AP Biology Flash Cards
>> Good review tool
If you ve ever taken an AP class before you know the crazy periods of studying that occur right before the exam Prep books class notes textbooks heavy oh god the whole lot Carried around everywhere
This box set of flashcards is a very nice addition to study materials for the exam I would recommend this set to anyone who is reviewing for the exam but I did not find that is was useful for learning and last minute facts
Here s a rundown Inside the box are 500 flashcards Each has a small hole in it so you can slide a set on the included ring The ring is NOT big enough to hold all 500 but you can easily put a whole larger topic or a few smaller ones onto it at one time
The flashcards are not vocab flashcards with one word on each side The front has a concept and the back has a couple of bullets of information A couple even have diagrams like the parts of the cell or a drawing of a dicot stem verses a monocot stem You have to quint to see where a few of the arrows point but it s not too bad
As I saw it the box set did a pretty decent job of covering all the major areas of biology It even included a couple of cards on the labs that might be tested
One thing to keep in mind is that these cards are really useful only if you already know the material If you find that you don t understand a topic very well and are looking to review materials to help you get that extra bit of information to put all the pieces together then these flashcards will not help The information is brief and devoid of in depth explanation like some of the study books have If you need more of a mini lesson then I would suggest getting a real prep book Barrons makes very thorough ones but there are other types available
In short the flashcards are a good tool to help in preperation for the AP exam but you definitely need to allow some time to work through all 500
>> bio cards are great
My step son got them for Christmas and he loves them They have helped him out alot
>> One of the Two Top Flash Card Products for AP Biology
I agree with another reviewer that this is one of the top two flash card products for AP Biology the other being AP Biology Flashcard Quicklet Flashcards in a Book for Biology Students I have used both and here is my review
1 This Product This is very good if you like loose cards The order of the topics covered is rather random Some cards are very brief that is may be for brevity You have lot of space on the cards to write There are enough number of cards You should have already prepared from a Study Guide before trying these cards
2 AP Biology Flashcard Quicklet Flashcards in a Book for Biology Students This is very good if you like flash cards in a book The answers to the questions are very comprehensive and self contained The topics and cards are presented in a logical order It s an excellent tool for a quick review if you have already prepared from a Study Guide Because the cards are self contained you can use this book with any study guide or without any atudy guide

Kaplan GMAT Math Workbook
>> Valuable GMAT math refresher especially good for people with rusty math skills
I self studied and scored a 770 on the GMAT Here are my thoughts on the Kaplan GMAT Math Workbook
OVERVIEW
The Kaplan GMAT Math Workbook deals exclusively with the quantitative section of the GMAT Even though the math tested in the GMAT is quite basic even elementary math subjects will seem like rocket science if you ve been out of school for a long time which is why a good math review is always welcome And here is where this book comes in The Kaplan Math Workbook is both a general math refresher with specific exercises for each topic and a GMAT practice problem resource a combination which means that this book is definitely worth some attention if you re struggling with quant
The book offers a wide range of practice problems presented in both drill format and GMAT format What you ll find in the Kaplan Math Workbook
Arithmetic 87 drills and 116 Problem Solving
Algebra 35 drills and 41 Problem Solving
Geometry 66 drills and 90 Problem Solving
Word Problems 10 drills and 103 Problem Solving
50 Data Sufficiency
PROS
Solid math review with well written content that will take you through most of the things you need to know in order to tackle the quantitative section of the GMAT I d say this book is particularly useful if math has not been a part of your life for some time It s good as an introduction as well as a supplement for intermediate study
With over 600 problems and exercises the book is well worth the money if you re looking for practice
Explanations for GMAT practice problems are detailed enough to make anybody understand the why and the how I particularly liked the fact that some problems are dealt with in more than one way The book generously providing several methods of solving a given question
Each chapter s practice sets are divided according to difficulty so you can focus on whichever level suits you best if you re pressed for time
Backsolving and number picking are discussed but only for a few pages which is a plus because in my opinion good test prep books should focus on a thorough concept review instead of tricks
CONS
Not enough Data Sufficiency This GMAT math question type is not presented as well as it could have been and there is a disproportionately small number of practice problems for the format Since most people see this type of question for the first time while getting ready for the GMAT I do believe it deserves more attention
Some GMAT math concepts are not given sufficient attention and unfortunately it s the topics that you re likely to see if you re aiming for a high quant score Statistics and probabilities are reviewed in just two pages while there is no separate section for permutations and combinations
The answers to drills are not detailed since the book only gives you the right answer While most drills are there just to enforce concepts and thus are pretty basic the fact that almost half of the practice problems in the book are not explained as well as they could have been is definitely a minus
As with other Kaplan material this book could have been edited a bit more carefully You will see a few errors here and there but this does not have a dramatic impact on the quality of the book
BOTTOM LINE
If quant is your weak area the Kaplan GMAT Math Workbook could be a valuable tool in your prep provided you take the time to properly review all the information it contains and carefully work through the hundreds of problems The book is useful for all levels of math knowledge but you will probably see the highest return on invested time if your math skills are basic or intermediate While there s no shortage of advanced problems the workbook does not specifically target high scoring test takers as evidenced by the fact that topics perceived by most as difficult are not adequately addressed
About me Dana Jinaru 770 GMAT scorer expert at Beat The GMAT a community serving 100K GMAT students/month
>> Maybe too optimistic but nothing helps as much as basics
I got 99th percentile on my GMAT 750 49 42 and i used 3 books this one Kaplan s book with CD and Verbal Workbook I had access to PR book and PP but I did only tests from those I found Kaplan s materials of quality and difficulty Some whine that Kaplan is too hard but that s good if you can handle Kaplan you can handle old good GMAT
PROS
Very short and condensed math reviews straight to the point
No smart aleck advice about some stupid tricks only math review exactly what I needed
Solid problems that illustrate a lot of traps and multiple ways of solving them
Starts with the basics arithmetic integers primes etc the stuff that anybody can uses a review of A lot of applicants underestimate how much they forgot the basics and skim/skip them I would not do that and that book does not either
Finally the number of questions and quizzes in this book is impressive I am giving a short summary of some of the sections of the book and number of quizzes and test questions Quiz questions are math only Test questions are GMAT type questions
CONS
No probability or combinations review which would be very helpful Get something I bombed my probability question on the GMAT
I went through this book at least 3 times helping others and I found that solutions don t include some of the most genius ways to handle the problems I think the authors of the questions went beyond themselves
Errors even though this is the 6th edition and it barely changed compared to the 1st and 2nd there are a few typos and just careless errors it s a shame

Kaplan ASVAB 2010 Edition The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery
>> ASVAB Study Guide vs Practical Use
To begin Kudos to Amazon for processing shipping this product in a timely manner and having it arrive in a condition that was better than expected It certainly saved a few from buying it from a major retailer
That said despite this being the 2010 version upon taking the ASVAB I quickly realized that very little of the information and preps found within were actually applicable to the subject matter of questions and topics covered on the actual test Fortunately it didn t prevent me from scoring extremely well but I would recommend that rather than spending money on a study prep for the actual test itself that instead you merely have or acquire a good working knowledge of the latest science principles/disciplines and not just the fundamental basics covered in this particular guide I can say with surety that my score had little to nothing to do with information I obtained from this book but rather from simply having a broad education in understanding of and/or working background in a multitude of subjects and theories to begin with that were actually found on my particular test
In this writer s opinion only strongly consider purchasing this book if you are in dire need of a refresher on high school level algebra and geometry which is information that can be readily obtained online if you fall into that category The rest of the subjects this book covers geology basic electronics theory basic mechanical knowledge automotive systems etc hardly appeared on the actual test at all and applied more to the most modern systems and technologies than this book presents
And bear in mind the AFQT score and your GT score are really where the weight falls for either your MOS selection choices or OCS consideration in regards to the ASVAB results Best of luck
>> Great
This book helped me alot with learning the material I needed to know Before I read this book I had no idea what to study after I studied and took the Asvab I scored highest in my school
>> Passed the asvab with a 84 used this book to study
Being a college senior I was a little nervous about the asvab as I have not taken any math courses in years now This book was a great refresher and contained detailed information on what to expect on the asvab The practice tests were great as they had explanations with the answer keys to make sure you comprehend the questions you miss If you are looking to patent your math and reading skills before taking the asvab I highly recommend this book as the questions on the actual asvab mimicked every problem set for math and reading in this study guide I do not give a five star because the mechanical and electrical examples did not show up on the actual exam

PHR Exam Prep Professional in Human Resources
>> Do not recommend
I just took the PHR exam and passed last week and wanted to review the books I used I found this Pearson guide to be the least helpful of all the books It was not organized well went into too much detail on some things and left out other points and was just way too cumbersome for test prep It s a big book with a lot of text and has much too much in it to make anyone feel confident in their preparation While I absolutely believe you should use more than one source 3 4 is optimal I would say this one didn t add anything for me Skip it
General PHR Prep Advice Use the Ann Bogardus PHR/SPHR book as your primary PHR test prep book The Kaplan test prep book is light on the content but drills down to the big things very simply I recommend reading the sections in Kaplan along with Bogardus Kaplan has a few practice tests that are helpful I also recommend getting a straight forward HR text book something that explains HR terms/concepts/legislation etc with out the slant of the exam itself Finally take practice tests to familiarize yourself with questioning and to drill down to things you need to keep learning It s a ton of content and I think there is little chance of knowing it all but by using a variety of sources you can cover your bases better
>> Great primary source for PHR studying
I self studed and relied primarily on PHR Exam Prep by Cathy Lee Gibson and then reviewed my weaker areas by reading specific chapters of PHR/SPHR Professional in Human Resources Certification Study Guide by Anne M Bogardus
This book was a great primary source for PHR exam preparation It is written in a very friendly manner and organized nicely The only draw back is that it lists quite a few further exam tips in each chapter of items that are NOT covered in the book and therefore require further research But I do think it is unrealistic to expect one book to provide it all This book gets as close as possible I believe
The book also comes with a great CD that has practice exam questions I found that this book made my studying more pleasurable versus Bogardus book
Good luck I studied a solid 4 months they recommend at least 3 months of prep work
I forgot to mention I passed my PHR exam in January 2010 first try Thank the Lord
>> Don t waste your money
This book was a waste of my money Only 20 of the material contained in this book is covered on the actual exam The accompanying CD had an enormous amount of errors and the test format has changed since the CD was created I would encourage any potential purchasers to save their money

Conquering the College Admissions Essay in 10 Steps Crafting a Winning Personal Statement
>> Great concise guide
Excellent and short guide to assist in writing those pesky admissions essays It has helpful info for all steps from the procrastination phase through the final polish stage and uses example to emphasize the point I would suggest this book and one more that is mainly essay examples there are multiple ones out there If you only have time for one this is probably it
>> Every parent should buy this book for their college bound child
If you want step by step excellent advice on how to focus your son or daughter on their college essay this book is exactly what you need From selecting a topic to figuring out how to construct the essay and make it special this is really an extraordinarily well thought out and accessible resource What was really wonderful was that the advice on constructing the college essay also spilled over into excellent pointers about writing more generally so it was a valuable book for more than just the college essay If you re wondering how your child is ever going to get started if s/he s hit a wall in putting the essay together or if you just feel as though the essay could be better get this book It s not easy helping a high school senior put together the college application I ve now done it with three children so it s a real gift to find a book this good that you can just give to your child and know they re getting excellent advice I really do think every parent should buy this book for their college bound high school student
>> Buy Conquering and one other book before even writing the first word
Conquering the College Admission Essay in the 10 Steps by Alan Gelb reviews basic high school composition and how it applies to the college applicant s personal statement Developing the technical aspects of conflict protagonists and timing are critical to an interesting product
I recommend that the editing parent and student read Conquering then everyone is on the same page Gelb crafts a great example of story telling by a classic mom then injects the critical aspects of a successful essay Very clever and interesting example for discussion between writer and editor
Another great book is On Writing the College Application Essay by Harry Bauld In contrast Bauld s book gives incredible insight into who is the recipient of the essay how to fashion the final product to intrigue the decision maker and their panel and the process of the application On Writing is smartly written for the Ivy League applicant or the best prepared future state school attendee
Together these two books will supply the writer with ammunition and the tools needed for a solid essay Good Luck

Anna Karenina SparkNotes Literature Guide
>> The greatest of all novels
I thought I knew what Anna Karenina was about A russian Madame Bovary of a higher social order who has the good taste to kill herself a priggish conventional husband a dashing inconstant lover and a bunch of hangers on Having recently read War and Peace and contemplated the world from its lofty heights I assumed Ana Karenina couldn t possibly match it or the Brothers Karamazov or Madame Bovary or Les Miserables or Our Mutual Friend I have just finished reading Anna Karenina and I stand corrected In its characterization its dialogues its descriptions of nature and ordinary life in the vividness and depth of its discussions about art politics economics morality in its dark sense of humor Anna Karenina is truly at the peak of the novelistic art Awkward passionate Konstantin Dmietrivich Levin and his unique brothers and his beloved Kitty gentlemanly Count Alexei Kirillovich Vronsky and his redoutable mother charming Stephan Arkadievitch Oblonsky and long suffering Dolly decent and good hearted Alexei Alexandrovitch Karenin plus assorted relatives servants peasants and noblemen are unforgettable
In Anna Karenina one is dazzled by Tolstoy s mastery of his art In Konstantin Levin s visit to his brother Nikolai the reader feels he has strayed into the Brothers Karamazov territory The description of a doctor s visit to Kitty Levin when she is giving birth to her son is worthy of Dickens as is the delightful Vasenka Veslovsky and even Stephan Arkadievitch himself The scenes in a sanatorium match anything in The Magic Mountain and the stream of consciousness sections near the end anticipate Joyce and Woolf Yet in spite of all these shadings and variations the Tolstoy s imprint is evident in the generosity and decency that pervade the novel along with absolute unflinching truthfulness In Anna Karenina Tolstoy took the novel to its perfection to the total synthesis of form and content of storyline and characters of descriptions and dialogue Although such points are debatable I don t believe there is a greater novel than Anna Karenina Reading Anna Karenina one stands at the pinnacle the Everest of this art
>> Kicking over the traces
Dostoevsky hailed the novel as a great masterpiece Of course I concur Stiva and Dolly Oblonsky quarrelled Stiva headed a government department His post had been obtained through the influence of his brother in law Alexey Karenin Konstantin Levin had been Stiva s close friend since boyhood Levin was in love with Dolly s sister Kitty Shcherbatsky The Shcherbatskys were a cultured aristocratic family Levin was in love with the whole family Levin learns from Oblonsky that Vronsky is a rival for Kitty s hand Levin asks her to marry him and she declines He is mortified
When Anna Karenina visited Moscow husband and wife Dolly and Stiva were reconciled and Kitty was infatuated Anna became the eighteen year old s model Then Kitty becomes heartbroken at the ball when Vronsky asks Anna to dance the mazurka with him Anna cuts short her visit to avoid running into Vronsky again but Vronsky it seems is a passenger on the same train she takes to return to Petersburg There is foreboding Anna return to Petersburg with a shadow Vronsky There is also the accidental death of a man by falling onto the tracks taking place as she arrives in Moscow for her visit to the Oblonskys Finally there is the death of Vronsky s horse Subsequently Anna meets Vronsky everywhere and Karenin can do nothing
Notable is Tolstoy s realism When Oblonsky visits Levin on his country estate he is negotiating to sell wood from a parcel owned by Dolly the food and atmosphere and the lives of the peasant workers are described The social classes are portrayed with understanding and precision In fact two characters in the novel Levin and Dolly draw closer to the peasants when they are in the country Religious practices are described The financial circumstances of Vronsky are reviewed He is stalled in his career as a cavalry captain The advanced social set is pictured along with the unseemly ways of its members Tolstoy uses irony The characters read English and French novels and play English games croquet the steeplechase and use knives to cut the pages
ANNA KARENINA is two stories that of Levin and that of Anna In that respect it resembles DANIEL DERONDA Do the stories support each other Well in a way they do and both intersect with the Oblonskys Levin and Anna are two aspects of their creator Leo Tolstoy On the one hand there is the reformer the spiritual philosopher and conscientious landowner and on the other the excessively loving social creature a product of the environment
This may well be the best novel ever written A contender for such a designation is WAR AND PEACE but this is better art in its sophistication and harmonious finely balanced construction I envy people who are reading ANNA KARENINA for the first time
>> A great book for mature readers
I loved the book I got here Anna Karenina This is a timeless classic by Leo Tolstoy about a woman torn by the decisions of her past and the confines of society and their affect on her happiness and her family There is also a sub story about socialism communism and the rights of the people and peasants in Russia The main point of the story is that Anna had an affair with someone that she actually loved the reader is left with the question Were her actions justified There is a lot of wonderful symbolism in this book as is seen by the metaphor of the train throughout it While many would enjoy it it is a fairly difficult read with some dry passages so I would recommend this to people over the age of 17 who have an interest in women s rights and politics The story was engaging though it may not be appropriate for anyone under the age of 13 as there are some thematic adult elements I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has an interest in politics sociology literature philosophy or questioning the ties in society that bind us down This was a fascinating novel on the affects that society can have on one lone woman and what a single decision can do to her and to her reputation Anna Karenina is a timeless classic not just because of its engaging story line but because of the reflections of what Anna felt that we can see in our own lives today

Barron s TOEFL iBT Internet Based Test 12th Edition
>> Deceptive reading questions very poor CD implementation
This is a review for the Barron s Toefl ibt book with a CD
All in all the book is good for preparation for the Toefl test but no way I would give it a 4 stars even It does cover all the sections in the test pretty good but the difficulty level of this book is way higher than the actual ETS standart for TOEFL is The reading passages are ok but the questions are deceptive some of them are actually a GRE quality which is way more difficult than TOEFL As for example in one of the questions you are asked to choose the word closest in meaning to radical The sentence in the text is as follows The revolution in flight required radical alteration in body form The answer choices are a very clear b very wide c very fast d very new Obviously this is NOT a 2 point question and everyone knows what radical means But differentiation between very clear very new and very wide is too much for the TOEFL test
Also in the listening sections the dictors sometimes speak so fast they re almost out of breath not acceptable quality for preparation And let me tell you I am not whining here because I can not get a score high enough I answer 92 95 of the questions correctly And I also understand the strategy of the maker better to be pleasantly surprised on the test then experience a rude awakening but it is just annoying
Then the CD is awful Mine does not save my login so every time I log in as a new user and which is most important it doesn t save my scores in the review The essay can only be saved in a practice mode which is also uncomfortable The test screen is microscopic which is fine for the listening and even speaking sections but staring at tiny characters for 1 hour during the reading section is no joke Trying to see what you have typed in the essay is also a pain
So solid 3 stars it is not more
>> The worse book ever
Don t even think about buying this book I have wasted my time with it There is no CD 2 and the activities always ask for it And even worse you can t return it because there is a return restriction for college audio books or any book with a CD ROM You will feel really disappointed with these editors
>> POOR
This CD set is useless without the Barron Book and when you buy the book the CD set comes with it So this CD set alone is a useless purchase

Most Popular The Scarlet Letter
Author : Nathaniel Hawthorne
Publisher : Longmeadow Press
Publication Date : 1995 11
The Scarlet Letter
>> Beautiful story
This is such a touching and inspiring yet heart rending story Hester is such an amazing character beautifully presented by Hawthorne One of my favourite reads during my student days and loved to this day
>> The scarlet Letter
The book was wonderful and in good condition I purchased it for my daughter who is in highschool The book arrived around the time it stated it would Above all of that the price was great
>> A Masterpiece
This book is a masterpiece of English not just American literature It is as beautiful as prose can be showcasing the amazing technique and depth that Hawthorne could communicate It isn t trite story of a puritan scandal rather it is a penetrating exploration of shame redemption and true love Melville had it right when he dedicated his book to the Genius of Hawthorne Not surprisingly this is one of the few American novels on the list of Great Books which should obviate any needless disputes about the quality of this novel constantly brought up by sophmoric readers that have little experience in literature
This edition is nicely bound and quite affordable For such a great book the introduction is unfortunately shallow and unscholarly Instead of exploring the themes or structure of the piece the write opts for a bland biography of Hawthorne a light summarization of the novel along with the Custom House prologue and finishes her essay with some obstuse comparisons of Hester Prynne with Monica Lewinksy Making such idiotic references to pop culture prompts the reader to wonder if this person understood the book at all
Fortunately the comments at the end of the novel are what makes this edition valuable Reading the reviews of contemporaries including Melville add to the reader s understanding and they are nice pieces of analysis in themselves The essay of Hawthorne s own son Jullian superbly catches the nuances of Hawthorne s style and should be held as a template for literary analysis
For the price and the reviews at the end I highly recommend this edition of a timeless classic

Barron s SAT Book only
>> Funny stuff
This is the first SAT prep book with a sense of humor that I ve ever run into The grammar section is full of silly examples that add life to what is far too often a dry subject and some of the wrong answers in the multiple choice sections are pretty funny though you have to pay close attention to notice those
The verbal sections are great The book provides clear specific explanations for each answer The glossary in the middle of the book also defines EVERY word used in the sentence completion practice tests
>> Great Score Improvement Tool
I am very thankful to have purchased this book it has helped me a ton My first score on the SAT was a 2080 I used Barron s to study for my second SAT Today my score is 2250 that s a 170 point score improvement for a score that was already excellent
Pros
The book explains certain tactics These tactics are like strategies for test taking and for each individual subject Some of them are common sense but many of them especially in the math portion are incredibly helpful
The book stresses guessing There s an entire chapter devoted to why students should guess on the SAT I was one of those students that would omit a question rather than risk a quarter point reduction This book had some eye opening cold hard statistics to show why students should guess
The math is pretty straight forward and well divided I had McGraw Hill s SAT 2009 for the first SAT The math was strong but it was not nearly as relevant as Barron s Barron s didn t even bother to teach students what types of math you ll see on the SAT it gives students just enough background information as well as test taking strategies
The practice tests are realistic in both scoring and content I m not sure whether or not Barron s used SAT licensed questions but you probably wouldn t know either way
Cons
The vocabulary section is useless It s one massive list of words There are hundreds of words The pull out vocabulary cards are kind of useful but the entire vocabulary section did not seem to stress vocabulary in context or word parts
The writing section was comprehensive and helpful but I very much preferred McGraw Hill s in depth worksheet method for writing
My suggestion is that if you need to raise your overall score your math score and your critical reading score you ll love Barron s On the other hand if you are focusing on your writing score or you need to work on your vocabulary you won t find Barron s as helpful

Cheap price on As I Lay Dying
Author : William Faulkner
Publisher : Cram Cassettes Study Guides
Publication Date : 1990 04
As I Lay Dying
>> Great Moments Choppy Narrative Wonderful Finish
Faulkner uses 59 short chapters most of them monologues to tell his story in AS I LAY DYING That story the final few days of Addie Bundren and the nine day odyssey of her coffin to Jefferson for burial gradually unfolds through the observations of 15 narrators seven of them Bundrens IMHO the effect of these short chapters and many narrators is mixed especially at the start of the novel when technique overwhelms story But eventually DYING achieves focus as a bleak and black comedy with the sly and manipulative Anse doing whatever is necessary to restart his life
Regardless there are great chapters throughout DYING where the narrative is completely riveting These describe the efforts of the Bundrens to cross a flood swollen river a fire in a barn and the emergence of the backward Bundren family in modern Jefferson escorted by soaring vultures And don t miss the wonderfully named Dewey Dell as she visits the pharmacies
AS I LAY DYING isn t a masterpiece like ABSALOM ABSALOM or THE HAMLET Still it s still great to see the amazing and sui generis Bill strut his stuff
>> Moving
I loved this book with its multiple themes and messages compelling story likable and hateable characters
>> Faulkner s Best but be cautioned
This read is not for the faint of heart of literature readers If you re a novice this book will give you a headache be warned so keep a good drink and some Excederin Migraine at your side But if you re a literary veteran who hasn t read this book shame on you for waiting this long You ve been missing out Definitely Faulkner s best but not my favorite Read my reviews to find out which one is my favorite

What High Schools Don t Tell You And Other Parents Don t Want You to Know Create a Long Term Plan for Your 7th to 10th Grader for Getting into the Top Colleges
>> One of the most helpful books I ve read
This book changed the way I m parenting our 13 year old Our youngest son 8th grade picked 3 dream goals from the list given which actually helped me understand him better I found several great ideas in the book to help him work towards his goals including the Congressional Youth Award It s given us a framework for the next few years He feels like I m on his side and I see my role as helping him get from his point A to point B
Because of this book I ended up encouraging him to apply for a summer language program that will help him reach his goals Before reading this book I wouldn t have considered it since it s expensive But they offer financial aid so we re going for it
I wish I would have had this info for our older 2 They lucked into opportunities teaching in Tanzania and TASP which helped them get into Swarthmore and the ivies This process would have helped our relationships though
I just gave a copy to a friend s daughter after she heard me rave about how helpful it was I d also like to share the info with parents at our rural school the only one in the county that doesn t offer AP classes Our kids and parents need all the help they can get
>> Good parts and some info lacking
All this competitiveness can drive a person insane I ve watched my daughter in a private school that is very demanding slowly disintegrating She is a nervous wreck sleep deprived and unfocused The parents are pushing and pushing the kids cheat it makes my daughter nuts since she works so hard and is getting B s and C s while the other kids have copies of the tests saved by older siblings The school puts so much pressure on them to succeed and most of the kids well they ll get in the colleges of their choice because their parents are legacies and the parents are so filthy loaded they can give 10 25 000 a year to the colleges That s how it really works if you want to get real about it
There is some good stuff in the book but a lot of stuff has been left out especially for kids who want a performing arts career Interlochen is okay but I would recommend a place called Stagedoor Manor for real professional training in the summers Most of the kids who did that camp are good students as well but they have gone on to NYU Yale CCM Boston Conservatory Carnegie Mellon Univ of Michigan etc Having Stagedoor on the resume helped a lot
She also has some good programs in other areas which I didn t know about it so it was worth the purchase I m assuming she wrote the book after she got her own kids through their ivy league schools perhaps not to share the info with other parents along the way but that is how it is out there
Also kids do better in school when they can focus To focus you need lots of sleep especially teenagers It s fact The schools today give entirely too much homework If the teachers are doing their job in school there is no need to come home and do another 5 6 hours of homework yep that s what the school gives 7th on up in my child s school They say 20 mins per subject however my husband and I have timed the work and my child is a good student and it isn t Not by a long shot Each teacher thinks their class is the most important Many parents won t admit their kids spend that amount of time on homework and many don t realize their kids are up late doing it I know only because my child is up I don t go to bed until she s done and kids are asking for homework help Some kids have tutors and the tutors do their work It is insanity because the schools know this is going on and yet do nothing IF it is a child of a high contributor
There are so many parents afraid to speak up The schools all of them will make you feel like you re in the minority but at the parents luncheons homework is all they talk about It is wrong for schools to deprive children the right to do things after school to unwind It is wrong to give homework on every weekend depriving kids of family and worship Kids need to do chores and help out well at least some of them Why deprive them of responsibilities or just dare I say having fun They are only kids once And the way the world is today to have them stay young as long as possible would be a pleasure
I love all the new books coming out on the Case Against Homework and even the Wall St Journal wrote an article about a study that proved homework does nothing to improve grades I know that with my child and her friends it only makes them despise the work because the learning isn t fun Running on 5 6 if they are lucky hours of sleep is not good especially when they have subjects like math science or languages first up in the mornings These classes require cognitive thinking at its best
Run schools like google runs its company and you d see a lot more kids loving it I hate the fact that my daughter has to put in 14 hour days learning I hate that there are kids staying up till 2am and then setting their alarms to wake up at 4am to finish their work yep in this school so many of them do that in 8th grade this technique used to be reserved for college And I hate that one poor child stayed up till 3am and couldn t do her latin homework and the teacher said tough it should have been done Mostly I hate that schools carry dead weight teachers who just can t teach hello MATH TEACHERS OUT THERE and every parent knows it but is petrified to speak up So we pay all this money for private school and then what People have to spend a bundle on tutors That s the crying shame And it s no wonder our kids are burned out by time they are ready to enter college It s the parents fault for pushing so hard And why is that Because they want their kid to be the best NO MATTER HOW THEY GET THERE
I think it s time to homeschool
As for this book it is depressing in some parts if you don t have money but some summer programs offer financial aid and it should be heartening to know that even the so called best private schools DON T always have the best teachers In fact there is a double standard of discipline as well If you re a high contributor you can pay to make things go away if your child gets in trouble If you don t contribute be prepared to be sent to a shrink for analysis
I for one have just about had it with all this competition and I think the year between high school and college when kids used to go backpacking and see the world before attempting to conquer college Well I think it needs to be moved up to between middle school and high school
>> Way too competetive
There is a lot of good information in this book to help your child make the most of his/her high school years however it promotes an extremely competitive approach to extra curricular and summer camp activities

Writing Your Dissertation in Fifteen Minutes a Day A Guide to Starting Revising and Finishing Your Doctoral Thesis
>> Exactly what I needed and expected
I admit that I was drawn to the somewhat irreverent title I read part of the introduction before I bought it to make sure that the 15 minutes a day was not real the author states that the title was intended to grab attention and that she was referring to the practice of ensuring that a person writing a dissertation spend at least 15 minutes every day writing what she calls developing the writing habit
This was precisely what I needed I am up against a major financial deadline to complete my thesis and have been frustrated at my slow progress This book helped me to understand that pretty much anyone can develop a writing habit i e learn to enjoy writing and that such a joy of writing would be immensely helpful to me professionally Slow progress is still progress as long as the progress is real
As the author states in her introduction this is not a textbook on thesis structure It is instead a guide to surviving the emotional landscape of writing a thesis As far as I know that makes it unique among books about writing
I can t imagine reading this book when it would have been most useful at the beginning of my graduate career It s a bit like parenting a child only recognizes the value of a parent s advice after they have made the mistakes that make the advice obviously useful Nonetheless I recommend this book wholeheartedly to PhD candidates at all levels
Back to writing
>> Dissertation Writers This book is important
I ll keep it short I m writing a dissertation after all
I highly recommend this book if you are about to begin your dissertation having trouble beginning almost everyone that must write one or have begun but aren t making much progress Full of helpful suggestions pointers tips strategies and most of all advice and support You will find that your problems are the same as many others And you will find also that everything you thought was unique about your so called short comings are really not so tragic I gained a lot of confidence from this book and see light at the end of the tunnel
Get this book and read it immediately Why not You ve been wasting weeks and months not writing This book will help you get started and help you to stay on track

>> Great Book

Good price for the excellent condition of the product and arrived on time
Thanks and I fill great with this transaction
>> Great Accompaniment for AP European History class
I got this for my daughters AP Euro class and she says its very helpful so far she has an A in the class so that tells you it is
>> Wonderful review and reference source
I absolutely loved this little book and yes it is small considering the amount of history it covers I used it to cram for the AP European History Exam and have actually picked it up a few times since then to read up on events that I have forgotten about It is really a pretty fun and quick read The author has done a very good job in condensing information without losing facts or important information Cause and effect can be easily picked up on as well as significance
Truly a marvelous source Highly recommended

>> Too Many Errors
I have found many errors in the answer guides even one in an example I emailed the company but no response I checked with other math teachers They agree that the errors I found are in fact errors It s annoying I think the book is terrific and the problems are excellent but please do not think you re loosing your marbles if you don t agree with the answer guide
>> Integrated Algebra
The author is hampered by the fact that the Integrated Algebra is
a brand new regents There is no prior history At the end of the
volume there is a good sample exam which emulates the actual ones
to be administered in January and June of 2008 In short don t
throw out your old Math A book because it contains more pertinent
regents practice questions
A cursory review of the new volume disclosed that the content is
similar to the Math A The sample exam is slightly more complicated
and theoretical
Parts 2 and 3 of the new sample exam are significantly more complex
than the comparable Math A I suspect that the initial
administrations of this new exam will produce a curve which reflects
the learning transfer in the new course
The examples in the new Integrated Algebra are pertinent There are plenty of illustrations on how to utilize the statistical calculator
to solve a plethora of problems particularly in probability and statistics
From a review of the sample exam I believe that candidates should
endeavor to maximize their score on Part I of the exam which is
fairly comparable to the current Math A
The new volume is replete with plenty of pertinent examples in
polynomials number theory equations elementary trigonometry and
probability/statistical inference amongst many other topics The
acquisition would be a good value for the price charged Students
would benefit from this volume because it contains sufficient illustrations to amplify the concepts tested on the live regents exam
Practice is helpful because the new regents criteria requires a
minimum passing grade of 65 in all the regents subjects pertinent
to obtaining a diploma in NYS
The new Integrated Algebra matter will be tested again in one form or another on the Collegiate SAT

regents practice questions

Middlemarch A Novel of Reform Twayne s Masterwork Studies
>> Not my kind of book
I m reading this book for my Great Books class at university and it is one of the hardest reads for most of the class I have a lot of difficulty getting into the story and find myself skipping huge parts of it and just using sparknotes to see if I missed anything
>> Reviewed plenty of times but it s a favorite so I ll add one more
I ll give you my favorite quote Will Ladislaw a devoted admirer of the book s lead Dorothea is caught by her in what appears to be a precarious situation with another woman I won t reveal who This woman flippanty tells Will he can follow Dorothea who fled the scene and explain his preference
He found another vent for his rage by snatching up her words again as if they were reptiles to be throttled and flung off Explain Tell a man to explain how he dropped into hell Explain my preference I ve never had a PREFERENCE for her any more than I have a preference for breathing No other woman exists by the side of her I would rather touch her hand if it were dead than I would touch any other woman s living
Quick review one aspect of this novel is about unwise choices in marraige HOWEVER this novel is NOT anti marraige as the most popular positive review seems to allude In fact at its core is the idea of marraige for love and in several cases this novel examplifies the need of pushing through trials with your spouse Lydgate Garth and even creepy Bulstrode No character walks away from their marraige in this novel and ultimately it has happy endings
What I love most about Dorothea is that she LEARNS throughout the novel That she changes In the beginning she is prudish opinionated and spurns romance to marry a man under a disillusioned ideal it will broaden her usefulness At first I didn t care for her I liked her sister better who becomes somewhat silly later on Through her trials Dorothea softens She is humbled She sees the value in others and spurns viscious gossip and judgments By the end of the book my opinion of her has managed to rotate 180 degrees
I ve already said more than I intended but I hope you give this novel a chance
>> Want to read a long book
This was a monster of a book Not recommended if you are a flaky reader Luckily I was forced to read this giant in about a week or so However I must admit that I lost track of a few of the characters throughout the book which is why a family tree is helpful But I suppose it just takes a matter of getting used to something and then it becomes second nature
I felt the same way about shows like Lost and Heroes I was a little turned off by how many characters there were However the more I watched the show the easier it became for me to figure out each of the characters back stories and how they were connected Middlemarch should be given the same chance and learning curve It takes time Overall it s a good read if you are into a long book I usually don t have the patience for a book this long but at least I can add it to my impressive reading list of books

DISSECTING THE ACT 2 0 ACT TEST PREPARATION ADVICE OF A PERFECT SCORER or ACT TEST PREP WITH REAL ACT QUESTIONS
>> ACT Self Help Book
Extremely concise and to the point My two sons found this a great way to prepare for the ACT in short snippets between classes on trips at home and when waiting anywhere A very helpful book especially when utilizing it with the real ACT sample test available online A GREAT preparation and review
>> Okay but not great
This book does not give many hints and tips on the tests The few tips it does have almost seem like they were written by a robot in some cases they directly tell you exactly what the ACT says in the Real ACT book So it is not exactly novel information For example for the writing section the book tells you the rubric used by the ACT for grading the section and this serves as the little foundation for what the authors say to do in the writing section I could have already read that info on the ACT Website or in the Real ACT book how is that new information
Furthermore the authors go over an entire test and why they chose certain answers That is probably the only helpful info in this book But when the ACT changes their online test readers of this book will have nothing to refer to See the authors did not put their own sample tests in the book but rather rely on the current ACT s online exam That test changes frequently and will make your book obsolete when it changes next
>> This book actually has more useful information than the big fat books
This is a very no nonsense book that only covers the most important stuff you need for the test No time is wasted on unnecessary stuff Those expecting a fat 800 page book my be surprised by the small size of the book but this book actually has more useful information than the big fat books written by people who may never have taken the real ACT in a decade Even if you feel the need to get one of the fat ACT prep books you should still get this book because it tells what you what is most important

Barron s AP United States History 2008 Barron s How to Prepare for the Ap United States History Advanced Placement Examination
>> Don t buy it
I made the mistake of not reading reviews when I brought this After wasting 2 weeks trying to understand this I quit and bought the REA AP US History book That provided me with a thorough review of all the topics covered on the exam I got a 3 However if I had started that book earlier I am sure I would have gotten a 5 All Barron s does is tell you how to write essays It is complete crap
>> Great for Those Who Know Their Stuff
This is exactly what I would look for in a review book for AP US I feel that too many students are looking for quick fixes and one stop location for AP US History the essay the actual history the multiple choice Well there is no shortcut to learning history whether listening to lectures reading Brinkley taking notes from AMSCO No one can force you to learn all that history in a week or two especially not Barron s Let s face it if Barron s US History was like Barron s AP Chemistry would anyone sit through it I think I d go back to Brinkley
This review books concentrates on honing your essay and multiple choice skills while giving you a brief overview of each important era Moreover the timeline in the appendix is really dandy when you re trying to remember the order events
I RECOMMEND this book if you need to finetune your skills and need some extra practice This is book is NOT RECOMMENDED for those of you who use this as a last ditch effort Moreover those with a weak will heavy procrastinators should not buy this book It is helpful to brainstorm the FRQ s with your friends on a rainy day Write down what you brainstormed and then the week or so before you take the test look over the FRQs you guys did together It ll help jog your memory
There was a jarring typo on one page in a multiple choice about inventions Otherwise it was a great book
>> Great shipping BAD BOOK
The shipping and condition were great but the book itself not so much
I wanted an AP US book that gave me course material i e review chapters
but this book was a compilation of essays with NO COURSE REVIEW
i returned it because i didn t even use it after i flipped through the pages once

Study Guide/Workbook to accompany Intro to Managerial Accounting
>> 5 star book
I have written this review for the preceding fourth edition of this book However I found it so great I wanted to let the potential buyers about this book
As a professional studying part time I was first afraid of the size and apparent density of this book However it s turned out to be the best manual I have ever experienced whether it is in exact sciences or social sciences
1 The text is clearly written and understandable which is the reason why this is a 600 page book the authors take their time to explain clearly but still as succinctly as possible what they want you to understand then learn At the end of the day the book reads fast
2 Within each chapter there are plenty of 150 word illustrations of concrete examples taken from leading newspapers or accounting journals which help linking the theory the main body of the book to the practice real life These are up to date in addition to be interesting
3 There are multiple quick exercises and problems throughout the chapters which are answered with explanations at the end of each chapter On many occasions they have helped me understand more deeply the discussion of the chapter and they have also helped me perform in the exercises and problems I had to do myself during my course more by guiding me rather than stupidly working by complete analogy
4 The book is clearly structured with learning objectives stated at the beginning of each chapter with a brief description and at the end of each chapter with a brief summary Paragraphs are clearly defined there are definitions of key words and concepts at the end of each chapter complemented by a complete index
5 Last but not least this is the first time I have experienced an actually useful and enjoyable multimedia book By going on the book s website one can download a 30 minute presentation audio narrated text or narrated video slide show for each chapter storable on an iPod and/or any computer Great before reading the chapter as well as after In addition one or two additional real life video examples are available per chapter in a journalistic type reportage There are also many useful quick exercises on line which also give a short explanation when your answer is wrong excel templates and more
In summary this book is surely great for full time students As for part time students or professionals who want/need to get an introduction or refresh of their memory about accounting who will have to struggle with a busy schedule and lack of enthusiasm to start studying in the evening this book is perfect Congratulations to the authors

Best price on The ARRL Extra Class License Manual For Ham Radio Arrl Extra Class License Manual for the Radio Amateur
Author : Ward Silver
Publisher : Amer Radio Relay League
Publication Date : 2008 07 01
The ARRL Extra Class License Manual For Ham Radio Arrl Extra Class License Manual for the Radio Amateur
>> Take the Amateur Extra class license exam with confidence
The steps to upgrade to Amateur Extra class license are achievable and worth the time investment If you want to take the exam with confidence then using this well written book as your study guide will help do that
First some info about the Element 4 exam to upgrade from General to Extra class The exam consists of 50 multiple choice questions that are selected from the officially released pool effectivity July 2008 of over 738 questions with answer key At least 37 questions must be answered correctly to pass The exam is administered by a team of volunteer examiners who are themselves Amateur Extra Class radio operators
So what makes this book the study guide to own
The chapters are organized by topics that align with the sub elements in the exam and provide the much needed technical context and background for all the questions At this licensing level the numerous schematics diagrams and plots help significantly with the learning Learning the technical topics for Amateur Extra requires much more math skills electronics background and technical RF knowledge than General class Nearly 3/4 of the study guide is devoted to this technical context and background material that promotes understanding and minimizes memorization
The last 1/4 of this study guide lists the entire Element 4 question pool of 738 questions also organized by sub element I was able to work off each chapter and its related questions one sub element at a time during my spare time over the course of about six weeks
This is the book previous edition I used to study and pass the Amateur Extra Class license exam I didn t need to use any other books CDs or online practice quizzes As such I definitely recommend this study guide
CQ CQ CQ DE K7CRC K7CRC K7CRC K
>> very helpful but
This is probably the best study guide you can find I gave four stars instead of five
because I thought the explanation to some of the math problems could have been
a little more clear To understand the math I used a book called Circuit Concepts by
Thomas Kubala I wanted to learn the material and not just memorize and the ARRL manual
was really a great help I passed on the first try with a 96
Beware however unless you have a background in radio you re probably going to have to
put in some time if you want to do well on the exam I studied at least one or two hours a day for
several weeks I also used several of the practice exams and paid close attention to the
answers I got wrong If you re prepared then the exam isn t really too difficult but you have
to know the material Good Luck
>> The ham General
After reading other books on upgrading to General I found information within the first few pages here that were not available in other guides and books that proved very helpful If you are going for the upgrade to General this is the book for you and good luck on your test

Barron s ACT 36 Aiming for the Perfect Score
>> ACT book
The book arrived on time and in good shape I recommend the seller for future purchases
>> Great review but beware of science
I found the Barron s 2400 book to be most helpful in my reviewing for the SAT and so purchased the ACT 36 as my only practice book for taking the ACT One book was not enough practice for scoring well on the ACT but if I had to choose one it would be Barron s because the review for each section is concise and sufficient
My only problem
BEWARE OF THE SCIENCE SECTION If you buy this book DO NOT USE the 5 6 7 method UNLESS you have practiced with the trick enough to comfortably apply it The book mentions that it is most difficult to purposely take a test out of order and this is every bit true I did not have time to practice with the 5 6 7 method and when I tried to go out of order on the actual science test my mode of thinking fell apart and I started to panic for skipping so many questions in a row I literally feared answering only a quarter of the questions I only pulled myself together after going back to do them in order
Long story short following this method without practice was a disaster so I want to caution others who might study the night before
>> The Missing Link
I have yet to finish the book but from the sections I have been through english and math are well written and include worthy advice I have not taken the ACT yet but I do recommend reading the book before you take the test because it has a fair amount of content It is a new book published in early 2009 so much of the content is up to date This is a good book to study for the ACT with no matter what others have written about it

Romeo and Juliet No Fear Shakespeare
>> Interesting adaptation of this classic tale
I enjoyed this interesting adaptation of Romeo and Juliet It has been a challenge to find supplimental material to help my students understand and appreciate the drama and humor in this fine work of art I often begin with an adapted version of the tale for my young readers Visit to review L Heflick
>> NOFEAR SHAKESPEARE ROMEO AND JULIET
This is an excellent book It gives you the original version of the play along with the play written out in plain modern English This is great if you really find the old language difficult to understand I highly recommend this book for studying purposes Use it in conjunction with Cliffs notes and you have it made
>> Not a graphic novel
I am a high school teacher for special needs students I searched for a graphic novel of Romeo Juliet and found this book I thought that this book would have illustrations as well as current language but there are no illustrations at all It is very cool with the Shakespearean text on one side and the translated text on the other but for my students who have difficulties reading text of any kind illustrations would have been even better I have definitely used this book with my instruction so I do recommend it I was disappointed when I received it though because based on the descriptions I read before I purchased it I misunderstood that it was a graphic novel

I received the book in a timely manner I was pleased with the price of the book which is why I ordered it The only negative comment I have is that there was no indication that the book I was receiving would be an EXAMINATION COPY This was in black bold face print on the front cover of the book maybe that is why it was so inexpensive However my daughter was able to successfully use it for her high school College English class

>> Very good
I bought this college review for a young friend who is considering colleges She has great potential in math and I wanted her to look at schools that would offer her more opportunities in math I hope she will find the product helpful as she and her parents try to match her unique abilities and preferences with the right college
>> Best College guide on the market
This is definitively the best college guide on the market Ranks the school by academics by financial expense by retention ratio by major by state it s all in there Should you buy just one college guide that would be the one
>> Mark 07/24/09
I bought this book and went to activate the free 10 day pass to the Premium Online Edition and kept getting an error and could not access the site I tried for 5 days I called their customer service and spoke on two separate occasions with an extremely rude person She was zero help and didn t care that I could not access this College Guide She told me to contact the webmaster and I did and never heard back from them and they actually tell you in an auotmated email not to contact them again that they will get back to you within 48hours Sure I called again and got the same apathetic response from customer service that she could not do anything for me So I returned the book it has all dated information anyway and bought Barron s Profiles of American Colleges which I am very happy with and they give their college ratings in the book
US News is a total rip off and they lure you in with free offers that they have no intentions of giving you
