>> Good CPA review book
This is good/detailed CPA review book If you re able to set your own study schedule you can pass the exam using just this and the Wiley CD wait until the new one is out with multiple choice questions and simulations It s cheaper on amazon than on Wiley s site
>> Excellent much needed update
In the past Wiley CPA exam review books were huge They were about 50 larger than they are now The main complaint was that I just want to pass the exam not get a perfect on it They had way too much material covered in them

This time around it seems they took that advice to heart and the books are arranged in modules grouped so that it s easier to study Whew Finally they figured it out I m going to purchase the review software v15 when it comes out Practicing the exam especially the questions is probably the best way to prepare for the FAR

I ve tried the Bisk book last year but I just didn t feel it as good as Wiley s I sat for the FAR in January 2007 to see what it was like without preparing Didn t go well and now that things are slowing down I have the time to really focus on getting this done

Barron s SAT Subject Test Chemistry
>> Great Help
This book was so helpful to me when I was studying for the SAT chemistry subject test It is a very detailed book that covers every aspect that could be on the test Although I noticed that not everything that was in the book was on the actual test I felt like I had a very thorough understanding of the subject matter through doing practice questions and reading through the explanations The book also contains full practice tests which really helped me get acquainted with pacing and time for the real test Overall this book was a great success to me when I took the chemistry subject test
>> Good review for basics watch out at the end
I took the chem SAT after using this book and got a 740 which isn t bad This book has a great review of the simple things however the end of the book goes waaaaaay too far into detail The electrochem and nucleonics chapters are in so much detail that you could spend hours and hours studying every tiny thing when almost nothing show up on the test in those chapters After learning Ox Redox and Organic you should spend the vast majority of your time in the first 8 9 chapters Pay particular attention to the areas on solutions acids and bases and molarity/molality concentrations Just be careful where you spend your time with this book
>> Too much Information Need to rewrite the book
My son just took the SAT II chemistry He had been using this book for reviewing He found that this book provides too much unimportant information This could distract you from reviewing what is necessary In his opinion this book did not help much It also seems to me they have not updated the material in this book much I have a 2003 Barron s chemistry the easy way There is very little difference between the two books If you are taking AP chemistry already a simplier book to remind you some easy stuff may be more helpful In addition you should try to practic a real test so that you know how fast you need to work to finish all the questions in a pace that you feel comfortable I read some of the chapters in book some are very good I would hope Barron will rewrite this book to reflect the real test

The book was in great shape and it arrived earlier than I expected Well done
>> Best intro to statistics
I am a totally none statistics trained person however in my job I work with engineers and mathematicians that also teach statistics at the university undergraduate and graduate The Cartoon Guide to Statistics covered the entire spectrum of what my mathematicians talk about when they identify the statistics they are using for the projects I manage The book is on my work reference shelf as a ready reference as its explanations are very thorough I am planning on taking formal statistics courses to do more hands on working through the formulas to have a better understanding But going into the class thanks to this book I will have an understanding of the principle and intent of the different parts of statistics After reading the book I now know what my engineers mean with they say it all a roll of he dice if this doesn t make sense read the book its very well explained

An Outcast of the Islands
>> the second white mans grave in Sambir
I know the white man in many lands have I seen them always the slaves of their desires
This is Conrads second book and like his first it deals with the colonial enterprise but in this book white men are their own worst enemies The native Malay characters are given more in the way of identity in this book and they are seen as having complex views There is intrigue in this book as white men from different nations try to assert their dominance in the region but the Malays too have a plan and that is to take advantage of the whites aggressive and competitive natures and set them against each other Great plot But Conrad also gives you each characters story and each character is always more interesting than whatever role they are playing in the overall plot One of the most attractive and elaborated themes in this book is the one of mans place in nature and mans own nature The beauty of the tropical locale is made even more attractive and alluring by the women who walk through the foliage like apparitions veiled in sunlight and shadow Conrad describes the forests the light in the tree tops and the shadows on the forest floor and all nature is seen as metaphor for mans own dualities and incongruites A much matured writer from Almayers Folly The plot is simpler than Almayer was but thats good The simpler plot allows Conrad more latitude to deal with the individual characteristics and that is certainly one of Conrads strengths He sometimes overdoes it with the repeated use of words like inscrutable and the always heavy darkness and his overall view of man seems dim as man in his eyes is an only partially lit enlightened being To Conrad man remains a lost creature for the most part who just by chance or luck or ill omen gets caught up in events he cannot fully comprehend A limited resource man may be but while reading it is hard not to see it his way The summing up scene at the end of the book with a drunken Almayer who also appeared in Conrads first book the Almayer of Almayers Folly relating the now long passed events of the book to a traveling and equally drunk botanist is an excellent closing comment on the continued folly that is the colonial enterprise and man in general

>> Pocket Guide to APA Style
I would like to take this time to say this pocket guide is the best guide for APA that I have I seen It is easy to understand It has been very helpful
>> excellent
I had the great fortune of being taught by Dr Perrin 10 years ago at ISU I just wanted to let everyone know what an excellent teacher he was and how he instilled the same principles of the book into every one of his students There was no way you would pass his class without knowing how to do a bibliography in your sleep I have also used this style in every research paper that I ve done since Highly recommended
>> Great Book
I teach at both the Bachelor and Master level at a local private University and this is the book I use with my students It s compact not too pricey and logically explains the basic tenets of APA My students find it easy to use and I believe that it really helps their writing without being overwhelming Plus it s small and easily portable Great book

Getting Into the Physician Assistant School of Your Choice
>> A little over hyped
Overall good for the Pre PA who has done little to no research on the profession or admission into PA programs I bought this book along with others in order to prepare for PA school applications and interviews Though it is somewhat helpful in a general sense I felt that it wasn t as concise as it should have been with the author talking a lot about himself in many section intros It also has some out of date information and has a lot of information that is commonly found online IN the end it didn t give me any AH HAH moments
>> Very helpful
I found this book to be extremely helpful The book is comprehensively written to walk you through the steps of the application process starting at the very beginning with essays then interviews and even the what happens next if I am not accepted I purchased this book late in the game after I had sent my applications and found out that I was invited for interviews but the interview prep section was amazingly helpful and entirely worth the purchase This book has several pages of possible questions alongside appropriate answers with insights that allow you to formulate your own personalized and thoughtful answers I am glad I purchased this book because I was accepted to P A school and it may be due to its assistance with my interview preparation
>> Getting into the Physician Assistant School of your Choice Review
I love Amazon com and the shipping was excellent and prompt This book is also wonderful It gave me helpful tips for especially the interview for PA school It must have worked because I got into the school of my choice I would recommend this to anyone pursuing this career

>> Good book but my son found mistake
Book is great for testing strategy and quality of tests Just wanted to share one mistake that my son found in this book he is 12 so he couldn t write this review Math test 4 Section 8 Task 13 right answer is A they wrote 8x ky 19 in answer instead of 8x ky 19 as in task itself
>> This is THE BEST SAT Prep book
By using this book alone and this book alone our daughter raised her SAT score by 330 points from the first time she took the test AMAZING
>> Good but watch out for the practice exams
Great preparation amazing list of vocabulary fabulous verbal preparation I ve been tutoring for a while and just bought this book to add to the arsenal The practice exams are a tad difficult which could be a good and bad thing However I ve noticed that several not just a few math questions in the practice exams in the back of the book are incorrect in that either the answer choice does not appear in the choices or there are two correct choices for one question I m glad the book was able to educate my students enough so that they pointed out these errors though

>> Funny Wicked and great for learning the GRE
I found this book to be straight to the point down to earth simple information to help you ace the GRE I havent done the practise test but after finishing all the reviewing chapters I have the confidence I will be able to have a good score Its simple funny makes fun of the GRE people/creators and it gives you the necessary tips and tricks to pass the GRE I definetely recommend it
>> This book helped me raise my raw score from an 860 to a 1270
The best review I can give for this book is this

I signed up for the GRE a few weeks ago and had no idea where to start I was stressing out because of a deadline and was even more worried when I took the free demo test that Princeton Review offers on their website and only scored an 860 I need at least 1000 to get into the graduate school I want I should state that the 860 score was after doing a short math session on the Princeton website but no other studying took place before taking that practice test

After looking at the various study aides and options available to me I decided to go with The GRE Test for Dummies and ordered it for next day delivery 3 99 shipping with my Amazon Prime membership if you don t have it it s really handy FREE two day shipping and 3 99/item one day shipping I m just sayin When it showed up on my doorstep I cracked the cover and began reading at the beginning

Immediately I started feeling better about the upcoming test All of the advice and tips and tricks are laid out in an easy to follow format I ll be honest with my job I haven t really had a lot of time to study in the week since I got the book I managed to make it through the first half covering the sections on the verbal questions and most of the math review all of which was explained so well that I was able to pick it up after YEARS of not doing any sort of math whatsoever Most of the math I covered last night for the first time before going to bed

This morning I woke up and drove the hour and a half to my testing center for my test After I finally got checked in and through with the test training session you spend about half an hour going over how to take the test eg how to use the mouse how to enter your essays etc I took my pencil and scribbled the math formulas I was most worried about on my scratch paper I was about to begin in earnest

Four hours later I stared at the screen in joyous disbelief at my raw scores of 630 on the verbal and 640 on the math Frankly I cannot think of any better endorsement for this book aside from the convenience and the low cost than the increase of 410 points on my score

Note I do not have my official scores yet so this score does not include the essays
>> Should have gone with Kaplan or something else
Let me start out by saying that generally I am a good test taker I am also an Honors student with a 3 9 GPA I studied from this book and got a below average score on the GRE I do not attribute my score entirely to the book but I do think I could have done just as well or poorly rather on the exam without even cracking this book open There are a few tips for how to relax before the exam than I did apply but other than that I found the book pretty useless Now I have to shell out another 150 to take the exam again in order to have a shot at getting into graduate school My suggestion is that you don t buy this book Spend the little extra and get a book from Kaplan or Princeton Review I hear they re much better at preparing you

The book is just what it says practice questions with excellent suggested answers so that students can compare with their own pathetic attempts I m a teacher you may have guessed It is American so not totally for the UK system but I knew that when I bought it I find many US books better for my students because they give such good clear answers for the struggling exam sitter

The delivery was terrific well within the time I was told to expect and the book was in good condition well I expected that cos it was new
>> Good Review for AP Bio
This is a good resource for reviewing for the test loads of multiple choice questions and free response questions with answers explained
>> Very Beneficial
I could not believe that a whole book of practice exams existed It truly helped me get a 5 on the AP test Some of the tests were extremely hard but the others were basically the same level as the real test Studying Barron s AP review and this practice exam book will guarantee not just a passing score but a 4 or 5

The Best Business Schools Admissions Secrets A Former Harvard Business School Admissions Board Member Reveals the Insider Keys to Getting In
>> Read this book if applying to B School
Anyone even thinking about applying to business school should read this book Ms Isiadinso provides first hand knowledge of how application committees view applicants and great advice on putting together a cohesive application

Just as importantly the book helps you define who you are not just for your application but so that you have a clear picture and can learn to project that same picture to others After reading this book without question you ll be more prepared to start a business school application and more likely to get in after crafting a quality application based on the advice in this book but if you complete all of the recommended exercises you ll also be much closer to finding yourself
>> The one
I went to the book store and piled all of the business school books up high I have been through just about all of them and this was clearly the best one It takes a big picture approach to the admissions process and helps you understand that you are creating a brand for yourself Everything must fit within a cohesive story That idea is a simple one Figuring out what that story is who you are is not so simple Chioma does a wonderful job of helping you think through the story of yourself Highly recommended
>> Read two years before applying to MBA programs
This is a very sound book focused on the admissions to the top 8 MBA programs The only regret I have with this book is that I wish I had read it earlier

The author provides deep insights into how each applicant is evaluated MBA admissions in the top business schools is not all about GMAT and GPA

In order to be admitted to the top 5 business schools in particular one needs to show tremendous leadership and other WOW factors One needs to foster good relationships with potential MBA recommenders And don t forget the arduous preparation for GMAT

Unfortunately one can t just build a MBA WOW factor in few months It may take years to build extracurricular credentials and leadership experience that an MBA program would find compelling and credible it is too late to join the Peace Corp 3 months before the application

This would be an ideal book to read for those who just finished their undergraduate program and would like to attend an MBA program in a few years It will provide quite helpful tips on how to prepare for the grueling and challenging MBA admissions process in a top school DO NOT think high GMAT and GPA will guarantee you admission into a top MBA program although they will surely help

To summarize the book one needs to build a compelling personal brand and allow other parts of the application interview and recommendation confirm that brand DO NOT write boring and trite essays that will put admission officers to sleep Make your essays interesting and compelling with a touch of humor The book also outlines a list of things an MBA applicant should never do in the essays interviews and recommendations

Other suggestions from the book
1 Valid reasons why you would want an MBA money and intellectual challenge should not be emphasized
2 Choosing between Fulltime partime executive and accelerated MBA programs They are NOT the same
3 Writing proper and effective Essays Writing boring essays that do not foster strong personal brand is a sin
4 Choosing and prepping the recommenders
5 International student challenges visa obtaining financial aid language barrier etc
6 Financial Aid
7 How to handle interviews open houses and information sessions Note you WILL be evaluated in all 3 so be nice and professional to everyone

My main disappointment with the book is that the author provides deep insights into only top 8 MBA programs Clearly most of the suggestions are focused on the admissions to top 8 programs The school I am targetting which is a top 12 MBA program was not dealt in any level of depth

Microbiology the Easy Way Barron s E Z Series
>> AWESOME BOOK A must buy if you re taking Microbiology
I have to say that this book is a AMAZING I m using it as a supplement to my note from class and it is more understandable then my 1000 paged textbook Of course I skim through my textbook since this book doesn t have EVERYTHING but the essentials are summarized quite nicely I felt like I was actually learning something as I read it Although I have yet to take my first test for Micro I feel that whatever grade I get it is by God s grace of course with the help of this book that the grade will probably be higher rather than burdening myself with reading 7 chapters about microbes

A great supplement and a must buy I recommended it to my friend too
>> Easy to tackle this volume of material
An assignment for work has me hitting the books and I chose this highly recommended one The review of old knowledge and clear presentation of the new material I need for an upcoming project is just what I was looking for Not an outline by any means a lot of information to digest but in readable and interesting pieces The self tests keep me on track
>> THE Cliffs Notes on Microbiology
I was originally looking for a Barron s version of flash cards for Microbiology since I loved and was so successful with their version of Anatomy flash cards for my A P I and II classes this last summer But since there was no Barron s Microbiology Flash Card product and only this book I went for it and made the purchase This book is the down and dirty concise and extremely helpful every day person s guide to Micro Not full of fluff and not weak on details I found this book more helpful than the flash cards that WERE available in my school bookstore Microbiology by Bryan Edwards Publishing In the book there are helpful diagrams charts and self tests after every section to help me ensure that I am getting the info I set out to learn when I sit down with it No color pictures so if you re up late and need lots of brilliant ocular stimuli while reading put on your kids 3 D paper glasses and get back to reading This is helping me in my class Good luck to all of you

I grew up in Latin America and was not used to this type of test at all multiple choice type of questions and computer tests This book gave me a pretty good idea of what the test is really like I knew what to expect so my anxiety levels went down the moment I saw the TOEFL s first questions
The studying strategies were very helpful and particularly helped me with the reading section
In addition the sample tests in the CD were extremely useful I even got one question in the TOEFL that was in the Kaplan book
I studied for two weeks and got a score of 116 of 120 I really think the book helped me get a higher score
>> Great book for study
This book will guide you step by step through the different types of questions and situation you will encounter in the TOEFL in addition the book bring 4 full practices exactly like the iBT which for me is the beast feature for study and learning If you are looking for skills to improve your score and tips on how to do it this is the book If you already know the skill and you want to practice then you should also consider an additional book
>> What a resemblance of the real exam
The 4th edition is working on my VISTA no problem with the program The CD practice test is similar of the real test specifically the duration in speaking and reading I like this

Kaplan GRE Exam Advanced Verbal Your Only Guide to an 800 Perfect Score Series
>> good review
I just started studying and this is great I usually remember like 30 words a night I recommend this product
>> Helpful
The book was very helpful in spelling out strategies for the verbal GRE The vocabulary lists in the back of the book were super as well I wished there were more sample questions and problems though
>> Provided peace of mind in days before taking test
The Kaplan 800 verbal book is far better than the math version of the same series and has some great tips on what to do if you don t know the vocabulary word given They tell you how for the antonym questions to narrow down the answer choices so that you can possibly choose the correct answer without even reading the given vocabulary word I don t know that I used any of the tips they gave but reading these and knowing that I could possibly answer questions even if I didn t know the vocabulary word did calm me down in the days before I took the test and I scored in the 95th percentile for verbal

In general I would recommend studying Barron s test prep material if you are starting well ahead of time actually their essay writing advice is very useful even if you don t have much time to study this book from Kaplan if you have just a few weeks or so and to study Princeton Review if it s the week of

One Day in the Life SparkNotes Literature Guide
>> One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
This is a world renown story of a regular man s regular day only in the setting of a Russian Gulag in frozen Siberia Denisovich wakes up works talks with his fellow prisoners eats a little and goes to bed What makes the book such is a success is the way it subtly gets under your skin making you empathize with him while acknowledging the futility of feeling in such a remote and barren world Life is tough cold and monotonous which is exactly how you feel while reading it However its detachment is one of its strengths as it keeps emotion at bay and focus attuned to denser themes of futility and the effects of totalitarianism and brutality on the normal psyche It is written in a simple style and is always detached from its characters in a way that makes their little moments of sympathy all the more impactful Short lean and fascinating this is necessary reading for anyone
>> Mint condition
My wife requested this book It arrived as expected While it had been a library book it had never seemingly been opened Mint condition Thank you
>> One day in a Bigger Tragedy
As its title suggests One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich covers a twenty four hour period within one of the prisons of the Soviet Gulag Archipelago Alexander Solzhenitsyn writes of Ivan Denisovich Shukhov and his struggles within a day from sunrise to lights out

By most respects this is harrowing story of man s inhumanity to man A mass of humanity struggles in the Siberian winter to perform thankless construction tasks with no heed for the needs of the individual Warders are relentless The individual is ground down even to the point where death seems to be a release

Yet for all the obvious truth that sits within this short novel I feel that time has diminished its impact In the 21st century we are very well aware of the horrors of the Soviet state and there are few people who regret its passing When the book was first published in 1959 I suspect that it would have had more impact At that time the world was just beginning to understand the inherent corruption and evil of the Soviet state Today we are more aware Indeed we have seen other horrors that would match it or even exceed it Here I am thinking of the Chinese Cultural revolution the killing fields of Cambodia and the genocide in Rwanda I could of course name many more examples Such is modern history

However even though the great waves of history have moved on there remains something haunting about One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich Just because other evils have occurred does not mean that the evils of the Gulag Archipelago can be swept aside Alexander Solzhenitsyn is a masterful story teller The tragedy is that this story was simply so real

>> very easy to understand
the book is being used for my human anatomy class and its pretty helpful with the simple to understand images and text good for learning complex stuff in a simple manner recommend for highschool early college students
>> Good for Basic Course
This is an excellent source for a basic understanding of Anatomy and Physiology Just note that any such class requires a lot of memorization There are a lot of terms and names for things to remember This book makes it more interesting my adding stories and relating the information to real life or job situations It helps to put things into perspective The images are not always clear but when used with the workbook designed for the course everything comes clear

I was not particularly pleased with the CD s that came with the book but they do contain all the images from the book as an aid to studying
>> Very Disappointed
Well I had given them the wrong address I gave them the address to my old place However when I went to my old place no one lives in that apartment yet nothing was there I went to the office and nothing was there I had aim books inquire Ups and all they could tell me was that the product was delivered at the location It was not No one lives there so how can it be that someone signed for it when no one lives in that apartment as far as I m concerned I will never use aim books again and I will avoid ups like the plague

Cracking the GMAT with DVD 2008 Edition Graduate School Test Preparation
>> Good Intro to the GMAT but inadequate for people seeking higher GMAT scores
I self studied and scored a 770 on the GMAT Here are my thoughts on Princeton Review s Cracking the GMAT book

OVERVIEW

The Princeton Review Cracking the GMAT book is like the Kaplan GMAT 2010 Premier Live Online book a general GMAT strategy guide However apart from the natural similarities such as separate chapters for the 5 types of problems you will see on the GMAT plus an essay section the two books follow markedly different paths to knowledge

As advertised from the beginning The Princeton Review Cracking the GMAT is not a guide that emphasizes building subject matter skills in the quantitative or verbal fields but rather focuses on what the authors call cracking the system tips and tricks to help you score higher with an obvious preference for process of elimination POE and picking numbers Personally I do not fully support such strategies for the GMAT I consider them more as backup plans Here s why POE cannot and will never replace actually knowing the answer to a question it will just improve your chances of getting it right Picking numbers is also quite risky I sometimes see this strategy discussed in online forums people try to pick numbers but particularly at an advanced level they pick the wrong set of numbers and everything falls apart

The book is a pleasant read though and I personally found the small info boxes on the sides of pages to be quite entertaining and interesting The authors use the average test taker for examples of do s and don ts However I didn t like the authors tone for describing the GMAT I felt an overall negative vibe about the test which was not the case when I read The PowerScore GMAT Critical Reasoning Bible for instance An example would come from the Reading Comprehension chapter No one in her right mind would ever read one of these passages of her own free will They are almost always boring I strongly disagree with this view since I personally enjoyed most texts particularly those dealing with the social sciences My advice is to think of the GMAT as a sort of mind game you have to beat an interesting little challenge I assure you that feeling positive about the GMAT will make the experience a lot less painful

PROS

A good introduction to the GMAT an easy read to make you understand what the test is about how it s scored and what to expect on test day

If your quantitative skills are not fresh definitely give this book a chance It covers math basics pretty well Again the fact that it s an easy read will probably help you reconnect with junior high and high school math

Questions are structured in bins according to difficulty which means you can focus on your particular level when you practice

The book comes with a registration code you can use to gain online access to four CATs computer adaptive practice tests However I felt that these practice tests were a bit easier than the actual GMAT

CONS

If you re shooting for a higher score above 600 this book won t help much You will need other resources to help you reach your goal

At just over 280 questions this book has fewer and easier practice questions as compared to other guides like Kaplan GMAT 2010 Premier Live Online Also the explanations could use some more work particularly in verbal I personally get really upset if the best explanation for why an answer is wrong is because it s out of scope This will definitely not help a test taker understand where her error in reasoning was

The focus on strategies such as POE and number picking means that you ll have some potentially useful tools for G day but such strategies might backfire Cracking the GMAT does not provide an in depth analysis of question types and their respective approaches

BOTTOM LINE

After going through The Princeton Review s Cracking the GMAT all I can truly say is this the book is good but only for a certain level that is up to mid 600s As a basic guide it shines as a tool for getting into that top 10 MBA I do not think it delivers If you do not already know your starting level I advise you to do the following go to download the free GMATPrep software and take practice test 1 save 2 for the last days of your prep If you score significantly below 600 consider investing in this book If you score higher than 600 you d best search for a different resource since you ll need a more rigorous program to get to a higher percentile score

>> interesting premise for a story makes for a so so read
this book is about a young mentally handicapped man charlie gordon who opts to have an experimental surgery to make him smart algernon is the mouse that shows successful results and with high expectations charlie develops quickly into a genius written from a journal perspective we can see the mental and emotional changes that charlie undergoes a touching story with a clean and simple writing style

i mostly liked the story line and character development although the midpoint of the book made me feel like the author was reaching beyond his own intellectual means and it sounded forced at times

definitely worth reading but it didn t blow me away
>> Under 70 IQ d man follows in the pawsteps of an intelligence enhanced maze running mouse
Charlie is a 32 year old man with an IQ of 68 who participates in a procedure involving an experimental surgery designed to increase his intelligence threefold following in the pawsteps of Algernon a mouse who s successfully survived something similar Before and after undergoing the procedure Charlie is tasked by the researchers with journaling his thoughts feelings and actions Although one might expect the man s life experiences to improve significantly post surgery the transformation yields unexpected results as Charlie finally fully comprehends remembered incidents of his past in a new insightful light When his IQ exceeds that of the researchers that he s held in high esteem things become even more complicated Flowers for Algernon is a thought provoking story about several subjects including society s stereotypes about humans whose intelligence falls at the fringes On similar subjects A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nassar Born on a Blue Day by Daniel Tammet and Stuck in Neutral by Terry Trueman
>> Flowers for Algernon
Flowers for Algernon is an interesting science fiction novel that deals with the ethical issues of experimentation on humans and the treatment of the mentally handicapped Charlie Gordon is chosen to have a surgery to increase his intelligence Written in Charlie s perspective the novel changes as his intelligence changes It is a very interesting read that addresses the many aspects of human nature and the desire for knowledge and friendship I definitely recommend it

>> MUST HAVE
If you are as overwhelmed by the lack of research based assessments for benchmarks and progress monitoring tools THIS is the holy grail of research based assessement tools
Rather than reinventing the wheel when it comes to assessments this is the quite possibly the most simple to implement easy to understand and efficient examples of how to implement research based assessments
Perfect for anyone in the preservice or practicing field of education The range of grade levels is from primary to high school and are easily adaptable for students who need accomodations or modifications as well What more could you ask for
I will be implementing these assessments in my classroom as well as during the tutoring clinic I am participating in for struggling readers Enables teachers who are unfamiliar with how to gauge student responses in comprehension to help narrow down where the student is having difficulty then provides ample examples to help the students that are struggling improve

>> ehh
I chose to order these flashcards because there were more than the Barron s one I would recommend ordering the Barron s because the Kaplan cards were very very small and flimsy While the content they contain is good I think the Barrons would be better overall especially if you plan to use them frequently In addition they are not numbered and there is no convenient way to order them
>> AP HISTORY CARDS
These cards were great They were durable and contained great study material My son scored a 4 good enough for 6 college credits I would recommend sharing the cost with someone else as they are spendy and once you take the test they have little value

I hate these cards I bought them along with the Princeton Review book and I m glad I didn t buy just them They are too small to be helpful They are simply a terrible product and the only reason it s getting a 2 is because the actual info is thorough and accurate Perhaps too thorough after all who wants a paragraph explanation on a flashcard Neeedless to say I m not using this product to study for the APUSH test

Spark Notes Cry The Beloved Country
>> A Heartbreaking Must Read Story
This book gives us an inside look at South African apartheid in the 1940 s We live this story through the eyes of a poor Zulu pastor who decides to travel from his small village to Johannesburg in hopes to save his son from mounting troubles The migration of gold mine workers to the cities has increased the crime rate due to the separation of families Exploitation of these laborers has caused a political unrest in Johannesburg

Stephen Kumalo our Zulu pastor has to question his own parenting and lifestyle when he sees the poor decision making of his own son Stephen meets a varied barrage of people some who help and some who choose silence as the easiest way to stay out of trouble when searching for his son

Cry the Beloved Country is a must read book The story gave me insight on this foreign culture and the hardships experienced by not only the exploited workers of the South African gold mines but the destroyed families of said workers This book is mandatory criterion for schools in South Africa and it is worthy of this praise
>> Beautiful soft and descriptive writing but chilling and thought provoking story
I have heard about this 1948 novel all my life and was aware of its theme This is the first time I ve read it though and I must say the impact was indeed startling The writing is beautiful soft and descriptive And yet it deals with the horrors and inconsistencies that existed in South Africa at that time The book is nothing short of a plea for justice and at the same time tries to be fair to both the white and black citizens of this troubled land

The story is that of an aging Zulu pastor who travels to the city of Johannesburg to look for his sister and his son Life there is difficult for black people who are forced to live in shantytowns and who labor for low wages in the gold mines What the pastor discovers is horrible His sister has had to sell her body to men and his son has accidentally murdered a white man who was working towards bringing a sense of fairness to the country

Easily I got caught up in this very poignant story There is a sense of poetry in the words I felt I was hearing the voice of South Africa and it truly gave me the chills And what was indeed the most chilling of all is that this book was written before Apartheid came and tore the country apart

The author was born in South Africa the son a third generation English mother and a Scot Presbyterian father At one time he worked as a teacher and later the principal of a reformatory for young African offenders and these experiences certainly did influence whole sections of the book Mostly though the book just picked me up and placed me right in the middle of a country that has not yet been able to deal satisfactorily with its problems

>> A Timeless Classic
I picked this book up from my bookcase where apparently I had bought it sometime ago when it was recommended to me by someone I was in between books and thought for Christmas I needed a classic to read and this book is way better than I ever expected It is a classic for the ages and the language is absolutely beautiful heart wrenching and lyrical What makes this book even more beautiful is that I can relate to it even today though I know little of South Africa and its history Unfortunately I see a lot of similarities between South Africa and our own history

The back of the book simply states that this book is about a man and his son in the depths of South Africa Do not be misled by that simplest of blurbs This book is about a lot more than a complicated father son relationship It is about the deep love the natives have for their country the deep divide between the minority the whites that have come to power and the natives and the unsettling of the tribes now that the land can no longer provide for them It is a complicated book about a lot of issues that comes to head when the minister s son killed a white man It gets even more interesting when the white man s father Jarvis finds in his heart the ability to listen to what his son was trying to do all those years It turned out that Jarvis son was a social worker in the highest sense of the word He was trying to reconcile the divide between the natives and the uprooting of their tribal customs and trying to bring about the differences The minister Stephen Kumalo went to Johannesburg to look for his son but only was he too late to save his son

Paton touched upon so much in this tiny book and handles all the difficult subjects well One could feel the anguish of Kumalo when he finds his son and hears his sentence of death One could feel the pain of a man who is called to attend to his son because his son was murdered and that he knew his son s murderer s father Interwoven throughout the men s pain and grief are stories of a land that is now rendered apart by two different races

One cannot just pick this book up and read it without being affected This book is one of those that will haunt you long after the last page has been turned It is a book about love hatred indifference and greed but also of hope and promises It is rich in details and it is one of my absolute favorite books to recommend for others to read It really is a must read for all serious readers because it will touch upon your heart

>> Lots of errors very frustrating
I too noticed a lot of errors not just typos but HUGE errors This is frustrating because I know the right answers but the program CD marks them wrong One error noted is the explanation for Question 43 for Exam 1

Question
In the problem which operation should be performed according to the order of operations A Exponent B Multiply C Subtract D Add

Answer
B Multiply

Explanation
Using the acronym PEMDAS as a mnemonic device to remember the order of operations it allows us to see the that the first operation required in the problem is multiplication That is the acronym calls for the following order percentages EXPONENTS multiplication division addition and subtraction

BTW the P in PEMDAS stands for parentheses not percentage
>> Not Enough
I used this book as well as Preparing to Teach Texas Content Areas EC 4 and the practice exam on the ETS website The practice tests in this manual focus on content whereas the practice test on the ETS site focuses on application and the real exam is somewhere in between Unfortunately a lot of the content questions on the actual test didn t ask about content that was covered in the book and the test s questions especially about Math Social Studies and Science were so out there that I don t know that there s a way I could have better prepared myself for the exam I was expecting the manual to be similar to manuals on the GRE or SAT written by instructors who have studied the test and know what kind of things come up Instead this manual as well as the EC 4 manuals is more like a shot in the dark However the English portion is very useful and all of the information about teaching theories and child development are a must And I doubt I would have passed the test without having read a manual on it and this one is fine compared to others I would recommend the Preparing to Teach Texas book over this one as it s questions are more similar to those on the test and it teaches you more application along with giving you sample lesson plans

I did pass the test with a 268 which is not great but I ll take it 240 is the lowest passing score and 300 is the highest score possible I also entered the test having taken no education courses and graduating with a Liberal Arts degree less than a year ago
>> Great book
Used this book to study for the EC 6 Generalist and I passed the first time Includes a diagnostic test to help you figure out which competencies you should study more

A Study Guide to Edith Wharton s The House of Mirth A Audio
>> Very Moving
I cannot comment on this particular edition but felt compelled to review the novel anyway in the hope that others will read it

I didn t think I would feel sympathy for Lily but I don t think I ve ever wanted to help a character in any novel as much as I wanted to save Lily I didn t exactly fall in love with her frankly she is not my cup of tea But I desperately wanted to see her happy

For days I was affected by the end I was very very moved

That said I do not accept Edith Wharton s sense of determinism nor do I accept the basic plot with its scarcity of men Lily is the most beautiful woman in New York and there are only two or three obnoxious men she can choose from I found that hard to swallow I also found it difficult to accept that even for an unaccomplished woman it was either a life of frivolity with the rich set or a life of impoverished loneliness Even in 1905 there were more alternatives Lily for example could have learned her lesson that the rich were leading shallow lives and still have found happiness on a lower social scale with a hard working doctor or a military officer etc She also could have left New York and struck out West

I love the writing of Edith Wharton And I ve read most of her works But I don t buy the determinism and I think it was a little strained in this novel

But Lily is unforgettable
>> Protagonist Blame Thyself
High American society New York turn of the 19th century Lily Bart an associate of the well heeled who often attends their social functions has no fortune of her own What to do Marry into money This should be easy enough for Lily as she s found to be beautiful by many of the men who orbit about her but she seems to have no interest in them She longs for the trappings of aristocratic life but is unwilling to accept the sacrifices attendant to marrying simply for position Letting one too many opportunities slip by and being embroiled in a couple of social faux pases along the way she eventually finds that she s been dumped by polite society facing penury in a boarding house

House of Mirth is of course beautifully written though the plot moves quite slowly with few truly dramatic punctuations Lily is a largely unsympathetic character whose motives are not easy to understand and whose actions are often frustrating Indeed many of the misfortunes that befall her seem to be of her own making

>> Great Book
I received the book on time and it was exactly what I ordered It is a good novel to read and I highly recommend it

>> The Modern Library hardcover is the one you want details of the work and edition
First a little about the Modern Library edition

Astute scholars have toiled quite diligently here to preserve the fifteen stories which make up this work in the precise way that James Joyce himself wanted them presented To save time it s best to just note that Joyce encountered discord in getting this work published because various influential factions found it to be blasphemous This outdated assessment represents the Irish Catholic View of the age which had somehow carried over from the Victorian Period Today one might characterize these tales as very slightly irreverent if that In the end this work of top British Irish literature eventually saw publication in 1914

Joyce embraced certain caveats which he wanted included via the publishing process he used dashes to set out dialogue instead of quotation marks as he considered the latter to manifest unnecessary baggage Honestly I fell right in to his technique which is how it s presented here and discovered that this practice makes for very palatable reading He also wanted many corrections made to the original text and as many as possible were included in this 1993 edition

As to the stories I savor Joyce to the highest degree because I can relate to his paradigm my own writing is quite like his I am James Joyce just as Dan Quayle was JFK Anyway here we have fifteen fictional accounts over the course of 286 pages the product description is incorrect The writing is very straight forward with the occasional subtle nuance which escalates this compendium into the realm which we now classify as literature At times James is as morbidly dreary as Dostoyevsky in Crime and Punishment Wordsworth Classics and at others he panders a level of acerbity which William Faulkner conveyed in As I Lay Dying Norton Critical Edition These are all culturally folksy tales of Dublin salt of the earth residents

Each story chiefly focuses upon members of a repressed society the urban working Irish at the outset of the 20th Century These people were subjugated by archaic laws dissolute politicians greedy employers by one another but most of all by the hop and grain Alcohol was as vast a problem for the Irish as it has historically been for both Russians and Native American Indians The ultimate consequence for all three cultures has been essentially equivalent

The Irish poor somehow managed to live a slightly more civilized existence than the aforementioned groups but they were still enslaved to their overwhelming social burdens Joyce brought these actualities to life He lifted the mundane indeed the melancholy to the plateau of the melodramatic without being in the least exploitive of their collective plight His writing style especially his vague story conclusions best lend themselves to suit the analytic ponderer

If you would like to begin your reading of Joyce in chewable bites rather than tearing into Ulysses Penguin Modern Classics or Finnegans Wake Penguin Modern Classics then this book is precisely what you re seeking

Highly recommended

>> Dubliners Penguin Classics Edition Intro by Terence Brown
Since Amazon seems to have lumped reviews of sundry editions under one category I have specified the exact edition on which I am commenting instead of a proper title for my review

It would be presumptuous of me to comment upon Joyce s prose which in Dubliners in my reader s opinion seems flawless I can only tell you the reasons why I adore this book Joyce views his residents of Dublin of various ages and social classes through a melancholy lens albeit tinged with grace and humor Of all the stories my favorite is Araby which recaptures the expectations frustrations and delusions of adolescence The stories seem intended to be read in order from beginning to end Indeed each story is linked to the next by recurrent vocabulary and imagery for instance conceptual images of light and dark vision blindness paralysis and death among others to be understood both literally and figuratively All these images have been interwoven so carefully that unless one is looking for them they will be noticed only subliminally they nevertheless contribute to the feeling of satisfaction after Joyce brings them together in his final heartbreaking paragraph which will linger in one s thoughts long after one has closed the book

I especially appreciate the editor s notes in this edition which clarify a range of topics including Dublin topography vocabulary and slang that has gone out of usage obsolete social and political matters This Penguin Edition is therefore excellent for students as well as for the serious reader
