Fast Shipping 100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum Choosing the Right Educational Philosophy for Your Child s Learning Style

100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum Choosing the Right Educational Philosophy for Your Child s Learning Style
>> Helpful with a Few Caveats
I did find it quite helpful in choosing curriculum to match the learning styles of children and teaching style of adults I would recommend it but caution that she has no problem interjecting her opinion She is a conservative Christian and anti unschooling It grates a little on my non religious nerves as she writes sentences such as God created each one as an individual with particular gifts abilities and interests or Because God is real we believe He has revealed truth to us in a way that seems to assume that everyone will/should agree with her So more liberal Christians/those who have no problem with evolution humanists agnostics and atheists and possibly those of other religions may find her completely inaccurate descriptions of evolution or insertion of her personal theology annoying while unschoolers may not appreciate her occasional denigration of the method I ve read books coming from a Christian worldview as the product description states but have not seen one pushing such a fundamentalist perspective coming from a secular publishing company before Because it is from a secular publishing company I do agree with other reviewers that it should be called 100 Top Picks for Christian Homeschool Curriculum

This is my only complaint Just thought I d throw that out there I know there are many conservative Christian homeschoolers and that they make up most of the homeschooling market However those who do not fit the mold may not find this book quite as wonderful or helpful
>> Must read for homeschoolers even if curriculum is not an issue
After reading about 12 books on homeschooling and homeschool curriculum this was the FINAL and best book I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK EVEN IF YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT CURRICULUM YOU WANT TO USE This book saved me from going completely insane After deciding to homeschool I immediately began to look at curriculum this has taken about 9 months Before reading throw out what all of your friends have told you that you need to use
This book helped me evaluate exactly what I wanted to accomplish in my schooling After determining this Duffy helps you to determine what style is best for what you want to accomplish For example what was best for me was unit studies Based on the questions you answer and the points assigned you will have a ranking for each style of teaching You evalute what type of learner you are She gives non meaningful names to the different types but it is easy to pick yourself from a list of traits For example I was a Wiggly Willy You then evaluate what type of learner your child is/children are I have a Wiggly Willy and Competent Carl these are gender neutral names By evaluating this you are able to determine which curriculum will work best for your child or children
She then has a chart of the different curriculums divided by subject and areas She gives a number ranking in several different categories for each curriculum Basically I had to look at my child s learning style and see which had 5 s or 4 s It also tells if the curriculm has Christian teaches Catholic Protestant etc or if there is no Christian teaching The other things she ranks independent study or one on one amount of writing involved for student prep time grade specific or multilevel ease of use for teacher if the teacher s manual is really needed or not useful if it supports Charlotte Mason philosophy or classical
Lastly she gives her review of each of the 100 curriculums so you can actually read more about which curriculum you have decided is best for you She even tells you what you really need and don t need plus the average price This may sound a little complicated but it is not at all It is very easy and laid out nice and organized for us novice homeschoolers I wish I had started with this book first
The only not so great thing I found about this book is it did not help me evalute pre school programs for my almost 4 year old So if you are only looking for pre school info don t even bother with this one Otherwise it was fantastic
>> Must have for 1st timers
This book is very valuable I am homeschooling for the 1st time and was simply overwhelmed by the many many choices of curicula I ordered this book and it took about 3 months to work through it It is not only a top pick book but also a workbook for figuring out your own teaching style and your child s learning style I went to my first convention already knowing what I was looking for and would have been lost had I not read this book first I recommend it highly

There s Money Where Your Mouth Is An Insider s Guide to a Career in Voice overs
>> Good information but partially obsolete
I liked this book and the author s easy going narrative Elaine Clark is clearly talented and well respected in the voice over field That being said the book clearly needs an update When I bought the Second Edition I thought I would be getting more up to date info This may be partially my fault as I guess I did not scrutinize the publishing date before I clicked the Buy button There is half a chapter on casette duplication and cassette artwork The section detailing salary expectations is also 8 10 years behind We don t want to work that cheap If there isn t a more recent update then certain infomation should be completely omitted from the book Reading the above mentioned sections and some others made me wonder what other antiquated advice I may take to heart and then make a mistake as a direct result If you can buy this book at a discount and keep the above caveats in mind there is much useful information for your tool belt
>> Tough Great Read Which Needs Revision
I enjoyed this book very much Its best features are that it breaks down the types of work and gives many chances to practice sample reads followed or preceded by an analysis of the motivation problem tone audience age behind the copy The only thing that hampers this book from being a a great work today is that it was published 9 years ago looks like it was initially written in 1995 and does not appear to ever be updated As an example the sections dealing with DAT demo box design have little application and some of the practice exercises refer to either products or character exchanges which seem a bit dated today Some information might wish to be compared with more recently authored work No one needs insight about Wang Computers in the age of the Mac One can only hope this work is quickly updated It used to be one of the bibles to many It should be that way again Perhaps the print size might be increased as well
>> An All In One Guide
OK as a disclaimer I must say I have studied with Elaine for 2 years at her studio in San Francisco and I have worked on voice jobs for her as well However I bought this book prior to discovering her voice over school and I was blown away by the depth of information included in it When I found out I could study directly from Elaine I jumped at the chance and I have not been disappointed

The number one thing that most new voice over students don t understand is that a good voice is not the most important thing in voice acting It is the acting In this book you learn how to apply Elaine s methods for bringing emotion and honesty into any kind of read Whether you are selling cleaning products on TV narrating a corporate report or providing the voice for a wacky robot toy you must be grounded in reality This book will show you tips and techniques to achieve the level of real that is desired by agents directors and clients

There is a huge diversity of voice jobs out there and Elaine covers them all Television promos commercials narration audio books radio plays toys animation etc all are given specific information and hands on techniques While I must say that nothing can equal the work a student does in one on one sessions where you get immediate feedback this book goes a long way to providing you with a springboard for study If you read and apply the lessons by practicing recording and critiquing you can get ahead of anyone who thinks they can go it alone on natural talent Voice over is a landscape of techniques and this book is the Atlas of that sometimes strange land

>> Gain an edge in college choice s
This short guide book is filled with useful tips on subjects that might otherwise be overlooked by many college applicants It also provides examples of essay formats that should be very helpful I recommend it for any high school applicant especially those with their sights on a particular institution
>> Don t Apply Without Reading This Book
Our son is currently engaged in his college hunt He s a fairly well qualified high school junior top 10 of his class varsity sports Eagle Scout outside job etc We thought this college thing would be a fairly easy process WRONG

We are so thankful to have discovered this book Dr Hernandez does a superb job of explaining the entire process of applying to a highly selective college or university She provides a behind the scenes look at how a college application is screened while providing many practical and insightful recommendations on completing the process Had we not discovered this book I can assure you our son would have made some egregious errors when completing his applications

To date we ve visited Cornell Duke Wake Forest and UNC Chapel Hill Each of the college admissions lectures we received at these institutions validated the information in this book It was as though Dr Hernandez was prescient If you ve not already done so I cannot encourage you enough to VISIT COLLEGES Listen to their admissions presentations Take their tours Talk to their students You ll learn a great deal that s not addressed in the U S News World Report and Princeton Review college selection guides And it s FUN

Run don t walk to purchase this publication It s a quick read Have a highlighter handy

I also highly recommend The Early Admissions Game by Christopher Avery It s imperative you understand the effect of Early Decision on the college acceptance process

Good luck during your college hunt

Barron s AP Chinese Language and Culture with Audio CDs Barron s the Leader in Test Preparation
>> A powerful set of review and practice tests for the AP test
Any preparing for the AP Chinese Language and Culture test needs BARRON S AP CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE a powerful set of review and practice tests for the AP test Questions in both traditional and simplified Chinese characters are just like the actual exam offering two full length practice exams with answers plus audio CDs of spoken material

>> The best for AP Chinese Exam on Amazon com
This book does contain a comprehensive review The practice exams with answer keys and answer explanations are great It is a good tool for anyone preparing for the AP Chinese Exam

I have noticed some sentences can be improved with better wording otherwise they are only suitable for school students or learners

This book occasionally doesn t help readers use correct punctuation though actually most Chinese also don t know how to use Chinese punctuation correctly

It seems like there are a few phrases in traditional Chinese are directly translated from simplified Chinese Though these phrases are understandable by Chinese but it would be better if they were improved with better wording

Just as the book states the curriculum and assessment framework for the AP Chinese Language and Culture undergoes continuous improvement so I can t be too fussy about this book This book is by far the best for AP Chinese Exam on Amazon com

Heart of Darkness Norton Critical Editions
>> What are we and who will we become in a foreign place
Somehow it seems to be a presumptous undertaking to write a review of such a monumental work The narrative is short The writer Marlow is sent to the inner Congo to find a Mr Kurtz a legendary hunter of ivory and to bring him back or take up his position
The atmosphere grows increasingly oppressive from the start in Belgium where something seems to have been left unsaid to the long trip up the Congo through places of heartbreaking emptiness emptiness of the soul
Finally the meeting with the famed Kurtz which does not really bring spiritual relief because Kurtz now is neither the expected demon nor the misunderstood philanthropist He simply is a broken man And his notes read by Marlow highlight the ambiguity of his and our characters And that is why Marlow cannot get over this experience He knows that deep within himself there is also a Kurtz lurking
>> Amazing
The text of the story itself is truly fantastic deeply psychological and probing The Norton edition is great because it has some fantastic context essays and other sources that really frame Conrad s work nicely This is well worth it
>> A study of man
It is well written The idea of a storyteller in the story is not unique but very effective We could ponder over the word darkness for quite some time The best way to ponder is with Cliff s Notes Personally I wanted him to get on with it I guess I was a little impatient for the action and the conclusion If it hadn t been for cliff notes I would have missed haft the things he was implying

A merchant company is missing an agent Kurtz and Marlowe must find him Traveling though harsher environments than he imagined possible he may have found what he was seeking As with many of this type of epic the physical distance or direction is not as important then the transformation it plays on ones soul

I missed this book somehow in school The reason I started to read this book before actually I actually became immersed in it was to see how close it came to the movie No not the movie you are thinking of Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death 1988 The film was shot primarily in the avocado groves maintained by the University of California at Riverside UCR which the university uses for horticultural experiments Adrienne Barbeau is Dr Kurtz
The horror the horror
