PHR/SPHR Professional in Human Resources Certification Study Guide
>> Great help but not to be used alone
Really liked this book I used 3 study guides to earn my PHR Best part of this one the laws were really laid out thoroughly whereas the other two skimmed the important parts to remember The best way to remember for me was to know the whole story
>> Good as a secondary study resource and overview of HR BOK
I definitely recommend this book but not as a primary study tool I purchased it along with the 900 Sample Test Guide The book is not the most comfortable to carry around so the CD E book that comes with it was a tremendous help I was able to print out the sections I needed or just read the pages on my laptop Also I really liked how the book is sectioned for each area of the HRCI BOK so you can pick the sections to focus on I took the SPHR exam this month and passed so this book was worth the purchase
>> Okay as secondary source
I took the PHR last week and passed I self studed and relied primarily on PHR Exam Prep by Cathy Lee Gibson and then reviewed my weaker areas by reading specific chapters of PHR/SPHR Professional in Human Resources Certification Study Guide by Anne M Bogardus

I actually bought Bogardus book first but found that it was written in a very boring manner I was not particularly impressed with the format and chapter organization Then I bought Gibson s book and was much more satisifed all around

However I do think that Bogardus book provides good material I used this as a secondary source The book also comes with a great CD that provides practice exam questions

Good luck I studied a solid 4 months they recommend at least 3 months of prep work

McGraw Hill s 10 ACT Practice Tests Second Edition McGraw Hill s 10 Practice Acts
>> PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE
The main thing I was looking for when I went looking for ACT Prep Books were practice tests They are no doubt the best way to improve your score on the ACT I knew that The Real ACT Prep Guide The Only Official Prep Guide From The Makers Of The ACT which I also bought was the only way that I was going to be able to get real ACT tests that had been used before These are of course the best tests you can take as other practice tests can sometimes be too easy or even too hard

I went looking on Amazon for some more practice books and this one literally jumped out at me on the list TEN ACT PRACTICE TESTS TEN TEN I knew I had to get this book if it was going to give me ten whole practice tests that I could work through during the the three to four times I was planning on taking the ACT So I bought it and I would advise that you do the same

The great thing about this book is that it has 10 whole practice tests I would definitely say that they are a little on the easier side compared to the real thing but if you want practice then its worth it for the fact that it does simulate the Real ACT

For an example of how it is easier than the Real ACT I bought this book and got an ENGLISH 33 MATH 29 READING 31 SCIENCE 31 COMPOSITE 31 That made me pretty happy as I was aiming for the 30s However when I took the actual test I got an ENGLISH 33 MATH 29 READING 26 SCIENCE 27 COMPOSITE 29 As you can see my reading an science scores were significantly higher on these practice tests than on the Real ACT and my composite went down by two points So in general I would say that these two sections reading science are easier on these than the real thing I ve even taken a practice reading out of this book and gotten a 35 that gave me a real shock and then got a 25 on the actual test that shocked me even more However in general your practice composites will be within 1 3 points of your actual

Overall whether you re shooting for the teens the low mid or high twenties or even the low thirties this book is worth the 10 or so bucks However if you re looking to achieve anywhere from a 33 36 this book isn t going to do much for you and instead I would recommend Barron s ACT 36 Aiming for the Perfect Score

SO if you re looking for some decent practice tests and NOT a learn how to do well on the ACT book then this book will pretty much do it for you It s got 10 full practice tests along with decent explanations of the answers

NOTE If you are the kind of person that generally scores in the high twenties to low thirties then DO NOT follow the scoring procedures in this book Instead count how many you got right and go to the scoring tables in The Real ACT Prep Guide The Only Official Prep Guide From The Makers Of The ACT and find where your raw score matches on an average of the three sub scores it gives you there This will be MUCH more accurate

>> Filled with innaccuracies
I am an ACT Tutor who used this book for students This edition is chock full of discrepencies and is very poorly edited The answers keys are often just wrong or the explanation offered for the answer doesn t make sense It s a shame because this is the only book that offers 10 tests
>> Waste of Money
I have done almost every test in the book and have found it to be extremely inaccurate Some questions have multiple answers and some don t even make sense I have scored 30 in every other ACT book but only a 25 in this one The English sections feature run ons and incorrect usage of commas while the math section is way too easy to be a real ACT test The science is also too easy Overall the book is full of errors and cannot help anyone raise their score Use THE REAL ACT PREP GUIDE made by the official ACT makers

>> GRE Verbal
The practice tests and helpful hints throughout the book have really helped me a lot
>> Deja Vu I have answered these questions before
I purchased the Kaplan Premier 2009 book Currently I am reviewing the verbal portion of the GRE I picked up this Kaplan Verbal Workbook because I want a stellar score I am finding that many if not most of the questions in this verbal workbook are questions I have seen before in the premier quide

Kaplan I am grant you one star for your indolence Hopefully when I take the full GRE practice tests all of the questions will be fresh

An additional criticism of the Kaplan Premier 2009 book is their predilection towards Windows There are technologies that are OS independent ie HTML/Java/Flash Your programming foundation excludes Mac and Linux users I am able to use the CD as I own a Windows box and use Parallels on my MacBook Pro

Not sure if I will give the Quantitative review a look or not I may have to physically review the quantitative book in a store to see if there were as lazy as I have noticed in this book

>> If you want your students to earn college credit for AP Statistics use this book
Dr Martin Sternstein has outdone himself again With each new edition this fabulous review book includes more topics better explanations more practice problems based on recent AP exams improved rubrics and better technology This review book is far and away the best on the market Professor Sternstein is a true master teacher I use this review book religiously both throughout the school year as well as at test prep time My students have been running a 90 pass rate on the AP Statistics exam which compares nicely to the national 60 pass rate Use this book you won t regret it Teacher Tip Use this book in conjunction with Dr Sternsteins flashcards the kids love them
>> mg48439
the book came in a very timely manner and in very good condition my son hasn t had to use it yet but intends to for his next multiple choice test
>> Good book for relaxed AP review
Barron s books tend to have a more cramped style than Princeton review and are unpleasing to the eye but the content in this book is just plain better I am writing this review after receiving a 5 on the AP Statistics exam after using this book Its explanations of key concepts are better than Princeton Review s which tend to be confusing at times which is enough for me to dislike it Princeton review also assumes that you are stupid and give formulas that are unintuitive but get you the answer Due to the cramped style I d recommend you give yourself a bit of time to get used to it and slowly look through it it will serve you well

Barron s GRE Flash Cards
>> Very useful and helpful
The cards come split into a math section and vocab section and come with a metal ring to hold however many cards you want I found the vocab cards more useful than the math tho the math cards are also good My only complaint is that the vocab cards were not arranged in order of difficulty but I did that myself
>> Handling
I haven t taken the GRE test yet so I can not tell about the effectiveness of this product the only thing I can say is that they are very easy to handle and carry I ve crosschecked a few words with dictionaries online and found them correct
>> Pretty solid Math Review Great Layout for Vocab training Overal nice package
When I set out to practice for the GRE General I bought 3 items from different testing groups a 500 vocab set from Kaplan Princeton Review Book and these Flash Cards

Long story short for Vocab you WILL acquire the words from the Barron s Flash cards than the Kaplan set They re far better presented
For Math I personally found the majority of the problems on these flash cards more encompassing than the problems I found on ETS s Powerprep software but DO practice with PowerPrep

As for details the box itself is real sturdy the cards are pretty durable and you get a convenient ring to grab a few cards on the go The stock cards are far more durable than the flimsy Kaplan set which are paper thin sheets moreso than cards

The cards themselves are split as follows 250 Vocabulary words 25 Math Strategy Cards 75 Math Facts 75 Quantitative Comparison and 75 Multiple Choice Math problems

The presentation for ALL the cards is really well done in my opinion

The 250 Verbal cards are set up as follows
Front Word Context Clue and a space for putting your own personal clue
Back Definition and synonyms Antonyms fill in sentence and Analogy sample with explanation of the relationship

All in all there s plenty of material on each card and I found myself learning the words on these cards far better than those on the Kaplan set My only quip for the cards were that they did not come with pronunciations not a major deal I suppose unless you legitimately want to improve your vocabulary permanently

The Problems for the Math card sets were well constructed as well minus the grievous typos I found

All Math cards came with a sample setup matching what you d see on a GRE screen for Quant Comparison and Multi Choice In the back you will find at least one explanation for WHY the answer choice is correct In many cases they give you an Algebraic explanation but they realize in some cases plugging in works well and you can use Process of Elimination to finish the problem as well They also give references to see certain Math Strategy or Fact card s when applicable to help explain the answer choices

Overall the package is a pretty good deal

NOTE
1 You should look into other sources for additional GRE vocabulary words 250 words are not enough especially when considering that there are so many random words that ETS can pick for the test By comparison to the Kaplan Vocab Card set most of these words were also found in their set however
2 DO THE POWERPREP Software from ETS Simply put there s no better way to prepare for the Computer Adaptive Test than by taking a Computer Adaptive Test IT IS FREE to download and WILL help you time yourself

For those who have purchased the cards here s a couple corrections for two of the Math cards
MC 12 claims the answer is C but the explanation and work prove the answer is D
MC 36 should say 7 a 7 b and NOT 7a 7b otherwise the problem would require logarithms to solve which are NOT on the GRE

The C Programming Language
>> the C owner s manual
This is a great reference as well as an in depth look into the standard library
>> Book by the the creator
One of the first books on the C language by Brian Kernighan
This book was translated to many languages and there are several editions before and after this one with improvements and extras A book written for advanced programmers taking them to the expert level smoothly

In the beginning of the computer evolutionary era there were many critical issues that was resolved by standardizing the computer system language attachments i/o s etc That is why you see the ANSI C in the book which relates to American standard input

This book is of 8 chapters covering the C programming structure and ending by relating all of that to UNIX one of the main computer operating system back then made by professionals to be used by professionals a multi user multi process OS

The book has a very helpful references for programmers in the appendix and can be used as a guide for advance users
>> Extremely well written
Let me start off by saying that I m not a novice programmer so this review will be biased given that fact alone That said this book was an eye opener on so many levels One thing that is NEVER touched upon by other C programming books is project management and modularization Chapter 4 of this book had a great discussion on techniques to organize code This is not a big deal for the hobbyist but for us programmers in industry dealing with large embedded projects it is E g try to avoid extern variables publish only what is needed to header files etc

Outside of that K R avoids the pitfall of discussing every single point they only discuss what is necessary to write modular system independent and well organized code This book also discusses the history of parts of the language and what the intent was when writing the language This is far more important than many people think because now you re tapping into years of rich programming experience at Bell labs where K R worked

Lastly this book CAN be conquered by novice programmers but they will have to read this book slowly and hang on every word This isn t too daunting because excluding the reference we re looking at 189 pages of text Not all of the problems need be worked to gain full understanding of this book Some problems are trivial while others are so broad that the answers border on becoming subjective Either way they should all be attempted and thought about A solution manual is worth investing in but is not necessary If you decide to embark on the journey through this book devote AT LEAST a month to it Reading slowly and actively thinking about what s going on will reward you with a lifetime of C programming knowledge

Examkrackers 1001 Questions in MCAT in Physics
>> From 8 to 13 on PS
Did every question in this book and saw my AAMC practice scores increase over the weeks I did 100 questions of the book each week for 3 months leading up to the real test and got me a 13 I am still in the process of applying but feel much more confident with a 34 on my plate thanks to this book

There are some errors in the book but keep an eye out for them and consult with those PhDs you pay so much to have around on any that strike you as incorrect
>> It helped me improve my MCAT physics score
Did you get your MCAT score back and feel like a retard I went from a 5 to an 8 in the physics section of my MCAT after I did the problems in this book I did about every 3 problems It took 2 months to do but was well worth it If physics is your problem area do as many problems as you can The problems in here are simple and teach you the basic concepts The format is not the same as the MCAT because on the MCAT there are passages But if you don t have the basic concepts of physics down doing lengthy passage questions won t help you My suggestion to you is to practice with this book first and use another book for physics passage questions The KAPLAN books are not as good at least for physics prep in my opinion When I only used kaplan I got a 5 Go with this book for your physics preparation

Good luck
>> Great for Practice
This is a great review book for practicing various physics topics It will improve your speed and your thinking in approaching physics problems on the real MCAT thus allowing you to finish the section in time I improved my scores from 08 to 12 when i used this book 4 years after taking physics I II I highly recommend it

>> Cliffs Notes helpful but does not replace reading the book
Quick and short synopsis to the book s story Read the book first and get a friend who has read it or someone with a good argumentative view to bounce the ideas in Cliffs Notes with you
>> A classic but
I know this book is a classic but I did not enjoy it Though I liked Hemingway s Old Man and the Sea Farewell to Arms seemed rather boring It gives a realistic and fairly hopeless view of war revealing of Hemingway s own experiences The soldier and the nurse s love affair is also autobiographical but somehow has an unrealistic quality Maybe I just don t like the nurse s characther disregarding her own identity The action is pretty slow and though the ending is foreshadowed it felt more like a chopping off of a story than a closing Overall some interesting themes and classic messages about human nature but a slow and terse writing style

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Cliffs Notes
>> Great purchase
Purchasing this textbook thru this company saved me about 50 00 It came to me in perfect condition and I am very thrilled with the amount of information the book has It s really easy to read and gives lots of examples
>> Incredible and well told
Incidents in the life of a Slave Girl is the incredible life journey of Harriet Jacobs a k a Linda Brent from oppression to freedom One could scarcely believe the lengths a human soul would suffer to attain it

I was engulfed in Harriet s story There were things I never put much thought to like the lives of the slaves of kind masters were held so delicately in balance for when they die life can change so quickly and even the granting of freedom upon death can be no guarantee of freedom Harriet makes a passionate argument for why slaves even under kind masters should be set free

Harriet describes things so hard to believe I did find myself doubting like hiding in quarters so cramped she could not stand up for seven years It s not that a person wouldn t want to do that given the alternative of slavery and she didn t know initially how long she would be there It s implausible because this storage shed was on her grandmother s property and that property was under suspicion so that it was searched inside and out and no one thought to search the shed just because no one ever went in there The attic of that shed would have been the first place I d have looked even if it didn t look like it had a door Her children weren t supposed to know she was there but her son figured it out because he heard her cough Well he was just a little boy and he figured it out Surely others heard noises as well

Secondly her master sought her as he would try to woo a girlfriend When she ran away he searched for her and offered rewards as would be expected of slave owners However after seven years neigh even more he continued to travel north in search of her Even if he were smitten with her I wouldn t have expected it to last that long Considering she was his slave I would think he would have thought her forever lost property and she d been replaced except for maybe outstanding reward money Harriet said slaves were treated like dogs and people don t usually travel the states for seven years looking for lost dogs

Overlooking those details I was able to enjoy the book Harriet Jacobs was a talented writer I lived her life through her words Though it sometimes read like fiction it could not have been better told

>> Excellent Novel
Wow Where do I start This novel is the epitome of a well rounded slavery novel The details were nothing short of amazing At any given moment I can find myself vividly imagining the scenery and ambience that the novel speaks of This is one of my favorite pieces of literature and I believe everyone should experience this vivid account of Harriet s difficult ascent from slavery to freedom I only wish there was something to tell of how Harriet s life progressed where the novel leaves off

Series 7 Exam For Dummies
>> Must Have for Preparing for Series 7
I took my Series 7 this morning and passed with a 74 I must say that this book played a big part in my passing The book highlights the most important material in a very down to earth and interesting way well as interesting as it can be The options chapter was especially helpful and I had many aha moments as I read through the book It really helped me pull everything together As I was going through some of the practice questions I did find some mistakes so I didn t use the practice tests or the CD I recommend using this book to supplement your studying and definitely not as the only source of your studying How I incorporated this book was by reading my entire Series 7 book that I received from STC I took about 8 or 9 STC practice tests then I took the 4 day long STC class After all of that I read through the Series 7 for Dummies book to try to solidify some of the topics that I was still having trouble with options taxation margin It really helped and I don t think that I would have passed without it I m so happy that I don t have to go back for a second try I def recommend this book
>> Good Bathroom Read
Pretty good book The author prepares the reader for the actual test through what to expect The downside is the material is out dated and the practice exams are off a little bit I constantly caught myself correcting the author s answers to his mock exam questions It does how ever keep you entrenched with the material even if you only read it in the bathroom He had the best advice I ve heard from any rep or instructor Learn new material every day but reinforce old material daily as well To pass the Seven you must study every day and own the material There are no shortcuts I passed earlier today through obsessive study Buy this book only as side note to a real study plan Good Luck

>> Great supplement to study materials
I read this after I studied my STC materials and it helped me get a better grasp on the main topics Previously I had taken the exam 3 times but failed miserably This time around I got a 82

Thanks

>> Great Study Tool for the GMAT
The book has been very helpful in studying for the GMAT and I would recommend it for people who need to review for the test It has examples and practices tests that will help you prepare for the GMAT
>> Best guide for the GMAT
While this won t apply to everyone I used this review during the 12 days studying that I had to study for the test and was able to boost my estimated score by about 100 points In the end I got a 710 on this test so that should provide a good selling point

The best aspect of this book is that it teaches you how to think like the test makers On all of the practice problems there is a solid explanation for the correct answer along with justifications for the false answers

The other great thing is that the book doesn t waste time It only teaches the material that will be covered on the test and it teaches the process of elimination techniques that you ll need to work through the test questions as fast as you ll need to

I d strongly recommend this book over any other book out there

This book covered all the topics that were on the AP test without it I would have been lost as to what to focus on and what to discard Of course I had to study my school textbook for the finer details but as review books go this one is the best It definitely helped me get a 5 last year
>> AP Biology 9780470097649
The structures shown in figure 2 5 and 2 6 have errors in them The fatty acid portion of the structure is wrong There should not be a carbon atom between the oxygen atom and the carbonyl group Compare that to structure D on page 27 which is correct

I have not reviewed the entire book If you d like a comprehensive editing/review my friends and I have hundreds of years experience in chemistry and biochemistry Ag science R D and are all currently unemployed We enjoy working as a team Since our lay off several of us have tutored or taught chemistry lab classes at the college level

All Quiet On The Western Front
>> no catch a must read classic
I was a bit afraid that a 70 y o novel focused on portraying the violence of the dirty war would be diluted by what we re fed every day through the medias but I now can see why the first person narrative through the eyes of an 18 y o german who struggles to understand and accept he has to live like an animal to survive is still a classic today How at 18 war youth and adulthood are already behind him the non sense of it all the loneliness the realization that if hierarchy didn t exist war wouldn t have taken place and for him to realize he could never go back to a normal life after the horror of the trenches are only few of the ideas you carry with you after having turned the last page Best war book ever after Catch 22 Could be

All Quiet on the Western Front
308 words
I thought All Quiet on the Western Front was quite an amazing book I am a teenager and usually we boys don t really care about books or poetry This book however really got a hold of me because of how much it relates to teenage guys All guys like to have power either when they re messing around with their friends or at school They like to be the top dog They like to think they got swag or rep The army is the biggest way to brag and say yeah what about it I m in the army don t mess with me The book shows us that it s not at all fun and glory Almost everything about it is awful and horrible to the human body In WWI there were a lot of new machines and their main goal was to kill the enemy so thousands of people died or were injured The ones who were lucky to survive were scarred for life Even though we boys think it s cool to kill people in video games this book really drew a picture in my mind that gave me second thoughts The book is told from a German point of view in the war This gives it a twist I think because in the middle of the book you start to chear for the Germans which was unexpected for me because I am an American The story goes through the life of a young boy who wants to be part of the Great War It really got a hold of me when he was in a ditch and he was hand fighting with a French soldier I couldn t even imagine battling over my life with another person who just wants to live through this hell and go home to his family This book really meant a lot to me and every teenager should read this

>> Brilliant and moving
I had read this as an older teen and sorta liked it sorta could leave it Re reading it again as an adult I don t know maybe one has to be a certain age this time around I was deeply affected by the melancholy and spirit in the book It is a novel of heart felt camaderie of young men who strive to do their duty then begin to question the root of their suffering and sacrifice In the simple words of a soldier the question is asked why Why all these mortal wounds this wrenching parting from family this utterly displaced and decimated generation why are we asked to do this and why do we not resist The voice is of a quiet and reflective young man from a poor family who has enlisted at the urging of his teachers and is trying to stay alive through the horrors of trench warfare

Other writers have written sad/funny accounts of military training and of war But no one else has yet in my opinion matched Remarque for the immediacy of the portrait he draws the subtle humor the deep yet understated sorrow This soldier s impatience with the civilians while on home leave his bond with his ailing mother his need for quiet and silence all are brilliantly written He demonstrates how life and death are a virtual game of chance in a soldier s life in face of which idealism is long gone Written from a young German soldiers point of view it has considerably reduced the knot of suspicion I have carried in my heart about the axis for over 3 decades I hope this is required reading for all recruits and later for generals alike

Nothing much to say here these are the actual past LSATs combined into a book of ten No extras such as explanations although there is some general LSAT info at the beginning Using these actual past LSATs is CRUCIAL to studying for the LSAT and this book of ten is the best value I ve seen for them Buy as many of the old tests as you can find

>> Bad description
This seller has deceitfully described the item
The book was in horrible condition
It was bent and ripped in all corners and written all over the book Never Ever buy

Good book to get you started on your essay but the sample essays are not by the avg med school applicants
>> Useful but not completely
This book has a lot of good advice but all the sample essays are from people who got accepted to Harvard Medical School I know most of us haven t volunteered in a 3rd world country or published research papers or saved someone s life so it would have been nice to read some essays from a non superhero applicant Also a little variety as to what schools they were accepted to would have been nice They were all Harvard and other Ivy League schools It also sounds like the authors consider those to be the top schools but they may or may not be depending on whether you re talking about research or primary care Bottom line needs more variety of example essays But overall it was a pretty useful guide

Getting To Maybe How to Excel on Law School Exams
>> Game Changer
This is the first law school study aid that has made sense of the vast material being studied along with a road map to successfully using this knowledge to answer essay questions It s a construct It maps patterns in questions and answers I struggled with IRAC which seemed too simplistic never seemed to fit and didn t afford the kind of depth of thinking and analysis graders expect to see or that a future client would expect to hear This truly is the book I ve been looking for Read 140 pages in first sitting and expect to read and re read many times Restored my confidence in the pursuit of a law degree Highly recommended
>> beyond exams
This book is about thinking like a lawyer No other book breaks down the taxonomy of legal problems like this book It should be required reading for all entering 1Ls
>> Great book
As a struggling 1L who didn t do so well her first semester I would highly recommend this book Professors/study groups do not teach you HOW to ace exams they merely teach you the law

First Aid QAndA for the USMLE Step 1 First Aid Series
>> Good questions
In comparing these questions to USMLE world they tend to be a little easier Unfortunately I cannot compare them to Kaplan online because I don t have any experience with it However the questions are similar in difficulty to the Kaplan Qbook Some of the chapters are easier than others As a whole however the questions are pretty good They are representative of questions that you will see on USMLE step 1 and great explanations are at the end of each chapter I was hoping to use this book with First Aid but I found that some of the chapters were combined Neuro/Psych which made it a little more difficult to break it down by chapter However overall if you are looking for a good question source that won t break your pocket book this is it
>> Terrible editing mistake ridden and overly simple questions
I started going through this book and just stopped Relative to the other qbanks available its a waste Many questions are either unrealistically simple or overly tricky due to poor wording/editing Many explanations are inadequate and are merely statements of fact

The book would be acceptable if it were not for the mistakes In one chapter more than 10 of the questions had blatant mistakes or seriously misleading information Combined with the poor wording on many questions it makes answering some questions a pain

I guess if you need a cheap qbank or one on paper this will work but there are FAR better resources to study from
>> Great book great seller
The seller shipped this item FAST and it is exactly as described will definitely do business again

CliffsNotes Math Review for Standardized Tests Cliffs Test Prep Math Review Standardized
>> Huge improvement
It had been about 10 years since I was in high school and solving math problems on a regular basis By drilling with the questions in this book I improved my quantitative score on my first practice GRE from 590 to 750 on the actual test
>> I hate math but I love this book
I am planning to take the GMAT so I bought this book to review before I start getting into quant on the GMAT I never enjoyed math in high school which was over 6 years ago nor was it my best subject and during college I only had to take one statistics class When I sat down to review math I honestly didn t even remember how to do long division without using a calculator simply because I haven t needed to do that for years I am halfway through this book now and it s really helpful It starts off easy and reviews all the basics along with a refresher on all of the rules of math I feel as though most review books assume you know the basics and just dive right in so that s why I like this book The book gets progressively harder in each chapter but it still ties in things you have just reviewed I really like that each time the book introduces a new subject it gives you 5 10 quick practice problems to do to make sure you understand it before moving on There is a diagnostic test in the beginning of each chapter as well as a longer review test at the end I also like how this book isn t very big it s not the same size as the giant standardized test books they make so it s not very indimidating I can t imagine a better way to relearn math lots of easy to understand review and plenty of practice problems Highly recommended
>> Great overview of algebra geometry and tricky math
This book is like a math dictionary very thorough and covers all the confusing concepts of math I found it so helpful that I decided to keep it indefinitely in case I ever have to look up something

Manhattan GMAT Set of 8 Strategy Guides 4th Edition
>> Get this collection and an Official Guide 12ed and you are set
If you are just starting out with GMAT prep get this bundle it s a good deal for the Manhattan GMAT Guides separately they cost close to 150 These books don t emphasize tricks or easy ways to 700 score instead they methodically cover areas tested and should be pretty much all you will need besides the Official Guides see below for links If this is above your budget then would recommend you pick the best of the pack
Number Properties Guide condensed overview of Arithmetic and strategies for saving time/solving questions more effectively
Word Translations Guide includes some of the hardest topics probability combinations and statistics
Sentence Correction best book out there and closely followed by PowerScore SC
Critical Reasoning only second to PowerScore CR but by a slim margin
Reading Comprehension there are no other dedicated RC books on market really
Between these 5 books you should have 80 90 of the GMAT covered and the rest could be picked up from the remaining books and practice with the Official Guides You can throw in a Kaplan Premier as well a good intro to GMAT book with 6 free GMAT Tets It is a good starter book to get your feet wet but definitely not a must

To make the most use out of the MGMAT guides you will need the Official Guide 12th and also OG Verbal 2ed and OG Quant 2nd are recommended The guides refer to these 3 books for additional practice questions If you own previous versions of the Official Guide books you can use those too with a translation table available from MGMAT s website
Each book comes with access to 6 online gmat tests and additional question banks Don t spend money on these as they are pricey 45 for 6 tests on the MGMAT website

Also if you are new to the GMAT download 2 official practice tests from and take one of them before you start prepping to get your level very helpful to track your progress along the way but don t waste these tests they use real retired gmat questions and though it is possible to recycle them there are close to 900 questions in the banks would recommend you use something less valuable for your practice such as MGMAT tests included with these books

One more thing don t rush into questions and tests you will only hurt your self confidence instead methodically cover each math and verbal topic and only after you are done with each of the sections move on to take the tests take math only after you are done with math and verbal only after done with verbal Final word of advice the main mistake esp in verbal is not following strategies Whichever books or strategies you use they are all pretty similar between MGMAT PowerScore and Kaplan follow them EXACTLY These people are getting big bucks to develop methods to improve score and maximize performance don t try to be smarter and change things around Unless you are scoring 750 I would follow each step of the strategy to the T If the book says to read the CR question twice then that s what you do even though it may seem that it is faster to read it once trust me there is a reason why you read it twice If you want to get 700 and not worry about the GMAT stick to the strategies and keep creativity low

Hopefully this will get you started For more details on each of the guides see my reviews of each of the individual books

McGraw Hill s Conquering the ACT Math
>> Highly recommended for ACT Math review
I scanned through the ACT review math books before deciding to purchase this one I am glad I did This book provides a full range of the math problems on the ACT test and also provides full explanations of the answers if you come across a problem you just can t figure out I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is planning on taking the ACT test
>> Love this book but a bit easy
I think this is a great book for ACT math prep It has 5 practice tests that all seem well written It breaks down the math section into major topics pre algebra algebra geometry trig etc then covers specific types of problems within each major topic There are mini tests over each category too which I think is really helpful I ve pretty much used the book cover to cover I have found 2 errors though and it doesn t cover every math topic you need to know for the test

March 2010 update I now think this book is a little too easy especially for those looking for a top score say 30 and up I still think it s an ideal book for those looking for scores in the mid to maybe upper twenties or below though The questions aren t quite as hard as those in the recent official ACT preparation booklets so I think the scaled scores from here would be a little inflated
>> Wonderful
I purchased this book because math is my weakest subject on the act I was scoring a 16 on the act test I need a 20 for the promise scholarship in WV it pays for your tuition I just read some of the tips and nothing else and it raised my score 1 point to a 17 Finally this summer I have used this book almost weekly to get ready for the ACT test in September

When I took the first diagnostic exam in the book it said an 16 I am on my second test and I received a 20 i am so excited because there is 3 mores tests to go and I think I will be able to raise it to maybe a 22 that way I feel like I can get at lest a 20 on the real test In September I will tell you how it went

Not only did I use it to practice fort the ACT but I also used it to practice for the COMPASS Math Test I started with a 17 on the COMPASS and raised it to a 44 I no longer would have to take a non credited math class in college In my high school I need a 49 on the COMPASS test to taker College Algebra I think with a little more practice I will get it before school starts

I strongly suggest this book

Spark Notes To the Lighthouse
>> Haunting
In what is perhaps one of the most well known novels of the 20th century Virginia paints the portrait of the Ramsey family living in their summer home on an island off the coast of Scotland at three pivotal moments It s a simple story but painfully beautiful in the telling

Written entirely in stream of conciousness Woolf takes it one step further than most and jumps from the thoughts of one person to the next with little to no warning This can make it difficult to follow for many but I only lost myself once and quickly figured it out This is a storytelling device that has always greatly appealled to me and Woolf did not disappoint The prose itself was more poetry than anything and many of the passages the words are strung together so beautifully that I can only describe it as hearbreaking I am not a rereader of novels but I could easily see myself reading this book once a year

>> Illumination
Virginia Woolf s To The Lighthouse can be a difficult read with its highly stylized stream of consciousness prose but it is a rewarding one in the end even if it seems that nothing much has happened over the course of the novel Despite taking place within a set period of time from 1910 1920 the conflicts and themes presented transcend far beyond the scope of the novel To The Lighthouse is a unique standard bearer for early modern literature

To say that To The Lighthouse is a tale about the Ramsay family would be selling the book short While this family and their experiences are the core of the novel Woolf delves into some heavy examination of the roles that males and females are meant to play in society Mrs Ramsay is beloved by all for her extraordinary beauty still evident in her fifties but she is tied down by a demanding husband eight very different children and her own need to oversee every facet of people s lives Mr Ramsay a selfish philosopher depends upon his wife to build his ego no matter the expense or the damage caused to his children This examination of their lives takes place at their summer home on the Isle of Skye in Scotland with their various guests Woolf begins by painting a loving and generous portrait of the Ramsays modeled upon her own parents before moving the action of the novel ten years into the future after the family has experienced a few catastrophes that they struggle to get over The novel ends with the perspective of the outsiders trying to make sense of what has been lost and what it means to life as a whole

Virgina Woolf was an exceptionally talented writer able to make mundane details vivid and able to capture the intricacies of family life and marriage without seeming sentimental Her prose is poetic following tangential thoughts to complete her circuitous paragraphs Woolf allows her readers insight into not only one family but into situations that concern everyone mortality love family and one s legacy To The Lighthouse is a wonderful testament to Woolf s legacy as one of the premier authors of modern literature
>> This review is for the edition as published not the content
The book is great but this edition by Classic House Books is unacceptable It looks home published from cover to cover including the ridiculous blurb on the back and the junior high graphics The real problem though is that I am now up to page 26 and the typos have been so numerous it s really almost unreadable after just encountering the word furtile I had to stop and write this review What s the point of this edition Buy a different version reader

>> saved a few
I ordered direct from a distributor and SAVED a few in shipping cost vs Amazon That was unique amazon usually cheaper than distributor but hey
save a few here save a few there The book was in new condition and sent in bubble wrapped envelope
>> exactly what i wanted
i was looking for sample tests to guide my studies and determine which clep tests i was the most qualified to take this book is great for people who just need to know what the tests are like so they can determine their likelihood of passing
this is not a study guide
within 2 weeks of buying this book i took 2 different clep tests and passed with 6 college credits each i m an older student so i had about 20 years of self education under my belt it feels pretty cool to get a semester s worth of college credit this way the tests were about an hour and a half each and cost about 85 00 each
i recommend this book for older students who have already learned a lot and don t need to sit through a college class on everything

The Story of the World History for the Classical Child Volume 2 The Middle Ages From the Fall of Rome to the Rise of the Renaissance Revised Edition
>> The Story of the World Volume 2
The books in this series are well written in a manner that is interesting to read They impress me as a great way to get an overview of the big picture of human history as preparation for more indepth study in the higher grades

Each volume covers a particular segment of history and is designed for one school year The historical period covered is pretty much parallel to the period covered in the home schooling program we are following but the book holds one s attention better than the one used in home schooling which has more of the text book format I understand that there is a companion question and answer book for each volume but I have not seen one of these books
>> Great books
We ve just begun this series of 4 books due to Classical Conversations homeschool curriculum I have enjoyed teaching history but my kids haven t quite caught the bug This series has given them something to look forward to Every day for homework they read a couple chapters and relate to me how much they like the stories never a complaint
>> A lot is missing
I m trying to work with The Story of the World Vol 2 The Middle Ages With respect how does one write a history of the Middle Ages and leave out

Cathedrals The medieval cathedrals of Europe there are over a hundred of them are the greatest accomplishments of humanity in the whole theatre of art P Johnson Art A New History New York HarperCollins 2003 p 153 they were the center of both secular and religious life in the Middle Ages

An explanation of how the monks in Ireland kept Western Civilization alive and re introduced it to the continent

The Rule of Benedict a foundational document for Western civilization right up there with the Magna Carta that has influenced everything from constitutional government to corporate organization

Scholasticism Humanism yes it began in the Middle Ages Thomas Aquinas and his Summa Theologica marrying Greek rationalism and Christian theology which has made Western Civilization the unique creation it is arguably the most successful and influential civilization the world has seen to date Aquinas developed among other things the concept of natural law and God given rights The line from Aquinas to Jefferson is profoundly important

Guilds the valuing of labor the attendant social mobility that came with guilds including the beginnings of a middle class

The founding of universities by the Church

The establishment of hospitals by the Church

The cessation of slavery in Western Europe because of Christianity

In sum the book does not report the pre eminent role and the great contributions of the Church in creating what we have come to know as Western Civilization Consider what Kenneth Clark writes

T hree or four times in history man has made a leap forward that would have been unthinkable under ordinary evolutionary conditions One such time was about the year 3000 BC when quite suddenly civilization appeared not only in Egypt and Mesopotamia but in the Indus valley another was in the late sixth century BC when there was not only the miracle of Ionia and Greece philosophy science art poetry all reaching a point that wasn t reached again for 2000 years but also in Indian spiritual enlightenment that has perhaps never been equaled Another was around the year 1100 It seems to have affected the whole world but its strongest and most dramatic effect was in Western Europe where it was most needed In every branch of life action philosophy organization technology there was an extraordinary outpouring of energy an intensification of existence These changes imply a new social and intellectual background They imply wealth stability technical skill and above all the confidence necessary to push through a long term project How had all this suddenly appeared in Western Europe Of course there are many answers but one is overwhelmingly more important than the others the triumph of the Church It could be argued that western civilization was basically the creation of the Church K Clark Civilisation New York 1969 pages 33 35

That story is missing from Bauer s account of the Middle Ages

Spark Notes The Killer Angels
>> Men of Honor
The main characters in this book come alive As I turned the pages it s as if I could feel the sun beating down on my back in those July days of 1863 I sensed the fear the soldiers must have had as they contemplated the charge that ended the battle I felt the fatique of Robert E Lee the humble courage of Joshua Chamberlain and the pain of Armistead as he lay there dying thinking of his old friend If you are wondering about what it felt like to be at Gettysburg read this book
>> A must read for every American
My highest recommendation This story needs to be known by all Americans and it is written in a captivating way Superb
>> Climatic battle of the Civil War
The Killer Angels portrays the principal players of the climatic battle of the Civil War Each of the participants has his own story to tell For the Confederate leaders the war became a struggle between love of country and love of state family and traditions The Union leaders were less dogmatic and most insisted the war was not about slavery The portrayal of Robert E Lee is riveting Michael Shaara has humanized and personalized the pivotal battle at Gettysburg

Word Smart 4th Edition Smart Guides
>> Simply Fantastic
I really thought that the authors of this book compiled a list of 1 505 formidable looking words which I would certainly never see again in my life I was very wrong

All yes all not almost all of these words appear in our daily lives even if it s rare to hear the words used casually As an AP English student in high school I noticed that the words in this book frequently appear in the writings of Mark Twain Emily Dickinson William Faulkner and Charles Dickens and even in contemporary writings such as those of J K Rowling These words commonly appear in major newspapers and magazines such as Sports Illustrated The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal and these words are bound to appear in any professional writing or documents The authors did their research when they compiled these precise 1 505 words Anyone who thoroughly reads this book will have a vocabulary to dazzle an interviewer impress an English teacher and of course show off to friends I believe that after going through these words you would very seldom find the need to refer to your dictionary to look up an unfamiliar word

While these words prove beneficial to our daily lives Word Smart is an ideal choice for those who are still attending high school or college If your mind is set on memorizing these words especially helpful for those preparing to take the SAT or other standardized tests I strongly recommend that you read Harry Lorayne s Page a Minute Memory Book which is actually recommended by the authors of this book in Chapter 1 using the book I memorized all of Word Smart in less than two weeks Not only will it help you memorize the 1 505 words in this book but it will also prove exceptionally helpful inside and outside of your academic career

I hope my review of this book was helpful You will not regret this purchase by the end you ll want to begin reading Word Smart II
>> great book to use to study for the SAT
This book has plenty of important words that show up frequently on the SAT The authors provide good definitions and examples to help you understand them But reading the book alone won t get you far its necessary to make flash cards and re memorize the words again and again
>> Great book
In high school they used Word Smart as part of the curriculum for SAT prep At the time we hated it but now as an adult I m glad that I saved the book in my parents closet because I dug it out to use once again as a reference The book is well organized well written and a fantastic resource As a writer I have started studying this book once again and will probably buy Volume II soon
