this book is about a young mentally handicapped man charlie gordon who opts to have an experimental surgery to make him smart algernon is the mouse that shows successful results and with high expectations charlie develops quickly into a genius written from a journal perspective we can see the mental and emotional changes that charlie undergoes a touching story with a clean and simple writing style
i mostly liked the story line and character development although the midpoint of the book made me feel like the author was reaching beyond his own intellectual means and it sounded forced at times
definitely worth reading but it didn t blow me away

Charlie is a 32 year old man with an IQ of 68 who participates in a procedure involving an experimental surgery designed to increase his intelligence threefold following in the pawsteps of Algernon a mouse who s successfully survived something similar Before and after undergoing the procedure Charlie is tasked by the researchers with journaling his thoughts feelings and actions Although one might expect the man s life experiences to improve significantly post surgery the transformation yields unexpected results as Charlie finally fully comprehends remembered incidents of his past in a new insightful light When his IQ exceeds that of the researchers that he s held in high esteem things become even more complicated Flowers for Algernon is a thought provoking story about several subjects including society s stereotypes about humans whose intelligence falls at the fringes On similar subjects A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nassar Born on a Blue Day by Daniel Tammet and Stuck in Neutral by Terry Trueman

Flowers for Algernon is an interesting science fiction novel that deals with the ethical issues of experimentation on humans and the treatment of the mentally handicapped Charlie Gordon is chosen to have a surgery to increase his intelligence Written in Charlie s perspective the novel changes as his intelligence changes It is a very interesting read that addresses the many aspects of human nature and the desire for knowledge and friendship I definitely recommend it
