I bought this book for more LG practice especially after reading how pointless the setup book is
I would like to say that I never purchased the Set up book so I can t attest to its worth This workbook however is great it is just more drills and games It is necessary to first work through the logic games bible however in order to understand the explanations and general comments The first half are drills then there are 10 individual games then 5 real LSAT sections totaling 20 games for a grand total of 30 games It is a must if you need additional help with the LG section and can benefit from seeing their setup and full explanation

First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind

This is old fashioned grammar with common sense It is easy enough for slow learners with enrichment activities for those who need it This one book covers two years including teacher instruction Excellent for the money Hard to find a grammar book for this age that doesn t also have penmanship and spelling These lessons teach a multitude of non grammar info such as learning your address family names memorization summarizing and even analyzing more than just written works All of this is age appropriate My 6 year old can summarize a story better than most public schooled children his age I am sure He knows his family s names and relations better than before it s big and complicated and he can analyze as well He has already memorized two poems and is working on the third Excellent teaching book

I have been using this book since the beginning of the school year We are now at lesson 50 I have to say I love it The lessons are short but to the point My daughter is in first grade and it is just the right level for her And her 4 year old sister can listen and memorize the poems because they are short It works really well for our family

I am always curious about negative reviews So I read them for this book One reviewer mentioned that the author adapted many of the poems Honestly I suspected that when we learned the Monday s Child poem But I was thankful that it was adapted The poem that I remember had several negative things And my son was born on Wednesday Ugh In the original poem he would be full of woe I think the version in this book is one I much prefer I noticed that other language in that poem is also updated I think that s okay Happy and Cheerful is a lot easier for a first grader to understand than bonny and blithe I am comfortable with those modifications

Another interesting thing that people also commented about not liking the directions for what the parent is to say I remember one school that I subbed for that used Saxon Phonics It drove me crazy at the time It was written out exactly what I needed to say and it seemed a bit extreme to me first graders were diagramming sentences and words and it seemed to me that you had to cover every question they had written down exactly a they had written It truly was a script that needed to be followed But not all teaching materials with directions for parents are like that I don t think this book is I do follow it most of the time but I modify the questions when I need to for my children For teaching reading I use How to teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons and love that book Now I am so familiar with that book though that I say very little of the script We go over the sounds and words and story and questions But I still appreciate the script if I need it as a reference I have realized that scripted lessons are not loved by everyone we all find what method of teaching works best for us and for our kids

I would recommend this book highly I am a certified teacher and as I started using this book I really saw the logic of how the lessons are organized The lessons are varied periodically there is a story or picture with questions about it I think it is very important for children to understand grammar and so often it seems to be overlooked in our country I know that when I was student teaching 10 years ago we never touched it in first grade or third or fifth

I have a really difficult time getting excited about this program Trust me I tried It came highly recommended by a few other homeschooling families I know
The essence of the lessons are having the child memorize the definitions of the parts of speech Sometimes the child makes a list of example words Sometimes the child writes a letter memorizes a poem or talks about a picture in the book But essentially the child is solely memorizing the definitions
Rarely is the teacher prompted to ask an open ended question of the student Most of the questions in the scripts tell you to prompt the child until they get the answer right
Language has structure and helping a child discover the structure and use it to express her or himself is what I am looking for in a grammar program I don t like the idea of having my children be able to parrot back to me what the definition of a noun is but really have no idea how to find one or use one
Other posters have noted that many of the poems has been altered I concur and I find that unacceptable
I also disagree strongly with the definitions A person place thing or idea is not a noun The word that names the person place thing or idea is a noun It is a subtle distinction but an important one With all the talk about logic in A Well Trained Mind I assumed that Ms Wise would have understood that
I would recommend this curriculum if you need something that is inexpensive Beyond that I can t recommend it

I ve been homeschooling my child for over a year now for a variety of reasons I saw this book at our library and decided to check it out I wanted to compare my first year to other homeschoolers just out of curiousity

The first few chapters discuss reasons to homeschool and preparing yourself and your family for the changes that will take place as a result While the stories of the families were interesting I had trouble relating to the families with multiple children since I am the mother of an only child Many of the parents discuss juggling different ages and grade levels

The rest of the book tackled the issues and obstacles that are most common among first year homeschoolers such as that annoying question what about socialization The author also offers advice on how to avoid being overly defensive and just take setbacks in a stride

Throughout the book there are highlighted boxes with What I Wish Someone Had Told Me During My First Year of Homeschooling from homeschoolers using a variety of teaching styles I thought the explanations of unschooling was the most informative While a lot of the comments were similar to those you would find on message boards it was still a nice touch to the book

There were lots of other useful books mentioned so I added them to my future reading list

I found this book to be FULL of insightful and encouraging stories that made my desire to homeschool my two young children increase Although my children are still very young 2 years and 6 months I am even more encouraged that homeschooling is the way to go for them especially after reading this book

I just got my REG score and I passed with a respectable margin on my first try This book was instrumental It covers all of the major topics concisely The questions cover the obscure and common details you will probably be asked about About the only criticism I have is that the sims were not demanding enough to drill the material into you While the book was more than enough to easily pass I left the exam feeling less than confident The Wiley 2010 REG sims weren t realistic enough to really stress you out on what to expect when dealing with various interrelated situations This was the source of my confidence issue when leaving the exam site Fortunately my worry was unnecessary

>> Well I m not sure if it helped but it gave me an idea of what to expect
I started reading and using this book roughly two months prior to taking the AFOQT I would definitely say it helped prepare me to some degree at least the tips The tips are mainly that you should expect to do the test quickly if you don t know a question move on and don t worry about it until later Also it gives you a reasonably good idea of what kinds of questions to expect

If you ve never taken an officer candidate exam you really won t be able to fully prepare However I do still feel that the vocabulary section helped me I actually did the tests quite a few times and realized there were indeed some words which I didn t know the meaning to and many of those appeared on the test

Don t beat yourself up if you don t feel proficient at the pretests in the book the actual test was easier than the pre tests The thing that the book preaches mainly is think quickly answer the question move on

If you aren t sharp on your math skills or vocabulary you should take at least an AP math in high school or college math and begin to read some books This will help sharpen your math and verbal skills Of course you can t become an officer without a degree so what is the point in taking the test if you aren t planning on finishing a degree

I won t lie when you take the test your head will feel like its on fire So get some sleep before you take the test and do your normal routine if you normally skip breakfast then skip breakfast The book will tell you all of this but in more words and more detail

Overall the book helps ease your nerves about the test but it won t prepare you entirely So practice the pre tests read the sections applicable to your branch and follow the directions and you should do reasonably well

If you re curious how I scored I scored well enough to be a pilot navigator and basically any other job So did it work That s anybody s guess but the vocab section did help a bit

My daughter is a graduating senior high school student I purchased this book for her Within a couple days this book was full of color coded flags marking the type of scholarship and due date She was able to find over 30 scholarships consistent with her intended field of study that she was unable to find using web government and school resources She is in process of applying to all of them If your high school student has prepared well for college and is motivated to seek out scholarships this is an excellent resource Perhaps the best endorsement I can give is that I have had very little time with the book my daughter has read it cover to cover is actively submitting scholarship applications

I started the scholarship process after I had gotten into NYU Early Decision and realized that downside of getting into a top ranked private university is that you have to come up with the money to pay for it This epiphany led me to begin the scholarship search The first scholarship I applied for took me over 50 hours and 3 weeks to complete

At first the scholarship application process seemed pretty impossible I had to write an essay but I had writer s block I had to get two letters of recommendation but I had no idea who to ask I had to submit a FAFSA I hadn t even filled one out I needed to send in my final transcript but I had stopped going to AP Spanish as much after I got my early decision acceptance I did however really want to make some money and I do mean make Well I applied to about 30 Scholarships I won two The two I won covered over half my NYU Tuition

Apply widely Don t be afraid of applying for the interest in scholarships Be generous Applying for a scholarship that wants you to show an interest in nursing does NOT mean that you must become a nurse if you win that scholarship After all no one can force you to become a nurse However if you have any interest in the field do you like bio you may be qualified for the scholarship Showing an interest in the field even as little as a 1 interest can qualify you for the scholarship Ever like bio Remember You Have Nothing to Fear But Fear Itself You have nothing to lose by applying

The money is out there You might as well try to take it After all if you don t apply for these college scholarships someone else will
