Barron s Military Flight Aptitude Tests
>> Barrons Military Flight Aptitude Flop
I can only speak for the AFAST Barron did a horrible job with the Cyclic Orientation It s more than obvious that who ever created this portion of the practice test hasn t the slightest idea of what it is like in a cockpit For instance Question 96 on AFAST 1 shows a horizon tilting to the left the right side of the horizon drops while the left side rises This is clearly a left bank indicating the cyclic is being applied to the left Also the horizon is getting lower indicating nose up So the conclusion is aft left But no the dyslexic SOB that wrote the book states the correct answer is forward right Most of the other answers are just as bad 95 of AFAST 1 shows the horizon rising and just barely i mean barely tilting to the right They state Forward right for the answer anyone with stick time knows that a applying the cyclic that far to the right is going to send the helicopter into a far greater bank than what is shown Question 100 clearly a hard left they state aft right Yes i do fly helicopters yes i can recognize the maneuvers and yes I am trying to apply for the extremely competetive position of Army Aviator So yes this pisses me off Barron if people are going to PAY you to make a book to help them prepare for a test THEN GET IT RIGHT Don t prepare yourself to fail with this book
Don t waste your money
Peterson s master the military flight aptitude is better

>> Very helpful despite poor composition and many errors
I am reviewing this book with respect to the AFOQT which I recently took and achieved a near perfect score 99 highest possible in Pilot Navigator Technical Academic Aptitude and Quantitative and 95 in Verbal I credit this book in large part for my score being that high Although obviously not everyone will score that high just because they studied this book I ve always been a good student and test taker
I want to stress right now before I rip the book to shreds that I found it very helpful in preparing for the AFOQT I managed to complete every subtest which I m told is very rare I definitely would not have accomplished this without having taken practice exams first Two AFOQT practice tests are in this book I recommend this book to those who are studying for the exam but with some significant caveats So with that said I must be bluntly honest about the contents of the book itself
SHORTCOMINGS
1 The book is fairly poorly put together For example I didn t even read Chapter 2 pp 19 68 because it s fifty pages of irrelevant information specification tables and associated descriptions of aircraft after aircraft currently in use by the US military weight dimensions payload range manufacturer etc Who cares The book s declared purpose is to help people prepare for the military standardized exams and that s why I bought it But those tests do not cover this information So while this chapter may be interesting it is completely useless for studying for these exams and it should be omitted It is a waste of time and it fills nearly one quarter of the text proper The non practice test portion ends on page 228
2 The book contains many errors even within the practice tests/answers at least for the AFOQT which were the only two I took This didn t bother me much because I d read this about the book before buying it and I d decided to turn it into a challenge to identify such errors you know you understand the material when you can do so You shouldn t ever just memorize what you read in school or in this book always seek to understand A simple example the diagram at the top of page 162 is just flat out wrong It depicts the three axes of motion for an aircraft but all labels associated with the lateral and longitudinal axes are swapped Search Google Images for precisely airplane axes aviatorthings for a very similar but correct diagram See the difference
3 One study area I specifically found to be lacking in this book was a section on basic aviation systems and protocols It wouldn t need to be exhaustive but a little coverage of some ubiquitous systems would be helpful For example a brief description of VOR What do taxiway or runway lights do e g for glide slope on landing Or plane lights What colors are all of these and what do they mean Are they solid or flashing etc I found a few of these sorts of questions did actually show up on both the practice and real exams There were only a few but it s enough to justify at least a short section covering them Omit Chapter 2 add a sub section or two containing this information under Aviation Information in Chapter 7
OTHER COMMENTS
I did not read Chapter 6 Mathematics Review Information although I did quickly flip through it This is because my formal training is as an engineer and this level of mathematics was surpassed long ago It appears to me that the section should be sufficient review for the test although I d definitely recommend that people practice the really basic stuff to attain speed and accuracy In other words practice your multiplication and long division skills on paper because they re major time consumers on the exam and they crop up a lot And learn to estimate if your answers make sense
Also I read much of Chapter 5 Language Review Information but not all of it Specifically I did not read through the full listing of definitions for the nouns verbs and adjectives I have a decent vocabulary and most of the words were already familiar to me This section might be useful to some but I find that word knowledge and understanding comes more with use than just with a reading of a definition though that is important as well Personally I found the information earlier in the chapter to be more helpful but I can understand why the vocabulary lists are included
SUMMARY
The book itself is only mediocre But the practice tests are invaluable If you buy this book TAKE THOSE TESTS And do so in as close to real test conditions as possible They more than make up for other short comings errors and all Also skip Chapter 2 since it s simply a waste of time instead do a little outside reading on common aviation systems e g VOR compasses meanings of light colors flashing/solid on planes/runways/whatever etc You don t need to get into extreme nitty gritty details but look at the basics of the common systems Above all take those tests and apply what you learn Time constraints are MAJOR factors in taking the AFOQT
Read my two comments below if you want to see how I compare the book s practice tests to the real test in terms of difficulty and also if you want to see a listing of the errors I identified in the two practice tests I felt that including them in the review itself while still relevant would make it far too long
>> Bad for AFAST
For the AFAST section there were several mistakes in the Barron s book in the test portion almost to point it was misleading me The only thing the book really helped me with was Complex Movements Everything else Mechanical Cyclic Orientation Helicopter Knowledge was just wrong If you are going to take the AFAST buy another book

>> Very Confusing Poor Support
The first issue is that when we purchased this product we were sent an illegal copy from a third party Amazon has since discontinued using that vendor an given us a 10 credit because we waited too long to call them however in calling KAPLAN they stated they do not sell any authorized copies of this book through Amazon We then tried to use KAPLAN technical support When you call the technical support number you get a nine level telephone tree which is difficult for adults to understand let alone students But to make it even more amusing technical support is not one of the choices You have to fool the system to get a person then convince that person to get you to technical support which they swear is not available through them or just through email then wait 10 minutes for a person who really can t help so they pass you another person When you give up and send an email the site does not confirm you have sent an email so you have no idea if your message has been sent For a company which purports to help students their website and processes are awful
The book is OK but the process to use it is very painful
>> Son loved using this study book
My son used this to study and for the practice tests He felt it was laid out in a fashion that kept him interested He also like the hints the book provides He did 3 of the practice tests and left 3 for the next time he takes it
>> online system is difficult to navigate
It took over an hour to find the quiz and everthing advertised It may be a great product but not very user friendly at first

33 Questions About American History You re Not Supposed to Ask
>> This book has good information
This book points out question about American History that is being changed from what I learned in school Very good reading Take your time reading and become a student again
>> 33 Questions About American History You re Not Supposed to Ask by Thomas E Woods Jr
If you think that white rich people are always right and we should always blame someone else for their mistakes this book is for you
I purchase this book after seeing on youtube Mr Woods very convincing speech about reasons of recent financial crisis so the first chapter I read from Mr Woods book was Did capitalism caused the great depression In 6 six pages Mr Woods proves that without any doubts the great depression what caused by government intervention Accidentally before reading Mr Woods book I finished reading J K Galbraith The great crash 1929 where he points to other reason for the Great Depression to my knowledge Mr Galbraith is much better economist then Mr Woods Tons of articles and books where written about The great Crash still the brightest economists have doubts but Mr Woods have no doubts his 6 pages answer all questions
Other chapters of Mr Woods books are the same it not Unions and organized labor created safe work environment decent salaries or 8 hours/day workday it was an action of white rich people
Did Iroquois Indians influence the US constitutions Of course not how can colored people influence white rich people Even if Franklin points to Iroquois example even if Iroquois leader where invited to colonists conferences where they explained the nature of Iroquois treaty it is simple impossible that colored people influenced white rich people
In my opinion the book is waste of time and waste of money
>> debunking US History 101
Woods has written a fascinating and somewhat controversial book on fallacies that are usually taken up as fact by the majority of people There are many subjects which are talked about some of which are Bill Clinton Booker T Washington The Great Depression The civil war MLK The civil rights movement The Wild west and many others Its a great short book to read and you will be feeling like you have been lied to by your previous history teachers after you have completed this text

The College Solution A Guide for Everyone Looking for the Right School at the Right Price
>> Worthwhile read
As a parent of a high school senior I have read many college admission advice books over the past two years I found this book The College Solution to be different than most of the others and I highly recommend it While many of the other books focus on theories and tricks to gaining admission I feel this book offers very practical advice and suggests specific actions It mentions many helpful websites that are beneficial in researching colleges The title of this book might make you think the book is all about financing college It certainly covers that but it is much more This is a very useful practical book Reasonably priced and worth it I had originally borrowed it from the local library after reading it I purchased my own copy so I can refer back to it periodically
>> Positioning Yourself for College
I am a career coach for students and young people seeking admission to college graduate schools and the workforce My practice focuses on students learning how to optimally position themselves I ask the question What unique strengths do you have to offer that this college needs
Lynn O Shaughnessy has taken this question to a new level I help my students understand that a key to college acceptance is communication of how their unique strengths can fill a school s gaps i e academic talent diversity athletic or artistic abilities This book adds the financial element to that equation A student s ability to fill a college s gaps not only drives acceptance but influences a college s financial generosity as well This is a simple intuitive concept that not many families recognize
As families push their high schoolers to stretch themselves to apply to prestigious reach colleges they are overlooking great educational opportunities If you get into Ivy U by the skin of your teeth and you feel like they are almost doing you a favor by letting you squeak in you are unlikely to get any financial incentives for going there But if you are bringing something special to Under Ivy U and they really want you for the contributions you can make i e freshman stats sports arts academic potential they might feel a little more like you are doing them a favor and they ll be willing to offer you a financial incentive to do so
Simple isn t it Thank you Ms O Shaughnessy for pointing out such a clear and brilliant principle I suggest your book to all my students and will continue to do so

>> kinda whiney
The book has a lot of good information but the author spends several chapters whining about her personal view that too much grant money goes to merit awards i e where the student has worked hard to get good grades do well in athletics etc and is rewarded for his/her hard work with grant money and not enough to need based awards like every kid should get a free ride to the most expensive schools or something The author should just stick to facts figures and helpful websites

How to Make Colleges Want You Insider Secrets for Tipping the Admissions Odds in Your Favor
>> Excellent Resource Great Advice and Entertaining
The book cover is colorful and has illustrations inside and it is not very imposing in terms of size thus making it more likely that high school students will read it From the start the author gives proof that he is not a super student as his GPA is below average and his SAT is little above average rounding out to an approximate average student he also mentions later that he got accepted to Northwestern and the University of Chicago This is the exact type of student that would be most likely to read this book
The first section Understanding Admission is short funny and interesting In fact it quickly lays out how the admissions process works in terms of how do you decide if you have a good chance of getting into a University Another interesting point that he makes clear is that colleges are looking to create a diverse body of students not only those who can perform academically He then points out that students should make decisions not only based on the rating of a university but based on the university s fit for them Unfortunately he does not go into depth to delineate the different types of Universities and what may best fit different types of students
The second section Understanding the gatekeeper is not interesting or as humorous as the previous section as it seems disengaged from the Mike Moyers life and story in which the previous section was connected But this section does shed much light on how others can help students gain admittance into college He also gives an insiders view of the price and cost of each scholarship that colleges extend to students I feel that the most important part of this section is the realization of the role of the dean of admissions and how important that position is in striking an equilibrium between the various possible groups of students he could have on campus Other interesting points were the fact that parents should ensure they are not nagging the dean of admissions and that students should take advantage of the high school counselors but not fully depend on them
The Third section The best section that is available the core of the book lies in this chapter A teenager that read only the third section would have an excellent chance of succeeding in getting into the college of his or her choice He explains the difference between teenager and non teenager activities and distinguished this difference by using a story He also makes recommendations as the sort of activities that would qualify as NTA s to give students an example of activities that they should start to engage in
The Fourth and the Fifth section The fourth section is the most original section in the book and is indeed a smart way of increasing one odds of getting into a college This strategy works by applying outside of your zone or geographic areas thus making you more unique since less students similar to you would be found in that area This is a way of competing without having to break a sweat but he does not give the very important warning that although it may be a successful strategy it can have important ramifications For example a student may find him/herself so out of his/her zone that you may not know how to cope in such an environment where there is a drastic weather changes or an entirely different culture
The fifth section focuses on finding the nerve of the institution that you are applying for This is an interesting concept as he encourages the student to do more research to find at the core what the institution is about and focuses on hitting that point It s not a new concept but he provides great questions to help students to dig deep to find out the heart of the institution that they are trying to get in
Sections 6 7 8 Make interesting points that some students would not think about on their own such as coaching their reference how to respond when they are called upon Although this is a good suggestion many high school teens will not take this advice very seriously His stuffing the ballot box idea is also very interesting and helps to distinguish the students from others since impartial parties are calling on that students behalf He counsel that students should never give up is well taken as he points out that students have nothing to lose in breaking the rules re applying again if have already been rejected He further instructs students to analyze their grade patterns and have an adequate story to explain any negative fluctuations
Section 9 and MY Conclusion Chapter 9 wraps things up and summarizes that good students can get rejected and getting accepted does not mean that you have to attend Although these chapters add interesting dimensions to this book I feel that it was too late in the book to adequately develop the themes since the book is about getting into college not necessarily how to choose the best college out of many I feel that a good conclusion to the book was missing as there was no summation of the main points discussed But overall I feel that the book is great 8/10 and would recommend it to any student interested in making colleges want them

Whether you are a freshman or a senior in high school this book is an eye opener for you Mike Moyer tells you the way to dramatically increase your chances of getting into the college of your choice In How to Make Colleges Want You he provides fresh approaches to getting your college application out of the maybe or no stacks to the yes we want you stack The book also contains references to Mike s website http //www collegepeas com where additional information and additions to the chapters are contained
Mike tells you what he did to get accepted to the college of his choice by describing his unusual activity of raising homing pigeons while in high school He took a homing pigeon to his first interview with the admissions counselor and sent a message to himself from the counselor This NTA non teenage activity got him recognized as special
Getting into a competitive college requires a lot more than grades or regular school activities it is a question of planning Moyer makes suggestions to accomplish the goal of getting into a prestigious college with his inside secrets A few are attending a community college for a year or two to obtain better grades transfer in to fill one of the vacancies left by someone who has moved on and start in mid year instead of competing with the freshman entry class
Consider there are 43 000 high schools and an equal number of valedictorians who apply to highly competitive colleges Their applications are your competition for admission to these colleges and even with good grades you still are not in their strata The techniques in this book are designed to raise your chances for admission by 10 to 20 per cent When you apply Mike s ideas during your high school years the odds are even better
Mike Moyer is unique as he not only provides this fairly inexpensive blue print for success he lectures at high schools giving students a great heads up on obtaining admission to choice schools He has a highly informative lecture on CD

Cheapest price for Applied Longitudinal Data Analysis Modeling Change and Event Occurrence is the best
Author : Judith D Singer

Publisher : Oxford University Press USA
Publication Date : 2003 03 27
Applied Longitudinal Data Analysis Modeling Change and Event Occurrence
>> Good Book
I like this book specially because it gives good explanations for people that are not very familiar with mathematical statistics Sometimes formula derivations are needed and the book just skips them because the author says they are far from the book s scope
>> Very thorough
This book is very complex which may scare some people off However the information is incredible and very in depth I think the strength of this book lies in its concrete examples of different sets of longitudinal data The authors slowly take you through each step and you eventually come to anticipate which step they are going to take next The in depth discussion of the multilevel model of longitudinal data is a necessity for anyone who wants to fully grasp the nature of their data For anyone interested in conducting longitudinal data this book is worthwhile
>> Good reference to have
Brought it for a multi level modeling course Great reference to have Everyone uses it and it s a must for any grad student

On Writing the College Application Essay The Key to Acceptance and the College of your Choice
>> AMAZING
This book is great It gives you amazing advice and gives a lot of examples so by the end you can pretty much identify what works and what doesn t The author even achieves not boring you throughout the entire novel which is a plus He included great tips on beginnings and endings which in my opinion are the most important parts There s also tips on how to improve and edit your essays as well as which types of essays to avoid so that you don t bore your reader You definitely will not regret buying this book Even if you don t need it for college admission essay writing you should buy it because it is a great book for essay writing in general
>> The best aid available
I got this book along with several other guides on applying to college The first 50 pages of this book provide more useful information than the phonebook sized guides that are sold everywhere The insider information on how your application will be processed and what will make it stand out is golden The author outlines several mistakes that I would think almost everyone is at least tempted to make trying to sell yourself in the essay He also captures that random nature of college acceptance without making you feel hopeless The book is also a good primer on writing interesting and entertaining pieces especially useful for the student that is not strong in this area This book is the best money you will spend on your college application
>> Fantastic
What a great guide to essay writing It helps all kinds of writing definitely a winner

What Smart Students Know Maximum Grades Optimum Learning Minimum Time
>> Too Much
If you are someone who needs to learn to study you should know how to read dry material before starting this book
>> Good points and suggestions not enough time to apply them in real life
My title of this review says it all He makes some really good points and helpful suggestions His twelve step can be helpful only in the perfect World Unfortunately we don t live in the perfect World as we don t have enough time to apply all of his concepts It would probably take less time to read the assigned chapters rather than to follow his 12 steps I do get what he says He says to weed out the unimportant information and only to concentrate on the useful information The only advice I will adopt are to pay attention to headings titles anything in bold first and last paragraph of each chapter questions by the author graphs illustrations summaries and such I m only going to focus on what is important to me by skimming rather than reading every little word That s the only advice I am able to take from this book I don t have the time or the energy to be so interractive as he suggests Instead what I find useful in studying is finding sample tests I can take on a subject rather than coming up with my own questions and such It s easier to study from sample tests and basically sample test cover the most useful information I also find his lecture note taking tips useful In other words just read the book but only apply the concepts you re comfortable with and use the information that you re able to use into your studying skills
>> Excellent for Adult Students
This book along with How to Become a Straight A Student are the two most helpful books especially for a the adult student returning back to college
Getting these two books will prepare you for getting back to school from the work world As a returning student at 50 years of age I found this book filled with excellent ways of thinking and preparing for the world of academia
This books covers the reality of Formal Education and what you need to know and how it differs from the REAL WORLD of working and learning in the workplace
Must have book for adult students who are returning to college

Kaplan SAT Score Raising Dictionary A Fun and Effective Way to Learn 2 000 of the Most Frequently Tested SAT Words
>> It s OK
The book contains a large volume of words however I do not have information on the applicability of these words to the SAT The format is acceptable but not effective enough to enable digestion or ownership of the new words nor interesting enough to generate enthusiasm to learn more words The user must rely on his/her own initiative or persistence to peruse the book
>> Interesting and instructional at the same time
Probably the primary reason that something is easy to learn is because it s interesting Spelling and vocabulary building are usually not among those that arouse interest however this book makes these topics interesting for the student by creating amusing word use sentences that involve teen think My daughter really likes using it for her weekly homeschooled vocabulary lessons
>> Kaplan SAT Score Raising Dictionary
The best way to learn vocabulary is through reading There comes a point
in studying for the SAT wherein a volume like this one would be helpful
This text has typical words and their usage set forth in an easy to read
format It s important to have comprehensive definitions and sentences
because memorizing vocabulary for the SAT exam would be pointless
Sample words are
o abrasive
o accentuate
o alacrity
o ascetic
o benign
o cacophony
o cadence etc
This dictionary would be invaluable in order to assist in mastering
the diction requisite for success on this exam

>> Excellent supplement for the class
I am currently using this book and I firmly believe that it is one of the best supplements to this class I don t know how I would survive in this class without it
>> Great for review and fundmentals
This text provides a sound foundation for students beginning the study of Criminal Law While many of the Criminal Law courses for undergraduates are narrowed down versions of the original cases this text provides students with the ability to read cases from the original source This merges the law along with the social expectations held for law and resulting policies I use this text to encourage a critical analysis of law and all the actors who impact upon our Nation of Laws I highly suggest the use of Law and Society by Vago as a companion text
>> great deal and quick ship
thanks for a great deal this was less than 1/3 of the retail price it said it was in good condition but actually appeared brand new

Resumes for Dummies
>> Good old library book
I like the book it s helpful in many ways I particularly like the lists of useful action words and the examples of resumes and cover letters That s why I bought it It goes a little deep into the internet part of job searches but perhaps thats useful for some people
>> For Smart Folks Too
This book offers an excellent overview on what it takes to get a resume together and prep for an interview And it s not just for newbies either
Joyce Lain Kennedy and her team provide everything from resume formats and layouts to samples for several popular jobs Included are URLs for corporate sites that practice good online staffing pages how to write tight objectives and summaries a collection of gotta have wow words eye catching keywords that sharpen a resume suggestions on how to say it with numbers percentages and even dollar amounts and perhaps the best part a must have 10 Point Resume Checklist
I m in the editing business and found this book a valuable addition to my library And you can t beat the price on Amazon
>> Same Old Kindle Problems Graphics Tables and Formatting
Don t get me wrong this could be a great book and probably is in hard copy i love my Kindle but looking at washed out graphics of guess what resumes on a gray background is more than disappointing It makes no sense when you can t read what is on the page I just can t understand why a book on style and polish of maybe the most important document has such a poor layout with respect to tables lists and graphics Come on Amazon you need to get this right With 16 shades of grey/black why not pick one where you can pull the text of the graphics out of the picture There is nothing more annoying than reading two pages describing a great idea referring to an example and having to imagine what it was you were supposed to see
Come on Amazon try reading the books you sell
Get the more expensive hard copy of this book because this edition is almost unuseable

Up Your Score The Underground Guide to the SAT 2009 2010 Edition
>> Written by kids and it shows
I ve been teaching the SAT for one of the major international companies for 6 years and also have my private tutoring business I already had quite a lot of SAT books of various quality and decided to try this one
Sadly I discovered it to be pretty much a waste of money The advice given is often silly obvious tips written in a supposedly humorous style that became very wearing after the first few pages The sample questions provided are of the too simple not likely to see this in the real SAT type or not representative
There are a lot better books than this one out there Start with the official guide and use it for all practice questions If you need more tuition then try Kaplan for a general course or for math I like the McGraw Hill textbook
>> His Favorite
For our son He enjoyed reading it He felt it was written by and for students
>> This book was awesome
I used the 1999 version of this book back when I took the SAT test I suppose I should be reviewing that version but I am going to review this one instead so people who are considering buying it know what a valuable tool it is A combination of my shoddy high school and my lack of effort made me ill prepared for the SAT I spent about two months using this guide and did much better than most of my peers This is just from going over the vocabulary and English portion I didn t even read the math portion If I had done so I probably would have done even better The book is entertaining and contained some very useful strategies for memorizing boring things I recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about taking the SAT test

Alice Walker s the Color Purple Bloom s Modern Critical Interpretations
>> This musical tie in edition apparently not available
Service and shipping were perfect no problems whatsoever My only concern is that I specifically ordered copied of this Musical Tie In edition of the novel for a project with a group of students who will be seeing the musical and that is not what I received all copies were of the new and more generic cover However the content of the writing is actually the most important thing and I needed these copies right away to distribute to students so there was no time to contact the seller to address the issue I do however think it would be better truth in advertising to not advertise the musical tie in version if it is not available
>> Never received it
I ordered this book three times and according to the picture on this website I never got this book I received three of the same book which looks nothing like this one so I m not convinced that my son got the right book for school this is very disappointing
>> 5 scenes too late
Everything seemed okay but when we went to watch it and tried over and over again the movie skips the beginning scenes of the movie I was very disappointed at a product that was supposed to be in new condition The DVD is useless

The Ordinary Parent s Guide to Teaching Reading
>> great teaching tool
I m the type of person who needs everything spelled out for me Teaching does NOT come natural for me so I love that this book tells me exactly what to say I love how simple and straight forward and SHORT the lessons are I used this for my first son didn t have time to complete it before he started school and with homework and other responsibilities I haven t had time to start again with him I am however using it for my other son not in kindergarten yet and he is reading now Not fluently but he can sound out and decifer phonetic words I love the structure but realize one reading/teaching source isn t the right answer for every child I have had friends recommend this book as well as teaching your child to read in 100 easy lessons I think that s the title who have LOVED both I think my first son would have done better with the 100 easy lessons but my second is really responding to this style I DO recommend this book but definitely know your child and thoroughly research before you buy anything
>> More for parents than for kids
I ordered this book because I have been using the other language arts series First Language Lessons Writing With Ease by Peace Hill Press and have had good success with them While I used 100 Easy Lessons with my first son and it worked well i wondered if this book would make it easier to transition from the phonics alphabet to the regular alphabet while teaching my second son
The first part of this book which teaches the vowel sounds and the consonant sounds is okay My son learned those sounds easily and enjoyed memorizing the little songs But then the book switches to reading words and short sentences and he was lost Partly this is because the typeface in the book is small Young children focus more easily on large words large letters and the sentences were too close together He had trouble focusing on each individual word without his eyes jumping to the sentence above Not enough space between sentences in other words
No pictures and the stories are not very interesting or engaging 100 Easy Lessons uses pictures to help children figure out the sequence of a story which is part of learning to read and logic
I think it is worth pointing out that while 100 Easy Lessons does not call for any props or need extra equipment this book has supplemental items such as a magnetic alphabet board a CD and instructor cards that are available on the publisher s website A good instructing book in my opinion doesn t need props I think the props appeal to modern parents who feel learning must be made into a game And of course they make more money for the publisher Not being cynical just realistic
After struggling with this book I got out 100 Easy Lessons and showed it to my son who is five and asked him which one he would rather us use for reading lessons He pointed to 100 Easy Lessons and said This one I can see the words better And no my son has no vision problems
So I think the Ordinary Parent s Guide might work for a very motivated reader but I still think 100 Easy Lessons is the golden granddaddy of reading instruction based on my admittedly limited experience
>> Surprisingly Easy
This book was surprising easy to use I started on Monday and told my husband Our child will be reading by Friday
I was wrong he was reading by Wednesday I was pleasantly surprised and excited at how easy it made it for me to teach him

500 Key Words for the SAT and How to Remember Them Forever
>> Pleased with purchase
I like the pictures They help my 8 year old to remember well I would recommend this item to young and old
>> Okay
This book is okay It does contain some flaws I think it would help me remember the words better if it had some visual aid I recommend using SAT Vocabulary Cartoons better Some of the ideas could have been made up easily by myself It tends to get a bit wordy sometimes Otherwise this book could be a little bit useful
>> Valuable vocabulary builder
As a high school teacher I return to this book year after year for my AP English Language and Composition class and Honors English 11 classes It familiarizes students with words they read in literature as well as offers definitions they will encounter on college entrance exams The tips for remembering meaning are entertaining and effective My students always enjoy the book

>> Amazon Sucks
Shopping on Amazon sucks One of my friend told if you purchased books you have the possibilty that you will not receive the stuff
My estimated delivery data is 26th Jan 2010 but I do not get my stuff then I emailed the customer service They used the official word told me to waite until 8th Feb 2010 Fine I waite guess what I will get tomorrow Will you tell me waite until Amazon bank go bankrupt I am glad to see
>> Simply the BEST GMAT Critical Reasoning Book available
I self studied and scored a 770 on the GMAT Here are my thoughts on PowerScore s Critical Reasoning Bible
OVERVIEW
The PowerScore GMAT Critical Reasoning Bible or the CR bible as you ll see it commonly referenced in online forums is published by the renowned LSAT prep gurus PowerScore The LSAT and the GMAT have two question types that are somewhat similar Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning known as Logical Reasoning in the LSAT This book comes in as an abridged form of the company s massively successful Logical Reasoning Bible This CR bible has a solid reputation as a comprehensive guide to one of the most puzzling question types on the GMAT
The CR bible covers the topic of GMAT Critical Reasoning with incredible depth and detail Questions are neatly organized according to families in order for the reader to understand the various logical connections between question types The book deals with ten types of Critical Reasoning questions all remarkably well analyzed in ten separate chapters The CR bible even addresses many rarely tested CR question types although I would love to see a separate chapter for boldface critical reasoning questions in a future edition boldface critical reasoning questions are considered among the toughest question tested on the GMAT One could argue that this book will also help in case you re having trouble with Reading Comprehension I personally found the Main Point chapter particularly enlightening and relevant to reading comprehension
PROS
Detailed analysis of Critical Reasoning question types means that you will have a quick reference guide at hand should you ever feel the need to review for one topic or the other
Practice questions although few are the closest I ve ever seen to actual GMAT questions in terms of style Explanations are also top notch with great analysis of why a wrong answer is wrong In my opinion understanding why an answer is wrong helps you avoid common traps and is almost as useful as understanding why the correct choice is right
After reading the CR bible you will be able to see why the GMAT is so popular with business school admissions The process of creating a Critical Reasoning question is carefully explained a fact which made me realize the amount of talent and effort that goes into making just one GMAT question The author of the book clearly shows due respect to the GMAT test and its creators which inspired me
If pressed for time the book offers a quick strategy for studying the most important question types
CONS
At around 50 practice questions the CR bible needs to be supplemented with other resources such as The Official Guide for GMAT Review 12th Edition or The Official Guide for GMAT Verbal Review 2nd Edition
Unlike most prep books this book does not come with a CD or online access to CATs computer adaptive practice tests
The book only features two boldface questions this question type is described in the Method of Reasoning chapter
BOTTOM LINE
The PowerScore Critical Reasoning Bible is definitely worth the money if you feel you re having trouble with Critical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension Its strategies and tips if carefully studied and applied will surely translate in an increase in your score I attribute much of my 11 point verbal raw score increase from 36 to 47 to this book
About me Dana Jinaru 770 GMAT scorer expert at Beat The GMAT a community serving 100K GMAT students/month
>> Great book for CR and RC too
I took my first GMAT and scored 670 Q44 V38 After evaluating my performance I realized that CR was definitely a weak spot so I browsed and found many recommendations for PowerScore s CR Bible I purchased the book just two weeks before my GMAT re take and studied the book religiously After a basic understanding of the principles identifying premise and conclusion etc I re took the GMAT and scored 750 Q49 V44 As you can see my verbal score jumped six points I attribute much of that improvement to the principles I learned in this book
So get this book early in your GMAT preparation and understand these fundamentals before tackling the OG problems Good luck

German Made Simple Learn to speak and understand German quickly and easily
>> wonderful book
this book is SO helpful in my venture to further my German The explanations are wonderful the exercises are very helpful as well
>> Winner
I took several years of German in school years ago Wishing to reclaim the ability to speak German I began studying German from various books Dummies was OK and did make some progress I found German Made Simple in a book store and it looked interesting Let me tell you this book is a winner I have made massive progress and even understand prepositions and the cases that govern them now Ja wunderbar
>> If Only There Were Audio
German Made Simple was an incredibly well written and thought out guide to German The entire course built upon itself and routinely brushed the reader up on concepts learned in earlier chapters My only complaint is that it did not come with an audio companion so it is quite easy to develop an American accent or whichever accent corresponds with your mother tongue That aside the constant repetition of vocabulary and key stylistic markers made for an enjoyable and easy approach to learning a very tough Romance Language

AP United States History w/CD ROM REA 8th Edition Test Preps
>> Not up to AP standards
As a teacher of APUSH I buy many review books to have on hand for students to look through and as a source for practice multiple choice questions This book is great on quantity but definitely sub par on quality AP style multiple choice questions are about much more than memorizing facts They require analysis of historical trends knowledge of cause and effect etc They re quite sophisticated The questions provided in this book just don t reach that level Compare these two examples
From the REA book
As a result of the Spanish American War the United States gained possession of Puerto Rico Guam and
A the Philippines
B Cuba
C Bermuda
D the Panama Canal Zone
E Hawaii
A style more typical of real AP questions
The Spanish American war spurred building of the Panama Canal by
A demonstrating the need to shift naval forces quickly from the Atlantic to the Pacific
B demonstrating the ease with which Latin American countries could be overcome by U S military force
C discrediting congressional opponents of the project
D removing the threat that any possible canal could be blockaded by Spanish forces based in Cuba and Puerto Rico
E demonstrating that such tropical diseases as malaria and yellow fever could be controlled
The book does include a CD Rom which might be a nice interface to practicing You can stop in the middle of an exam or practice with the included timer However I found the interface awkward and clunky
So in conclusion don t rely on this book to shape up your m/c question answering skills I agree with the previous poster that the Princeton books are a better choice Barrons is good too
>> Better resources available
I was a first year AP US teacher when I purchased this book and another by the Princeton Review
Both books are intended to be complete resources for reviewing for the AP Exam but the Princeton Review is substantially better in all areas
The selling point I thought in the REA book was the Six full length practice exams it advertises Though these tests are long the questions are simplistic and are little like real AP questions Most only require the student to know a definition The essay questions are acceptable but instead of explaining different approaches to writing the essay and evaluating the sources like the Princeton Review this book simply gives example essays
The biggest failing is the lack of depth about the AP test or proper strategy The first chapter of the Princeton Review goes into great detail about how to prepare and what strategies to use on the AP Test
This book does have lots of questions on US History but I would recommend using free resources like old AP tests over purchasing this book Better yet get yourself the Princeton Review book
>> I was serious and i got a five
Thanks god for this review book 5 Stars for five score points Serious about getting a five is no yellow journalism

Kaplan Medical Internal Medicine Question Book
>> The best question book
I had to update my review after I finished reading all of the sections I think I was being unfair to give this book 4 stars It truly deserves 5 stars and is certainly my best purchase on Amazon The Author has done a great job The quality of questions are a reflection of the considerable experience of the author they are very helpful both for exam purposes and the daily clinical practice you will find a lot of interesting questions in this book that will have a positive impact on your practice Initially I thought the question on MKSAP were better but I think this book leaves you with a lot more to take home And it s so cheap Well done to Dr Conrad Fischer

Barron s AP Human Geography Flash Cards Barron s the Leader in Test Preparation
>> exactly what the teacher ordered extremely fast shipping
AP Human Geography Teacher required this for her classroom It looks like a great way to help review concepts for tests and quizzes Beautifully produced in convenient storage box
>> Quick and Effective
The flashcards were surprisingly helpful They were easy to use and well organized into the correct units The examples provided were wonderful and during the exam I kept going back to things I remembered reading in the flashcards I highly recommend these as an extra study tool for the AP exam
>> Weird yet very helpful
When I first bought these and opened them up i saw that the first few cards were filled with useless information that made no difference that we never learned I m not one of those people who can sit at home and go through flashcards I m really more of a book person actually However I developed a strategy for these and I m fairly certain it worked Everyday I would grab a random handful of cards from different places in the box and take them to school with me Whenever I was bored in school I d simply pull out a card and this seemed to really help with studying especially when I would bring cards relevant to the particular section I was reviewing at home Believe me these cards helped immensely for the exam

100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum Choosing the Right Educational Philosophy for Your Child s Learning Style
>> Helpful with a Few Caveats
I did find it quite helpful in choosing curriculum to match the learning styles of children and teaching style of adults I would recommend it but caution that she has no problem interjecting her opinion She is a conservative Christian and anti unschooling It grates a little on my non religious nerves as she writes sentences such as God created each one as an individual with particular gifts abilities and interests or Because God is real we believe He has revealed truth to us in a way that seems to assume that everyone will/should agree with her So more liberal Christians/those who have no problem with evolution humanists agnostics and atheists and possibly those of other religions may find her completely inaccurate descriptions of evolution or insertion of her personal theology annoying while unschoolers may not appreciate her occasional denigration of the method I ve read books coming from a Christian worldview as the product description states but have not seen one pushing such a fundamentalist perspective coming from a secular publishing company before Because it is from a secular publishing company I do agree with other reviewers that it should be called 100 Top Picks for Christian Homeschool Curriculum
This is my only complaint Just thought I d throw that out there I know there are many conservative Christian homeschoolers and that they make up most of the homeschooling market However those who do not fit the mold may not find this book quite as wonderful or helpful
>> Must read for homeschoolers even if curriculum is not an issue
After reading about 12 books on homeschooling and homeschool curriculum this was the FINAL and best book I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK EVEN IF YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT CURRICULUM YOU WANT TO USE This book saved me from going completely insane After deciding to homeschool I immediately began to look at curriculum this has taken about 9 months Before reading throw out what all of your friends have told you that you need to use
This book helped me evaluate exactly what I wanted to accomplish in my schooling After determining this Duffy helps you to determine what style is best for what you want to accomplish For example what was best for me was unit studies Based on the questions you answer and the points assigned you will have a ranking for each style of teaching You evalute what type of learner you are She gives non meaningful names to the different types but it is easy to pick yourself from a list of traits For example I was a Wiggly Willy You then evaluate what type of learner your child is/children are I have a Wiggly Willy and Competent Carl these are gender neutral names By evaluating this you are able to determine which curriculum will work best for your child or children
She then has a chart of the different curriculums divided by subject and areas She gives a number ranking in several different categories for each curriculum Basically I had to look at my child s learning style and see which had 5 s or 4 s It also tells if the curriculm has Christian teaches Catholic Protestant etc or if there is no Christian teaching The other things she ranks independent study or one on one amount of writing involved for student prep time grade specific or multilevel ease of use for teacher if the teacher s manual is really needed or not useful if it supports Charlotte Mason philosophy or classical
Lastly she gives her review of each of the 100 curriculums so you can actually read more about which curriculum you have decided is best for you She even tells you what you really need and don t need plus the average price This may sound a little complicated but it is not at all It is very easy and laid out nice and organized for us novice homeschoolers I wish I had started with this book first
The only not so great thing I found about this book is it did not help me evalute pre school programs for my almost 4 year old So if you are only looking for pre school info don t even bother with this one Otherwise it was fantastic
>> Must have for 1st timers
This book is very valuable I am homeschooling for the 1st time and was simply overwhelmed by the many many choices of curicula I ordered this book and it took about 3 months to work through it It is not only a top pick book but also a workbook for figuring out your own teaching style and your child s learning style I went to my first convention already knowing what I was looking for and would have been lost had I not read this book first I recommend it highly

There s Money Where Your Mouth Is An Insider s Guide to a Career in Voice overs
>> Good information but partially obsolete
I liked this book and the author s easy going narrative Elaine Clark is clearly talented and well respected in the voice over field That being said the book clearly needs an update When I bought the Second Edition I thought I would be getting more up to date info This may be partially my fault as I guess I did not scrutinize the publishing date before I clicked the Buy button There is half a chapter on casette duplication and cassette artwork The section detailing salary expectations is also 8 10 years behind We don t want to work that cheap If there isn t a more recent update then certain infomation should be completely omitted from the book Reading the above mentioned sections and some others made me wonder what other antiquated advice I may take to heart and then make a mistake as a direct result If you can buy this book at a discount and keep the above caveats in mind there is much useful information for your tool belt
>> Tough Great Read Which Needs Revision
I enjoyed this book very much Its best features are that it breaks down the types of work and gives many chances to practice sample reads followed or preceded by an analysis of the motivation problem tone audience age behind the copy The only thing that hampers this book from being a a great work today is that it was published 9 years ago looks like it was initially written in 1995 and does not appear to ever be updated As an example the sections dealing with DAT demo box design have little application and some of the practice exercises refer to either products or character exchanges which seem a bit dated today Some information might wish to be compared with more recently authored work No one needs insight about Wang Computers in the age of the Mac One can only hope this work is quickly updated It used to be one of the bibles to many It should be that way again Perhaps the print size might be increased as well
>> An All In One Guide
OK as a disclaimer I must say I have studied with Elaine for 2 years at her studio in San Francisco and I have worked on voice jobs for her as well However I bought this book prior to discovering her voice over school and I was blown away by the depth of information included in it When I found out I could study directly from Elaine I jumped at the chance and I have not been disappointed
The number one thing that most new voice over students don t understand is that a good voice is not the most important thing in voice acting It is the acting In this book you learn how to apply Elaine s methods for bringing emotion and honesty into any kind of read Whether you are selling cleaning products on TV narrating a corporate report or providing the voice for a wacky robot toy you must be grounded in reality This book will show you tips and techniques to achieve the level of real that is desired by agents directors and clients
There is a huge diversity of voice jobs out there and Elaine covers them all Television promos commercials narration audio books radio plays toys animation etc all are given specific information and hands on techniques While I must say that nothing can equal the work a student does in one on one sessions where you get immediate feedback this book goes a long way to providing you with a springboard for study If you read and apply the lessons by practicing recording and critiquing you can get ahead of anyone who thinks they can go it alone on natural talent Voice over is a landscape of techniques and this book is the Atlas of that sometimes strange land

Our son is currently engaged in his college hunt He s a fairly well qualified high school junior top 10 of his class varsity sports Eagle Scout outside job etc We thought this college thing would be a fairly easy process WRONG
We are so thankful to have discovered this book Dr Hernandez does a superb job of explaining the entire process of applying to a highly selective college or university She provides a behind the scenes look at how a college application is screened while providing many practical and insightful recommendations on completing the process Had we not discovered this book I can assure you our son would have made some egregious errors when completing his applications
To date we ve visited Cornell Duke Wake Forest and UNC Chapel Hill Each of the college admissions lectures we received at these institutions validated the information in this book It was as though Dr Hernandez was prescient If you ve not already done so I cannot encourage you enough to VISIT COLLEGES Listen to their admissions presentations Take their tours Talk to their students You ll learn a great deal that s not addressed in the U S News World Report and Princeton Review college selection guides And it s FUN
Run don t walk to purchase this publication It s a quick read Have a highlighter handy
I also highly recommend The Early Admissions Game by Christopher Avery It s imperative you understand the effect of Early Decision on the college acceptance process
Good luck during your college hunt
