Examkrackers 1001 Questions in MCAT Organic Chemistry
>> great workbook
Great practice problems with answers I like that the sections refer to the lectures and tell you where you need improvement
>> Got me a 12 on BS
Did every question in this book and saw my AAMC practice scores increase over the weeks I did 100 questions of the book each week for 3 months leading up to the real test and got me a 12 I am still in the process of applying but feel much more confident with a 34 on my plate thanks to this book
There are some errors in the book but keep an eye out for them and consult with those PhDs you pay so much to have around on any that strike you as incorrect
>> o chem 1001
book is pretty helpful the questions seem fairly easy though this is probably because my o chem professors ROCK and my class has been quite rigorous the mcat o chem questions seem easy because I ve had such a good o chem education the 1001 questions book is a decent review though

Master the LSAT Prep Course Series
>> LSAT Test Review
I couldn t afford to take a full on LSAT course so I opted for the books instead I absolutely felt that this book adequately prepared me for the test If you can t spend the money but can put the time in then this book is absolutely for you
>> Utterly superior
I am currently teaching an LSAT prep course at an adult education center I fell into this and have developed many of my own materials which I am pretty proud of But I will probably replace them with this book
Master the LSAT is vastly better than Kaplan or McGraw Hill s Curvebreakers the two other books I ve looked at in depth I wonder why it isn t in every bookstore the only reason I ve thought of is that is plunges right into the test without spending time on quelling test anxiety This book assumes you are pretty bright and will work But it is not difficult to read in fact the writing is clear penetrating even elegant You do not need to be a genius to profit greatly from this book
No other book I ve looked at even comes close
>> Good Seller
I received this prep book in a timely manner It arrived as described Good seller

if you are prep n for LSAT and tight on cash save your pennies to put toward the most recent lsat preptest s I was able to purchase most tests from 28 58 and there is a big difference between older and more current tests well at least in my opinion I say if you are testing in 2010 you should really try to purchase 48 forward or at a min purchase 55 forward The more preptests you work through the more familiar you get with LSAC s wording format and tricks NO there are no repeat questions but boy are there sure close copies They love to repeat certain subjects and certain argument structures so well worth your time and money to review this stuff

Gatekeepers Turtleback School Library Binding Edition
>> The Gatekeepers
Being a retired director of admissions having worked at three independent colleges and a public university I am interested in reading books dealing with admissions offices The Gatekeepers is well written an interesting read and appears to be carefully researched and a fairly accurate depiction of the operation of a rather selective admissions office
>> Put Yourself in the Admissions Guy s Shoes
I gave this book a 4 vs a 5 because it is now dated It is not a how to book and its insights only apply to small liberal arts colleges who have the staff to applicant ratio to agonize about each applicant s holistic portrait Large universities particularly public institutions do not have the staff to go much beyond the basic stats for each applicant although some are now trying to go in a more holistic direction
That said it does help the reader student or parent to step into the shoes of an admissions officer and understand what the college admissions process looks like from the other side of the desk Understanding and empathizing with your ultimate reader helps you suitably prepare your communication for that audience
Admissions people seem to be young idealistic humanistic savvy committed and at certain times of the year overwhelmed and exhausted
That tells me Be genuine cut through the boredom but still be authentic be original but not gimicky be your best self but be yourself And don t be longwinded
>> Valuable Read for Parents of Highschool students
One of the most valuable books that any parent of a perspective college student will read The author shares a rare view into the closed door spaces of the admissions process bringing some perspective of the experience from the admissions officers and guidance counselors This book brings a touch of reality to the often frenetic pace of the college search and admissions process revealing there is often much subjectivity in this experience A fast read and well worth your time and attention

this book is a complete waste of time my life and money this book is so boring i would rather count all the grains of sand in the world i give this book a rating of 1000000000000000000000000000000000
>> Acceptable
This book arrived with a little smell
Smells like ites been stacked on the shelft or somewhere for awhile
but the condition for book pages are ok no missing pages so far
>> Song of the Family
John Steinbeck writes with heart and muscle Whether penning a lumbering masterpiece such as East of Eden or a short parable such as this he imbues character and setting with thought and feeling
Kino a young husband and father in the Gulf town of La Paz goes out one morning to dive for pearls He is happy He hears the song of his family in the trees yet also hears the song of evil murmuring in the tail of a scorpion His senses are tuned to the world around him to his village in particular and so it is that his discovery of a magnificent pearl comes as a sudden surprise and responsibility Soon he and his family are threatened by the greed of doctors and priests businessmen and busybodies Kino s wife wants the pearl tossed back into the sea but Kino cannot block his ears to the pearl s song of fortune and he presses ahead with his own plans
Based on a Mexican folk tale this story sings its own somber tune through the words of Steinbeck It s a morality tale an ode to hardworking men and women and a reminder of the things that are most important Like Pearl Buck s The Good Earth and Armstrong Sperry s Call it Courage this short but powerful tale highlights regular people facing the challenges of greed and cowardice Ultimately it s a song of the family a song Steinbeck sings often through his books

The Unlikely Disciple A Sinner s Semester at America s Holiest University
>> Pure enjoyment
I cruised through this book and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it except for one part in the middle that made me cringe You will know when you get there As someone who came from the fundamentalist tradition and left this book was both a kind acknowledgement that there are many great aspects to the conservative Christian lifestyle and also a great reminder as to why I left I would recommend this book to my Christian and my non Christian friends Oh and the author is extremely talented A great read
>> A hilarious and poignant look at a semester abroad
As someone quite familiar with American evangelical culture encompassing a smattering of endearing qualities and a host of ugly ones I had already formed some preconceived notions before embarking on my latest read The Unlikely Disciple A Sinner s Semester at America s Holiest University The book chronicles the journey of Kevin Roose the youthful author and aspiring guerrilla journalist as he transitions into a semester at Liberty University the late Reverend Jerry Falwell s brainchild and a conservative Christian utopia from an undergraduate program at Brown University a notch or two above Sodom and Gomorrah Warily I predicted that Roose s reflections would fit neatly into one of two know thy enemy categories Either he would feign empathy with his new classmates and faculty while cloaking all observations in a thinly veiled stream of sarcasm and condescension or he would overly humanize them anthropologist style like one might see in a probing wildebeest documentary on the Discovery Channel Even the cover art and various other promotional photographs the author in a Liberty University t shirt with Falwell s books scattered around sitting alone in a large grassy area directly in front of a spotless white church etc hinted strongly at satire
In the end spoiler alert neither prediction was entirely accurate Roose s memoir lacked a fatal flaw perhaps his greatest sin was engaging in a bit of self indulgent melodrama but and unlike the denizens of Sodom and Gomorrah his iniquities are easily forgivable In fact if Roose weren t so unnervingly honest in his evaluations of both the school and his own shifting perspectives his brief jabs of alarmism could easily come off as irony True he has a slightly grating tendency to close chapters with sentences like All semester I ve been worried about getting in over my head at Liberty but what if it s too late And true it is these passages that ring the least authentically a lifelong secular student from an Ivy League school stands on the precipice of conversion while studying at the epicenter of American religious anti intellectualism but it seems that Roose nevertheless wrote them out of a sincere desire to express his rapidly expanding gray areas
On the other hand the author s continuing revulsion with the institutionalized homophobia that he finds at Liberty provides a periodic gut check both for himself and his readers against growing too comfortable with the notion of right wing fundamentalism as warm and fuzzy This book is thus potent because it illustrates the fragile disconnect between abstract disgust and visceral well something approaching fraternit No it is not a call to ecumenism It is also not primarily a repudiation of some of the more disturbing facets of the evangelical lifestyle or more specifically of Falwell s most appalling public statements What this book undoubtedly is however is a gentle nudge away from demonization and towards if not empathy at least toleration And although conservative Christian readers may be unlikely to agree Roose s message applies to their anachronistic edicts on the outside world as much as it does to the ill informed heathens who mock them

Where to buyThe ARRL General Class License Manual for Ham Radio Level 2 is the best
Author : American Radio Relay Legaue
Publisher : Amer Radio Relay League
Publication Date : 2007 03 01
The ARRL General Class License Manual for Ham Radio Level 2
>> OK But Not Great
I prefer the Gordon West series of license exam manuals over the ARRL versions It probably gets down to a difference in the way that people can learn and retain information but I found the ARRL General Class manual to be inadequate to my needs And I passed the exam on the first try
>> Take the General class license exam with confidence
The steps to upgrade to General class amateur license are achievable and worth the time investment If you want to take the exam with confidence then using this book as your study guide will help do that
First some info about the Element 3 exam to upgrade from Technician to General class The exam consists of 35 multiple choice questions that are selected from the officially released pool effectivity July 2007 of over 480 questions with answer key At least 26 questions must be answered correctly to pass The exam is administered by a team of volunteer examiners who are Amateur Extra Class radio operators
So what makes this book the study guide to own
The chapters are organized by topics that align with the sub elements in the exam and provide the much needed context and background for all the questions This additional material fosters understanding and minimizes memorization
For reference the appendix lists the entire Element 3 question pool of over 480 questions also organized by sub element I was able to work off each chapter and its related questions one sub element at a time in my spare time over the course of a few weeks The toughest sub element topic for me to learn was Propagation This sub element topic identifies several of the various atmospheric effects on RF communication and describes their effect on the different amateur bands and modes
BTW This is the book I used to study and pass 100 the General Class license exam As such I definitely recommend this study guide

Surgical Recall
>> Key to success in the OR
I found the OR to be an almost laughable game once I started reading Recall The attendings would ask the exact questions in Recall in almost every case with very few exceptions Knowing what case you are about go into and taking the 10 mins or so to read the relevant chapter or section in Recall made answering those questions very easy
I never tried to read Recall from cover to cover Doing so would be painfully difficult as it is truly just a list of high yield facts with very little interpretation or explanation
Recall is organized around procedures / diagnosis and as such is of limited use as a reference for expanding a differential diagnosis in a case write up
It is however an absolutely invaluable tool for surviving the OR
>> Pimp book
This is an excellent book for getting your attendings questions right but it isn t going to help you for the shelf exam It doesn t give clinical vignettes and doesn t introduce principles of managing conditions Most of the surgery shelf exam has to do with managing post operative complications or how to manage a surgical patient as a medical intern With that said this book gives general information that a beginner needs to know ranging from where the surgeon stands and how to tie knots to how to classify orthopedic fractures It is a good pocket book but if you only have one source to choose to pass the shelf leave this one at the store
>> acceptable
This book is fantastic to study from The diagrams triad listings and Q A format is wonderful for my surgery rotation as a PA student However the book is a little heavy to carry around during rotations in the lab coat As a student it s imperative to carry around as many references as possible so when a question arises i have a quick way to look it up but this is just a little too bulky but it is perfect to study from

The Book of General Ignorance
>> Non Trivial Trivia for the Lover of all Things Factual
For the dedicated informavore cracking the first page of this book is like ushering a person with a drinking problem into an Oktoberfest celebration Consisting of over two hundred questions that many people THINK they know the answer to The Book of General Ignorance proceeds to deflate the readers pride in their own knowledge with both dispatch and humor
With queries ranging from What human artifacts can be seen from the moon to What would you use to overpower a crocodile the authors cover topics ranging from astrophysics to particle physics from the sex lives of earwigs to the homicidal habits of hippos all in clear and humorous prose
It would be tempting to look at this book as simply a larger and more explicit version of picking up a box of Trivial Pursuit cards and going through them one by one And if you re someone that has actually done this Sadly I m one of those people you ll love this book For many readers delightful as the tidbits provided are it will leave one with the odd and unfulfilling feeling one gets when one goes to a party not having had dinner and all that is available is a vast array of tasty appetizers one gets stuffed but keeps vaguely missing the main meal That said there is a takeaway message or two that have lasting substance
The first message from author John Lloyd who quotes from the man who DIDN T invent the light bulb Thomas Edison We don t know a millionth of one percent about anything Secondly Lloyd feels that in addition to drives for food shelter and sex mankind has a fourth drive curiosity And we should indulge this drive Lastly much that we think we know we are in error about The book in a funky and funny way is a call to humility a call to lay aside pomposity cockiness and fear the better to take off whatever lenses we have been gazing at the world through and to take a fresh look at information that is often staring us in the face Information that just might push back the shoreline of ignorance just a few feet As narrow as that newly uncovered beachfront might be it is bound to hold fascinating clues to what is under that ocean of ignorance that we humans so badly want to explore
>> The Book of General Ignorance
This is a very informative and entertaining book of facts It debunks old wives tales and illuminates history
The article about Napoleon s most embarrassing defeat was hysterical If you love history trivia general knowledge and witty writing you ll love this book
>> a good bathroom or nightstand book
This is a nice light book with each question being answered in about 1 page a good book to read for quick reading sessions like on the pot or before going to sleep some stuff is pretty interesting some stuff I definitely already knew Not bad if you re looking for an easy read that s good to pick up and put down alot

The Duggars 20 and Counting Raising One of America s Largest Families How they Do It
>> Fun quick read about a lovable family
Our family had great fun reading about the Duggars And their recipe for rolls is now a staple at our house
>> Even if you are not a Christian
As a mom of 4 I am always looking for new ideas and strategies Although we are not a Christian family there is plenty to learn from the Duggars I loved her ideas to teach the very little ones to be still especially helpful when you have older ones whom you are homeschooling as we do There is lots of good info about chores scheduling etc and includes many resources to help with these areas as well as homeschooling I also love Michelle and Jim Bob s calm and peaceful attitudes when dealing with discipline They talk about how they were not always this way and how they came to be this way I think it is a great reminder to all of us that no one is perfect but we can always be better parents and people They go into a lot of detail about the past and present businesses both good an bad As well as how they worked to be debt free This was a huge inspiration to our self employed family We are struggling with getting out of debt as well and any help or words of encouragement with this great task is always nice to hear or read The way I look at it is Parents who can keep that many children healthy and happy and VERY well behaved with out loosing their minds or sense of humor have got to be doing something right The only negative thing I can say is the recipes are all super unhealthy Most are full of processed and canned foods and this is just not the way our family eats But for some I am sure they are yummy
>> Great Read Love the Duggars
The Duggars have always amazed me and I love watching their show on TLC The book is packed with useful information We tried one of their recipes this evening Tater Tot Casserole It got a thumbs up from my kids I got the book from the library and I am going to buy it because I know it s a book I will read over and over

A Is for Admission The Insider s Guide to Getting into the Ivy League and Other Top Colleges
>> A Good Place to Start
I checked online through several college sites to find a book that gives a concise informative review of the admissions process This is the title that kept coming up A is for Admission has the details that flesh out the generalized articles in annual editions of U S News World Report s America s Best Colleges Now the system actually makes sense to me and the book is an easy read My son just signed up for 9th grade and I wondered if I was starting too early but after reading the book I believe middle school is the best time to start The way I see it our kids tell us their goals and we give them the support they need to reach those goals This book helped me as a parent to better understand how to support my son I would love to see a book of this quality that described the admission procedures at California s top universities and colleges
>> Reality Check for Ivy League Wanna Be s
As an independent college consultant I meet many first time clients whose Dream School is among the Ivies or other elite institutions Based on experience I have a pretty good sense right off the bat whether the student has a shot at these most competitive schools Dr Hernandez s book spells out specifics that can help such a student know what it will take to get into an Ivy and can also help families gauge whether or not their aspirations for the student are at all realistic
The author s sober straightforward explanation of the AI Academic Index a formula Ivies and other elite schools use for quantifying applicants qualifications facilitates taking an objective look at one s credentials rather than running on hope adrenalin ego or parental adulation I also appreciated the author s frank discussion of tipping points such as athletics special talents legacy development or minority status
Much of Dr Hernandez s advice is applicable beyond the Ivies to many highly selective colleges Even schools who do not use a formula like the A1 use some kind of admissions criteria that incorporates similar elements test scores GPA or class rank However I think the tonality of the book may be intimidating to families whose college bound children are most likely not geared to the most competitive colleges Other gentler common sense how to books may be more appropriate and easier to swallow for the majority of families of college bound teens
>> Informative but Very OUTDATED
I ve purchased few college admission related books in preparation for my daughter Junior This book will be decently informative if you are not so updated on the latest college admission process requirement I am sure this book was a sensational hit back in 10 12 years ago
BUT this is 2009
Book cover said Updated and Revised but I can t tell when it was updated and what was updated Many details are from 1995 and the latest data is from 2000
It doesn t even cover SAT 1 s Writing part Acceptable SAT score used is way too low and an acceptance rates are too higher for 2009 2010 since data was from before 2000 There has been many new changes since 1995 2000 that this book will not help much book will give you some general idea

Best price on Raising Venture Capital for the Serious Entrepreneur

Raising Venture Capital for the Serious Entrepreneur
>> Well written and easy to understand highly recommend
Just finished the book Very good understanding of how the VC game is played This book will help entrepreneurs formulate a targeted biz plan with a better chance of funding
Well written and easy to understand highly recommend
>> Well Done A Must Read For All Entrepreneurs
I wanted to gain a better understanding of venture capital financing for purposes of my own professional development and to expand the services I offer as a CFO consultant As I searched out different books on the subject I came across Dermot Berkery s Raising Venture Capital for the Serious Entrepreneur This book was exactly what I was looking for
Mr Berkery provides his readers a clear and complete understanding of every aspect of venture capital Some of the areas that were quite helpful included understanding the unique cash flow and risk dynamics of an early stage venture how much capital to raise and when creating winning business plans not what you have read in other books how to value early stage ventures and negotiating all facets of a term sheet
In addition to his clear writing style he provides well thought out explanatory exhibits mini cases and exercises all of which reinforce the concepts in a meaningful way
I would highly recommend this book to any entrepreneur and those that support them who really wants to and needs to understand venture capital as a funding source And if there are college professors out there teaching venture capital this book has to be the one you use as a textbook Mr Berkery s depth of experience in the venture capital world comes through clearly in his writing he knows what he is talking about and has a great way of explaining it to those who want to learn more
William M Wright II CPA
Chesapeake VA USA
>> Excellent introduction to the subject
I m an experienced senior manager who has made acquisitions and initiated new businesses from the corporate side but this book gave me a lot of new insight It does an excellent job of explaining what venture capitalists are looking for and how entrepreneurs should interact with them The subject of how to assess the value of a startup was good although as you might expect somewhat general I also appreciated the insight on what investors in various finance rounds need to do to protect their investments An early round investor for example could get wiped out in a later round even though the founders and later investors do fine if the company valuation doesn t increase as expected The book also includes a lot of detail on the elements of a term sheet and what to look out for Five stars for sure

The Canterbury Tales MAXNotes Literature Guides
>> Canterbury Tales
I indeed ordered Canterbury Tales as a gift for my daughter There were many options as to the style of book available I specifically searched for something appearing a little older or different that was a hardcover and especially liked the idea it was cloth covered that sold me on this item When it arrived however it was hardcover but not cloth covered rather paper covered that looks like cloth on the actual print That was very disappointing if I had of known I would not have placed this order
>> Amazon appears to have combined the reveiws for several different editions
The Bantam edition ISBN 0 553 21082 3 edited introduced and translated by Peter G Beidler is inexpensive but readable I like having the original on one side and a translation on the other because it enables me to make an attempt at reading the original and then check my comprehension with the translation The introduction and notes are informative but not intrusive It s true that only ten of the tales are included but there is enough to keep you busy for awhile I recommend this if you are looking for an inexpensive and portable edition
>> Why is Chaucer so great
Umm Did not enjoy this book Characters were almost all lewd and bad people crooks and the like One dimensional characters all The stories they told were sometimes interesting at least

This is probably the first book you should buy in your LSAT preping Keep in mind though there are free resources you can find you just need to google and hunt around for them You can even join a law school message board/forum and ask around for study materials there
Anyways this book is a nice start because it offers you 3 tests explanations for the wrong answers and some strategies for taking the test It s a pretty easy read and they really work hard to break the test down for you to bite sized nuggets It s not the last book you ll buy for the LSAT but it works and you ll probably feel a bit more confident in your abilities after using this book
>> Book Exceeded Description Expectations
Received this book very quickly and in GREAT condition even better than described by the seller
>> Must have
I started this book after having completed all the PowerScore LSAT bibles and it was a good starting point to try out the PS techniques on real lsat questions This book has 3 prep tests along w/ explanations and answers After PowerScores great info I felt that the tips section of this book was lacking but not a waste of time simply not in depth enough for me This is a good practice book and I truly appreciated that the question difficulty was noted which helped me better gauge my level of understanding Must have

Autobiography of Malcolm X SparkNotes Literature Guide
>> Malcolm X
A timeless classic This book tells the metamorphasis of a strong Black man from boyhood to manhood Through all of his trials and tribulations Malcolm always found a way to gain strength and grow in both mind and spirit A must read for all Americans We must not forget his contributions to our society
>> Malcolm s transformation and search for identity
The autobiography of Malcolm X was probably the first book I read without a teacher coercing me to It tells the transformation of Malcolm Little into a street hustler who goes to prison but then ultimately is reformed by the Nation of Islam and becomes Malcolm X the black nationalist I think this book should be read by anyone who is in search of themselves because Malcolm s story is a search for his own identity and heritage When I read X it changed my life because like many black people I didn t know who I was and even though society was telling me who I was suppose to be I didn t necessarily identify with that I give the autobiography of Malcolm X five stars
>> one of a kind
This is a book everyone should read It s a book you can t seem to put down There is a part of this book that i love I read aimlessly until I learned to read selectively with a purpose This book changed the way i viewed certain things in life

Where to buy The PowerScore LSAT Reading Comprehension Bible
Author : David M Killoran
Total Page : 360
Publisher : PowerScore Publishing
Publication Date : 2010 01 01
The PowerScore LSAT Reading Comprehension Bible
>> Got extra cash need help with RC this is for you
I am a BIG fan of power score products I utilized this series for GMAT and now for LSAT and each time I saw results I am fortunate to have a small budget to purchase these basic prep books and followed a stringent 3 month self study plan I didn t have 1500 to spend on a professional prep program and I did well on the test It takes focus discipline and great prep books such as POWER SCORE
Ok I love Power score can you tell BUT this is my least fav in the LSAT series but it is still a great book I just believe that RC is well the easier of the sections to study for that is why I am iffy about the need for this book I worked my way through the entire book and I did walk away with some decent knowledge but honestly I only applied about 1/3 of it on the test simply because of time I just found their approach to be really time consuming however I also tend to be a fast reader so the thought of doing the breakdown they suggest was just overwhelming for me I will say this if this is a section you are struggling with buy the book but if you are a ok put your pennies toward more lsac preptest s
>> Unnecessary
I am a huge fan of his other two LSAT prep books but I found the reading comprehension book to be slightly unnecessary It was basic intuitive information I did find the common errors section helpful seeing as I am now more aware of traps I basically found out from this book that completing each prompt in 8 minutes and 45 seconds their recommendation to be extremely doable without using any of their tips A good book to skim but not worth spending precious study time over
>> PowerScore Reading Comprehension Bible
I would really recommend this product if you are studying for the LSAT and struggle with this section PS does a really great job of breaking down what you need to know and provides ample sections to work through

>> Good to refresh and prepare for the exam
Good stuff This book does not contain very detailed in depth information There is just a general overview of each area in lab science Good for refreshing your knowledge
>> Great book Wish it Had More Questions
Good book Exciting to find that I did not have to flip pages to get my answers after practising Answers were right opposite to the questions This book helped me a whole lot with my semester finals Wish it had more questions though
I cannot comment on how good it is for the BOR because I am still in my final year and so have not taken the BOR but I do feel that it touches a lot of important topics and I did learn a lot of new stuff from the book
>> Seems like a very good review book
This seems like it will be a good review for someone just finishing their CLS degree However I am just beginning so this book doesn t really help me yet as i had hoped it would in the present but i will be sure to use it in the future

>> Save your money
There is an OVERWHELMING amount of information provided by this If I had purchased this before I entered nursing school and started working with it then I dont think I would know 1/10th of the information that is provided Save your money and stick to reviewing the meds you learned about in school

Where to buy Barron s AP Chemistry order it now

Barron s AP Chemistry
>> Solid review book but loaded with errors
I really like Barron s review books because their philosophy is that they teach you the subject matter Princeton Review books on the other hand are about cracking the test and does offer good tips but if I were to get one book it d be Barron s because learning the subject is the surest way to getting a good score Having said that the book is LOADED with errors and for that I deduct 1 star anything from just typing the wrong character instead of to wrong answers wrong set ups decimal places in wrong place missing decimal places you get the idea It s as if the whole Chemical Equilibrium chapter was edited by someone who wanted to sabotage the student I am not kidding But the thing is if you reasonably know the concepts you d catch the mistakes because the mistakes are in the examples and not in the concept explanations Don t be scared away because of the typos but just know they are there In the final analysis it is still a valuable book to me and I like it despite its faults
>> Review material decent but with a plethora of errors
While it can be argued that this book does what it is intended to provide a review of chemistry as preparation for the AP it is difficult to justify several glaring issues with it
1 Mistakes in the book For a book coming from a company as well known as Barron s and for a test as widely taken as the AP Chemistry exam one would expect that this book would be well written and carefully checked over for errors Instead nearly every two or three pages there are errors that while not immediately noticeable can cause a good deal of confusion especially when they involve miscalculations in example problems or chapter exercises
2 Example problems Errors in the problems aside one would also expect that for a test that does not allow calculators the example problems in this book would be similar to those on the test that is they would be doable by hand Instead as other reviewers have pointed out the problems expect you to do such calculations as negative logs and exponents without a calculator which is totally unrealistic
3 Over preparation While I heartily agree that it is better to go into a test over prepared rather than under prepared Barron s takes it to an extreme Not only are there equations in the book that will almost certainly not be taught in an AP Chemistry course let alone appear on the AP test the level of detail the book goes into frequently ends up making the information cryptic and difficult to comprehend instead of lucid and clear Indeed the sheer length of the book is comparable to that of an AP Chemistry textbook which makes it less than ideal for simply reviewing material before the exam
Overall this book will prepare you for the AP test However you will in the process be confronted with a tidal wave of typos calculation errors poorly written questions and far more information and detail than is necessary I d expect better from Barron s
>> Disappointing
The review is good but the practice problems are faulty
For example already in Chapter 1 practice problem 8 and 12 have major mistakes In Problem 8 10 14 was written 1014 complicating the problem In Problem 12 the question refers to a concept discussed in chapter 2
I did not read further but if I was able to find 2 faulty problems in such close proximity in chapter 1 then there must be many many more
I would not buy this book I have seriously lost confidence in Barron s

Kaplan GRE Exam Subject Test Psychology 2009 2010 Edition Kaplan Gre Psychology
>> Decent
I bought this for my sister in law who at the time was a sophomore and who wanted a head start at studying for her GRE She gave great compliments to the information included as it helped solidify her desire to study psychology However this should not be used as your only resource for studying for the GRE As other reviewers have noted the book does contain some typos and formatting errors
>> Good Start but not Enough
This book is a good start for getting ready for the PSY GRE but it s not enough I used this book the Princeton Review book David Myer s Intro to Psy book as well as my other textbooks and of course the internet The best way to use this book is to a read the chapters so you re familiar with the basic concepts b look up names and studies that you re unfamiliar with on the internet c make flashcards of concepts and psychologists you think are important
The practice tests are not good predictors of the actual GRE but are more of a studying tool I scored in the low 700s on each of the practice tests but scored an 830 on the actual test so my scores in the Kaplan practice exams were at least 1 SD away from my score in the actual exam Still it was useful in that it showed me what my weaknesses were
Also if you re hard up for cash these books are usually at your local library and they don t change much if at all from year to year
>> This book was a very important part of my preparation
I am perfectly happy that I bought this book because it did exactly what I had hoped it would do help me score in the 99th percentile 830 on the psych GRE But it is not enough by itself If you rely on this book as your primary means of test preparation you probably won t get a stellar score
This book was only ONE PART of my overall preparation strategy More important to my preparation was reading a Psych 101 textbook Specifically I bought a cheap used copy of Gleitman s introductory psych book Psychology 6th Sixth Edition and read it section by section When I completed a section of the textbook e g Sensation and Perception I would go the Kaplan book and read the corresponding chapter there That way I covered the material twice After reading both the textbook and the Kaplan chapter I would then go to the website for the Gleitman textbook where you can find online quizzes and vocabulary reviews After taking the quizzes online I knew if there were any areas I didn t understand and/or needed to review further Fortunately there are lots of resources on the web for studying any areas you need to work on
And of course I made flashcards of vocabulary theories and important psychologists And I took practice tests And I re reviewed everything A lot Basically what I m saying is that it takes a good amount of time and effort The Kaplan review book isn t going to work miracles by itself
While the Kaplan review book was helpful in my preparation in my opinion it has two deficiencies 1 The methodology and statistics section of the book is not thorough enough Do what I did and go to internet to get bit more information on things like ANOVAs and factorial design 2 The practice tests are almost worthless They are incredibly poorly written as far as diagnostic tests go and in no way do they approximate the real Psych GRE tests I took the first one but I didn t bother with the second Do yourself a favor and find the real ones
It has been 10 years since I graduated with my bachelor s in psych so I had forgotten a fair amount of stuff Despite that using the Kaplan book as an important part of my preparation I managed to score very well on the test If you devote a few months to your preparation and take it seriously you should be able to do the same If you don t I m not sure how much this book is going to help you

The Mythical Man Month Essays on Software Engineering
>> Book Review Mythical Man Month
I was very disappointed with this Classic volume It doesn t seem to have aged very well
>> A solid book
The author really knows what he is talking about As a computer programmer I can tell that the author is speaking from experience And he makes his points clearly and thoroughly
>> Very good book ONLY if you re a software development project manager
Very good book that shows how elements of Project Management in a software development project aren t terribly different from how we manage software projects today The best part of this book is it s self review and today s thoughts and views at the end of the book

RHCE Red Hat Certified Engineer Linux Exam RH302
>> Helped my pass my RHCT
Highly recommend as a study aid I have always worked with Linux distros at home but my job recently required more from me in the area of Red Hat Enterprise Linux support I attended the RH 133 week long class While attending the class I was also reading this book It gave me a different angle to the material that the instructor covered and really think that it helped give me the extra push to get my RHCT I would not say that this book alone would have caused me to pass the exam but it really helped augment the instructor based class It is also been a great reference guide in going forward in my new duties with managing RHEL systems around the office
>> Excellent book a bit out of date
I used this book to study for my RHCE Exam in December of 2009 From what I have heard from this book and my personal experience it is THE book to use for studying for the RHCE exam besides the material provided in the 300 course The labs in the book were quite good but I found that I had to do some extra steps to get my system to a point where I could execute the lab well Figuring out how to get my system to that point were very good learning experiences but they made me skim through labs since I didn t want to bother with the setup It would have been very nice if they provided a pre configured vm image of a similar release like CentOS that was preconfigured so that when you hit a lab you had all of the necessary pieces or at least build on the pieces from the previous labs
NOTE I mentioned in my title that the book is a bit out of date From studying book I thought that I would have to configure a RHEL system from scratch do an install pick package groups pick partition sizes etc Red Hat eliminated the installation portion of the exam in 2008 or 2009 The exam is now only a 3 5 hour session consisting of RHCT troubleshooting and RHCE system configuration
>> Best practices and growing your career
I think everyone should be required to take pass the RHCE if you would in a
Enterprise environment or in a smaller company Understanding the fundamentals of
an Operating System to the complexity of services that can survive the public
Internet or Internal network is key to success
I learned a lot from digging in and I know when I set up servers for work they
are correct and done by the book not by some search off the Internet or by some
forum where people do things by the seat of the pants
This to me was an awesome achievement and milestone I knew after going through
all of the self sacrifice it allowed me to except new challenges

CompTIA Security Study Guide Exam SY0 201
>> Passed on First Try
After letting the book sit on my shelf and collect dust for about 4 months I finally broke it open and studied the material I read the entire book and pretty much skipped all the hands on exercises at the end of each chapter When I was done I reviewed the book material I had highlighted and did all the chapter and bonus exams included with the book I also used the flash cards and to the point that I had the flash cards and exams memorized After using all this material I passed the exam with an 855 I know not the perfect 900 but Ill live with it
The deluxe book has two additional bonus test exams and I was able to use those as well a friend of mine had that book If you want to spend a bit more for the additional exams its good to go with the deluxe book If not this book has enough material to pass the exam and move on to the next one
>> Comptia Security Study guide
This book satisfies my curiosity first of all it came promptly from Amazon and it was the exact book i paid for
The content is well explicit i have been buying sybex book overtime so i have come to appreciate the anticipated mind concerning the needs and requirement of self paced reader such as me
The topics guides to passing the exam easily If i have the opportunity again i will buy such book
Thanks
>> Book no where near enough to pass the current exam
This book needs an update badly I took the most current version of the exam and this book by itself was no where near thorough enough to pass it I was able to pass ONLY because I have been in the industry and have hands on knowledge of the topics covered This book itself was no help at all honestly because most of the questions on the exam were VERY detail oriented and this book is more of a high level overview for beginners I would honestly recommend reading the exam topics in the CISSP exam guide to understand each topic for instance cryptography and virtualization which by the way is barely mentioned in this book and I had at least 10 detailed questions on it in detail in order to pass the exam I give the book 2 stars only because it is great for beginners looking to get into the security field just no where near enough to pass the exam at least not the one I took

USMLE Step 2 Secrets
>> Short to the point
This is a must for anyone who s studying for USMLE Step 2 but does not have the time nor want to spend time reading extensive amounts of review materials However you MUST do a lot of questions if you only plan to use this book to review as it is way too concise to be your sole source of study materials
>> great book for a quick review use other sources too
This book was great I scored in the 99th percentile by skimming this book twice USMLE world and a quick read through First Aid for Step 2 CK for basic information and understanding My advice would be to read through Secrets as you take USMLE world and take notes in the book some of the info is out of date but you can update as you go Studied about 3 1/2 weeks with only these 3 sources
>> I got 99 after reading this book
I read this book twice and got 99 It was able to discuss the most common diseases tackled in the USMLE step 2 ck as well as the not so common conditions that the examiners ask in the exam It is very readable concise and complete in coverage with special emphasis in the most commonly encountered questions in the exams The book is question based like the other specialty secret books I highly recommend this book

>> It s what got me a 5
This book I swear has most definitely earned me a 5 on the 2009 APUSH test
I personally was probably one of the hardest studiers in my APUSH class ours wasn t taught well at all and thus I developed my own way of taking notes and such Turns out I never looked at those notes again seeing as I m one of those types of people that outline EVERYTHING
Quite frankly I m bad at shortening stuff however this is where this book came into play Two weeks before the APUSH test I bought this book for 12 bucks and read it through twice From there I studied parts I needed to know most It s lightweight and summarized EVERYTHING into 3 5 facts for every important era/event you need to know It tells you what you NEED to study and what you do not via little side bubbles of notes
My recommendation read your APUSH textbook first as to so you can get a general consensus of American history from the beginning to the 1970s you won t need to know anything past that and THEN buy this book From there start nitpicking the things you know well and the things you don t know and try to memorize the things you do not
This book will really teach you what to study for your next upcoming APUSH test
I swear it s what got me a 5
>> Very Helpful
This year I took the test and I got a 4 I credit some of my success to this book Simply this book summarizes everything important you need to know to give you the best benefit to get a 5 Although by itself it probably is not enough for a 5 it does help alot in comprehension of alot of the important topics Surprisingly this year s test had a essay about labor groups and I wrote basically everything that was written in this crash course I recommend for those taking the test to supplement this with the bigger REA book with amsco That is a killer plan to getting a high score
>> Great AP History Review Book
Our AP History swears by this book in fact he bought one for every member of his AP History class Stay tuned I ll let you know how they do

The Well Educated Mind A Guide to the Classical Education You Never Had
>> A Glorified Self Help Book
The market segment for Susan Wise Bauer s The Well Educated Mind is clear it s a guidebook and cheat sheet for book club members primarily women And the book falls into the category of self improvement that middle aged women who think they re too educated for Oprah are so obsessed with nowadays
Borrowing from Hegel s thesis anti thesis synthesis argument Ms Bauer believes there are three main outcomes of reading first is the ability to understand the text second is the ability to criticize the text and third is the ability to formulate one s own viewpoint She explains how to read different genres and provides a cheat list of books to be read from these genres In this way her book is a cross between David Denby s Great Books which I also abhorred for its pretentious sophomoric induglences and Cole Notes
There is nothing original nor interesting in this glorified self help book
>> Very annoyed by section 2
Section one of this book was fine maybe even very good I took notes and adopted some of her tips on reading critically However Section 2 seriously ticked me off If I am reading a book for the first time I want o experience it for myself Sure I want to know generally what it is about and if other people enjoyed it or not I frequently read Amazon reviews prior to making a purchase but I don t want to be told explicitly what happens and how to feel about it I cant imagine not experiencing for myself the source of Pips inheritance in Great Expectation or what the impediment to Jane s marriage to Rochester might be etc The author of this book retells the entire plot of all the books which she describes and spoils everyone of them Why Why
There are so many wonderful books about books out there which don t do that Beowulf on the Beach for example is fantastic Jack Murnaghan writes lovingly about many classic works but his essays succeed in making me want to know more about each book instead of thinking why bother if I already know everything that happens
SPOILER ALERT
I am reminded of how cross I was when my husband innocently asked me If Uncle Tom had been beaten to death yet while I was reading Uncle Tom s Cabin for the first time His response was but everyone knows that Obviously not EVERYONE Maybe that is Ms Wise Bauers attitude also Maybe she sees these books as works to be studied and not read for the sheer pleasure of it Either way what she has succeeded in producing in section 2 is a collection of crib notes which would enable anyone to discuss a book which they have not read as if they had Shame
>> Behold The Trivium
I have been left with a great hunger in the wake of this book I also had a great hunger before I read this book but at least now I know what I am going to order
I used to think my education was pretty good I got A in every exam I ever took and came away with the Holy Trinity which encompasses all knowledge which actually deserves the name Physics Chemistry and Mathematics How s that for a well rounded personality eh Shove yer poetry up yer Messalonghi Mr Byron
This comfortable world of hard chromed self congratulation has obviously taken a series of knocks over the years but the big bombshell was probably reading Pirsig s Zen books in my early twenties That awakened a quest to master philosophy which has led me along many and branching paths At some stage I realised that I had not in fact had an education as such No fault of my teachers who read me Gerard Manley Hopkins in awed tones and got called rude names for their pains It was all my own ruthlessly rationalistic doing
Now I have come to look for this education by stages I came to read Wise Bauer s excellent synopsis It rests on the notion of the Trivium the three stage reading of any text taught to subjects of a liberal education regime to first consume then understand then place in context its content and meaning I cannot fault it nor can I fault Wise Bauer s advocacy of it
Very much of the book is taken up by synopses of the recommended texts Unlike some reviewers I take absolutely no issue with this Firstly these are a mini education in their own right Secondly they are written by someone who has all the benefits of the education I am looking for and if that is actually worth something then their advice is worth listening to These are the foundation stones of an encompassing education When you have some mastery of a field you can pick out your own stone to fashion cornices and the odd gargoyle but when you are laying the foundations for your very first house it doesn t hurt to take the advice of a builder So I ll make my own choices as to what I read of philosophy but where literature is concerned I shall be starting with Don Quixote
The book covers preparation basically expounding the Trivium and good reading and note taking habits It then fleshes out the content of the education your are about to give yourself with sections on the Novel Autobiography History writing Drama and Poetry Each of these sections contains a list of synopses of the key works I imagine that a knowledgeable reader would take issue with the precise selection but I would urge the self educator to give them a chance Wise Bauer has the education and you if it s what you came here looking for presumably do not Teachers disagree among themselves but it is not in the spirit of acquiring a classical education for the pupils to do so They would in any case only get caned

This is the only book with real tests My only gripe is that each subject only gets one test It would be nice to have more real practice
>> The book is just as horrific as the test
From a student s perspective the book isn t very helpful Most people use it to review right before taking the test to get a general feel for how they would do If your looking for a book that will help you review material this isn t it it s just two tests that are honestly not anything like the real thing If you want my advice stay away from the U S Subject test altogether it s awful

Practice Makes Perfect Spanish Pronouns And Prepositions
>> Information that you won t necessarily find in a textbook
I had studied Spanish for 8 years in school and I never bothered much with learning prepositions or pronouns such little words what s the point in obsessing over them
After having left school I started working for a company with a high number of Spanish speakers When I would try to converse with my co workers I found myself getting tripped up on simple words I knew what I wanted to say I knew the nouns adjectives and verbs but I just couldn t connect them all together to make a coherent sentence It was really embarrassing because they are such basic words Maybe my co workers could still understand what I was saying but I just did not feel comfortable with knowing that I was sounding like Tarzan
This book was exactly what I needed It hones in on very specific types of pronouns and prepositions from the most basic subject pronouns to the more advanced use of cuyo lo que RID formula passive voice etc to the downright tricky for English speakers para vs por
After having gone through this book I was surprised to have learned so much valuable information though I was also slightly embarrassed because I realized just how many mistakes I had been making when I conversed with fluent speakers But I realize that that is part of speaking another language and trying to become bilingual you have to make mistakes in order to learn Sometimes the little things really do matter As the writer explains in the book unlike with nouns adjectives and verbs there really is no way to get around expressing most pronouns and prepositions Substitutes just don t work You have to know them and how to use them in sentences
I would definitely recommend this book for intermediate students or for more advanced students to use as a review This book is probably not the best choice for beginners you would definitely have to use a dictionary for all the exercises but since the information is so valuable I would recommend it for future use and reference
>> Helpful practice
The book is really great for when you need a lot of extra practice and whatnot Definitely worth it
>> GREAT BOOK
BUY THIS BOOK ALONG WITH ITS COMPANION ON VERBS AND LEARN ALOT FOR A SMALL PRICE
HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT

The Nuts and Bolts of College Writing
>> Good overall book on college writing
Well I would give the book 5 stars but I thought it lacked a bit in advice for content It had a lot of info regarding formatting punctuation etc But not as much as I would have liked on writing a good introduction conclusion thesis etc
Still a great book I definitely recommend it
>> Well worth reading
This was required reading for a college course However I was very pleasantly surprised on the concise straightforward manner in which Michael Harvey wrote the book He covers a variety of topics that will lead to an increase in writing quality It was my one point of enjoyment in my reading assignment for the week
>> not high school friendly
I was very disappointed in this product after purchasing it for my 11th grader The book is an ode to the authors intelligence lots and lots of unnecessary explanations that serve no purpose When I attempted to incorporate it into my family s home study regiment I became frustrated with the book Yes I am college educated and degreed This book needs to lure the student in rather than repel them

Spark Notes The Stranger
>> Quick And Powerful
At 120 pages The Stranger is a very quick read and contains much more than initially appears under its surface It s also a wonderful turn of prose when you realize that Meursault is not just aloof but an absolute sociopath Definitely a book that I need to read again to delve even deeper into it s themes of apathetic absurdism
>> Boring and Absurd
According to one reviewer Patricia Highsmith s The Tremor of Forgery has undertones of Albert Camus The Stranger While there is a resemblance between both books The Tremor of Forgery addresses existentialist issues that The Stranger barely addresses just in the last chapter of part II
The Stranger is divided into two parts
Part I is simply boring Meursault s life from the moment his mother dies until he murders an Arab is described with no insight whatsoever as to why he is so emotionally detached and innately passive about the world around him He s just like that and that s it Going to bed with Marie seems to be the only thing that keeps him interested
Part II is simply absurd The Prosecutor focuses more on Meursault s callousness than on the murder itself to prove his point in a rather forced way The novel gets a bit interesting in its last chapter but by the time I got to those last 10 pages I couldn t help trying to figure out what the point in the previous 135 pages was
This review is based on Stuart Gilbert s translation
>> The Stranger book review by high school student
The Stranger by Albert Camus a winner of Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957 Originally written in French and published in 1942 Although it was then translated by Matthew Ward and was published in 1988 I describe this book as philosophical crime fiction in that it makes you really think about what s happening Understanding it is difficult because of the actions that the characters take and which come off very mysterious With 123 pages no pictures except the ones you can imagine in your head
Three people that really stand out in the story are Meursault Raymond Sintes and Marie Cardona Meursault is a type of person who lives for the day and tries to make it as wonderful as possible Knowing him he doesn t worry about the future to much or think before he takes action As for Raymond he beats his mistress and her brother becomes a conflict Raymond is the cause of Meursault s downfall because he gives him the gun that later kills his mistress s brother Originally Raymond just wanted to use Meursault but in the end they ended up trusting each other which they both gained a friend Marie is in love with Meursault Inside she wants to marry him although he feels indifferent about it but that doesn t run her away She remains loyal to him even when he goes to court She is known as the mixed blessing in his life
The main problem of the story is a murder It starts out with Meursault receiving a telegram explaining that his mother has died He travels to Algiers to attend his mother s funeral but he doesn t remember much of it The day after the funeral he goes to the beach for a swim and runs into Marie Cardona a former co worker They make plans that evening to see a movie then they stay the night together when he awakes Marie is nowhere to be seen so he sits on his balcony and watches people go by The following day he returns to work on his way home to his apartment he runs into his neighbor Raymond he invites him in for dinner Over dinner Raymond brags about beating up his mistress because she cheated on him and he got in a fight with her brother He wants to torment her more but he needs Meursault to write her a letter telling her to come back so he agrees to do so Marie later comes and visits Meursault they hear shouting and the police show up and arrest Raymond for beating his mistress Raymond asks Meursault to testify on his behalf so he agrees to do so
Marie asks Meursault if he wants to marry her and he replies indifferently and says if you want to we can so they become engaged Bringing Raymond with them to a friends beach house where they run into the Arabs one of which is Raymond s mistress brother a fight breaks out and Raymond gets stabbed they leave to go treat it When returning to go find the Arabs again Raymond thinks about shooting them but Meursault stops him and takes the gun Meursault then returns to the spring to cool off when he shoots Raymond s mistress brother for no reason He s then arrested and thrown into jail Meursault is heartless He is asked to put his faith in God but refuses to do so Adapting to prison life pretty well he keeps his mind of the things he always had Usually by sleeping most of the day
Meursault is taken to court During the trial the subjects shifted from the murder to a discussion of his own character Many people were called upon to testify although they all attested to his lack of grief and tears Because of his lack of moral feeling threatens all of society the prosecutor calls him a monster Sentenced to death by beheading He is given one more chance to turn to god but gets angry and refuses to Believing he is right in living in a meaningless world For the first time Meursault truly embraces the idea that human existence holds no greater meaning Which he abandons all hope for the future and accepts the gentle indifference of the world This acceptance makes Meursault feel happy
As we look back on this book it didn t really have a great meaning to it Although it kind of did It s sad to think that many people in our world think this way Life is meaningless and they can just kill anyone who makes them upset but you can t do that We need to learn to tolerate people you can be sad or mad but you just can t take it out on people who have done nothing to you for no reason Honestly I wouldn t recommend this book to teenagers because they could think wrong about it Besides that I think it is a good book that you really have to think about and understand the concepts
