of Mr Darcy

>> adapted for children its a clasic appropriate for children
Appropriate for children this book has excitement history and christian thinking in the ways of social behavior Safe for reading I think a parent should read it first to clear it for their children but it can be a good novel for children to read Pride and Prejudice Penguin Classics
>> love love love this book
This classic really stands the test of time I ve wanted to read this book for years but just never wanted to dive into history and it s strange language I m soo glad I did I loved it The Barnes and Noble Classic version is great because it gives you little footnotes on historical terms and phrasing It was a wonderful read that I couldn t put down I would definitely recommend it to even occasional readers like me

Treasure Island Regents Illustrated Classics Level C for sale

Treasure Island Regents Illustrated Classics Level C
>> Treasure Island is a tale of high adventure on the seven seas with Jim Hawkins and the evil Long John Silver
Back in the days when young men and women read adventure tales there was none better in the adolescent genre that the imimitable Robert Louis Stevenson 1850 94 Stevenson was a Scottish Presbyterian who was trained in law but forsook it for the sake of fiction Among his classics are The Black Arrow Kidnapped and his great novella
Dr Jekyll and Mister Hyde Stevenson was a sufferer of TB and died at the too young age of 44
Treasure Island was published in 1883 It began as a story Stevenson narrated to his wife s son Lloyd Osborne
It tells the thrilling tale of buried treasure on Treasure Island The island is fictional but Stevenson seems to have located it near the California coast He lived in California for a time Jim Hawkins is the teenage narrator When the old seadog Billy Bones comes to the Admiral Benbow Inn he carries with him a map of Treasure Island Bones had been a sailor on a sea expedition led by the pirate Captain Flnt he had just received a black spot sign of death from the blind sailor Pew
Hawkins joins forces with Squire Trelawney Dr Livesey and later Captain Smollett aboard the Hispanolia in search of the buried treasure On the ship there are 19 mutineers led by the one legged Long John Silver and his famous parrot Captain Flint After a series of adventures and much violence the treasure of 700 000 pounds is discovered and Hawkins returns home a rich young lad
Stevenson is good in melodramatic action and in characterization influenced by his mentor Sir Walter Scott Clearly drawn characters such as Silver Ben Gunn and the evil Israel Hands are colorfully drawn The author is adept at word painting excelling in lush descriptive passages of the sea journey and Treasure Island He has borrowed the parrot from Defoe s Robinson Crusoe Stevenson s Treasure Island featuring young Jim Hawkins is not a deep work but is purely and simply an adventure tale to be read and reread as long as the art of writing and the practice of reading are part of civilized life

>> Good classic novel
This was my first time around with Treasure Island and I must say it was a well written novel with plenty of action plot suspense and thrill Long John Silver was a well developed character and really defines the moral struggles of mankind The outright greed at first and then the ultimate fate he was to endure at the end of the story no spoilers was written in a way that I could identify with Jim was such a strong and courageous character that doesn t seem to avoid confrontation that he keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire book A few times during the thick of the plot I actually gasped aloud thinking it may be the end Altogether this was a very good and easy read I would recommend it to anyone looking for a classic sea/pirate/adventure novel and with the lack of foul language it is deemed appropriate for all ages
>> Pure adventure
Treasure Island is a story of pure adventure The pirate Long John Silver is the star character treacerous yet likable despite some seriously confusing pirate dialogue Heavy use of sailing lingo and the fictional style and language of the novel sometimes hindered my immersion while reading Despite these complaints the story s quick pace sense of adventure and characterization of John Silver made it a joy to read
